Cornell NROTC and Human Ec Major Changes

Hey guys,
I recently got the NROTC scholarship for Cornell; however, I orignally put Chemical Engineering as my intended major so they gave me the scholarship assuming I had a tier 1 major. I was accepted the Human Ecology with a major in nutritional sciences. Nutritional sciences is tier 3 and if I tell them, I lose the scholarship. HumEc does have Biology and Society which is tier 2 and I could switch to that. I guess the question is, if i was accepted into nutritional sciences, can I switch to Biology and Society? Also, just a financial aid question, if I get a lot of financial aid, can I put that towards my room and board(NROTC doesn’t pay for that). Sorry this took so long but I appreciate your responses.

Yes, you can change major.

As for financial aid, the aid covers tuition first, then room/board. So if your NROTC already covers tuition, the aid should cover your room/board.

thanks for the reply i appreciate it! i’ve beens stressing out about this a lot lately. how exactly do i got about changing my major?

Read about it here:

ok thank you so much i appreciate it!

About the financial aid… I recently emailed the financial aid office about the NROTC scholarship. I received a large grant from Cornell (around $40,000) along with loan estimates ($3000), two federal grants (around $4,000), and federal work study ($2000). My expected family contribution (the amount my family, including myself, is expected to pay) was around $6000. They said that since NROTC is considered an “outside scholarship”, only my loans and my work study will be paid off, and I will still have to pay the expected family contribution. The rest of the scholarship would be used to reduce the amount of grant money given. So, essentially, it’s a $5,000 scholarship (for me anyways), but it still provides a monthly stipend and the opportunity to become a Naval (or Marine Corps) Officer, along with other fun things to do while in college. I hope I was able to offer some insight.

P.S. As you might have implied, I have also received the NROTC scholarship and will attend Cornell. I look forward to meeting you at orientation bro haha

yeah i haven’t gotten my financial aid yet cuz i turned in forms late, but i’ll probably be in the same situation as you (the scholarship actually not being worth that much). but i thought about it a lot and i feel like its such a good opportunity and will be good structure for me. look forward to meeting you too and feel free to add me on facebook!

I would think you are more likely to have an issue with the NROTC folks than the Cornell folks about switching majors. I would suggest contacting the NROTC folks at Cornell ASAP about the major with which you were accepted to Cornell and what you;re thinking about switching to … if there are any issues it’s too your advantage to know now instead of early September.

i emailed the women in charge of all placement issues and she said switching from a tier 1 to tier 2 is completely fine. but that’s a good point, I am going to call humec and cornell nrotc tomorrow just to sort out everything. and then hopefully i can officially put down my deposit!
