Cornell Vs Duke (Econ&ArtHistory major)

I’m planning to double major in Economics and Art History-
But I don’t know which school I should apply for ED.

I heard that Duke’s Econ is really good and Cornell’s is also quite good
but I never heard that Duke’s art programs are good.
(I’ve searched for all the art history rankings but Duke wasn’t even included in the rankings…)

Cornell has the Architecture and Art college or sth so I’m expecting
their art history program to be okay
(also some person in CC said that all ivies except for Dartmouth offers fine art history courses)

Do u think I should choose Cornell over Duke?
Frankly, I don’t like the fact that Cornell is such a big school and that it is located in a very rural place but to think about my majors… Cornell might be better.

I’m so confused! Help

Also, I don’t think that North Carolina (where Duke is) will provide me good internship experience… but I really like Duke’s atmosphere!

Duke does have art history. I think Duke should be your way to go. You shouldn’t apply to any school ED unless its your clear first choice, and obviously Cornell isn’t. Don’t use ED as your way of getting into a good school

Are you looking at any of the liberal art colleges, because
Williams has AMAZING ART HISTORY & ECON.
Amherst does to, and I think Amherst’s curriculum would allow you to pursue both majors easily

a considerable number of duke students land internships in banking and finance companies up north. of course, these positions are very competitive, but they are competitive regardless of undergraduate institution. it’s location in n. carolina does not hinder recruitment. in fact, outside of the state, nyc has the highest concentration of duke alumni in the united states.

mbk, I’m the one who said all the ivies have decent art history programs. I’m not familiar with Duke’s department, but my guess is that it would big enough to offer a good range of courses.

What kind of internship are you looking for, something related to art history, e.g. at a museum or something related to economics, e.g. on Wall Street? I’d suggest you spend some time on the colleges’ career counseling website. Ask the advisors what kind of positions they’ve filled.

I’d second the recommendation of Williams for both art history *and *economics. Double majoring is quite common. Internships – either in arts related fields or in finance are also readily come by.

The truth is, I’m not into LACs so I’m planning not to apply to any of the LAC ,even for RD.
I’ve heard about how great Williams’ art history is, but I just don’t think LAC is my type.

I know Duke has a strong alumni connection in NYC but isn’t that only for Biz people?

Also, I hope to work in the art field, as a marketing or biz related person.
I am really interested in art management/business
(I love the arts and I love studying econ/biz! perfect match for me if I end up in the field)
and after few years of work experience, I want to study in NYU or Columbia to study Art Management for my graduate degree.

(But I’ve heard that it’s really selective… esp for NYU, accepts only 20-30 ppl who has art related BA degree. Also, the average age of ppl in the class is 30 yrs old.)
I’m not sure if Duke will provide me the right internship and work experience before I go on to graduate school.
(I’m talking about the arts… I know their econ connection is spectacular)

I think LACs very. Just because its an LAC doesn’t make it the stereotype, especially with a school like Williams. I think you know what you want, and your probably giving up on a school, or not even looking into a school that would be the best choice for your needs.

mbk, I’m not trying to talk you into Williams or any small LAC. If you want big, then you want big. The reason that Williams’ name keeps coming up in connection with art history is that a disproportionate number of current and recent directors and curators at U.S. museums came out of the Williams system.

Duke has high name recognition and a lot of resources. My guess is that many art history graduates have achieved success in the field. I’d suggest that you write to the department and ask them your questions.

Arts management is a compelling career for someone who wants to be in the arts but finds curating too limiting. It’s interesting to me that many of the directors of the country’s top museums have not come up through the traditional art history PhD channel. (Though many have.) You might look at the career of Thomas Krens who recently stepped down at the Guggenheim.

You may want to rethink committing to early decision unless certain of your choice.

Other schools you may want to consider with both top-notch economics and art history departments include Northwestern, Columbia and Yale.

Williams is the place for art history/ art management. Fantastic econ, great internships, lots of special attention, long list of successful alums in the field.

Think about NYU, Johns Hopkins, Williams for both art history and economics. I’m a declared art history major at Johns Hopkins, the program here is very strong.

thx everybody for the helpful replies.
I was already planning to apply to univs like Columbia, Yale, NYU, Northwestern, JHU for RD-

I think I should think more carefully about my ED.
Thx =)
