cornell sup essays

hey guys, ive already sent in my application, but i was wondering if you could tell me what you think of my cornell essays.

Describe your intellectual interests, their evolution, and what makes them exciting to you.

It is through the introduction of the International Baccalaureate (IB) program that I started to grow intellectually. More specifically, it has been the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course that has broadened my intellectual horizons.

Having to read demanding material in many styles has allowed me to form a clear idea of my own intellectual interests. My reading of an extract from William James’s Principles of Psychology prompted the realization of my pluralist beliefs. I find that this realization was the most significant result of my reading of the extract. It is thus clear to me that my intellectual interests mostly deal with my outlook on the workings of the world.

My interest with the notion of pluralism is considerable, to the extent that my intellectual beliefs seem to revolve around it. When I first encountered the concept of pluralism, I was gripped by the possible existence of many worlds – worlds that do not necessarily have to have anything in common. Could it be true? Like with all new ideas, my mind went to default mode – denial. James was mad! However, as time went on, the limits associated with denial began to fade.

My perception has been altered – I now believe that reality consists of elements that do not include each other – rather, they are with each other. As William James stated in his 1907 lectures, the world is “more like a federal republic than like an empire or a kingdom.” It is a belief that has governed all other beliefs.

Consider the academic programs in the school/college you indicated above. How will you utilize them to further explore your intended major or field of interest, or general academic interests if you’re undecided?

I am aware of the excellent opportunities that College of Arts and Sciences offers, and I intend to seize them. Guided by my aspirations to succeed in the corporate world, I am sure that my utilization of the various academic programs will be effective.

Being an aspiring Computer Science major, I realize that the area of computers and technology is growing so fast that constant education is necessary – not only from professors, but from experts in the field. Therefore, I intend to actively participate in the regular seminar program the College offers. Central to any future success is whether or not one is able to keep pace with current developments, and seminars are a great way for me to do this.

Another way for me to do this is to efficiently exploit the research resources the College provides. Cornell University is famous for its research opportunities, and I would be foolish not to make use of them. I therefore plan to conduct regular research, particularly in the field of Networks. I believe that this tool will allow me intensify my education in a particular area, which will ultimately be beneficial in terms of career placement.

So, if I am admitted into Cornell University, I do not intend to passively sit back and see where life takes me – far from it. Through my utilization of various academic programs, I will not only make sure that I am on the corporate ladder, but that I am at the very top.

Personally, I found them stilted and dull. You did answer the questions, but the essays simply aren’t interesting.

The second one also had a few split infinitives, though considering the question itself had one, I don’t think they’re allowed to look down on that…

i felt the same. but dont sweat man, i think every1 wrote crappy essays for cornell. they left VERY little room for creativity. if ur common app is good, u should be ok. good luck

The second essay is nice, but the first one lacks luster. but as eibrahim said, they leave little room for creativity.
a quick tip–one thing you could try to do is make it more active. maybe you could pick out one moment where you really realized how your “interest with the notion of pluralism is considerable.” Make it sound like the adcom is there with you, witnessing this ground-breaking idea.

uhm…i hoped that helps… good luck!

hehe thanks for reassuring me guys…
my common app essay was definitely better than these ones, the cornell essay questions made it really hard to be original (especially no.2). i guess now all i have to hope for is that the adcom is a group of old, boring people who enjoy reading this kind of stuff (in other words hoping for a miracle).

anyone else?
