Cornell is my top choice (though I’m not applying ED for financial reasons). My standardized testing scores are definitely the weakest component of my application. I have a 2170 on the SAT (640 CR+710 Math+790 Writing) and a 31 on the ACT (hoping for a 33-34 on my October test). I know that Cornell doesn’t look at the writing section, which i extremely discouraging considering it’s my highest score. The rest of my application is considerably strong-I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA in an extremely rigorous course load (top 5% of my class), officer of 3 clubs, started my own “charity” organization in my community (I use the term charity loosely as it is not registered with the state) and am extremely involved in extracurriculars and volunteer work. Will my low standardized testing scores have an extreme effect on my admission to the university, or will my application balance them out?

Also, I’m applying to the College of Arts and Sciences and my alternate option is the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, if this helps. Thank you.

A 31 on the ACT is within the middle 50% range for Cornell. However, you left out your SAT IIs, which are required for Cornell admission. Even if you don’t get the 33 you’re looking for, you still have as good a chance as any other applicant. All standardized tests do is show who is capable of doing what work in which colleges. Someone with a 31 can handle ivies just fine.

Since you’re applying to CALS, I recommend taking your Biology and Chemistry SAT IIs ASAP if you haven’t already.

Cornell doesn’t “look” at the writing section, but since they do look at your R, M, M+R and full score, your writing section does not matter any less. A 1600R+M is useless if you get a 1900 overall (extreme, but you get the idea). Good luck!

<—also one of 40K applying to cornell this year.

Yea Im applying to cornell too. I think that your application is great! It is impressive that you do charitable events. It’s a shame that I have like a 4.6 GPA but do not do much else other than cross country and MAO (a math honor society). I would say write really good essays though!
