im majoring in either psychology or sociology in these schools…and it’s so hard to tell which i want to go to…or which one ill fit into the best…ucsb and ucsd are BEAUTIFUL and WARM…cornell is FREEZING but yet such a good school…what should be the order?

Ive heard from a lot of people that UCSD doesnt have the best social scene, so I dont know if Id go there. Everyone seems to think its boring. Then theres UCSTD (UCSB), which is a complete party school. And like you said, Cornell is cold. Cornell is definitely best academically, though. Personally, Id go to Cornell, then UCSB, then UCSD.

k thank you.point well taken

Cornell by ALL means. Just brave the cold for 4 years. You’ll be happy that you did come graduation time.

It’s not UCSTD… that’s messing with the acronym. It’s the University of Casual Sex and Beer. On a more serious note, UCSB isn’t just a party school, it has good physics and economics departments, and I’m sure it has other strong programs as well. My friend went to UCSD and found it very boring at first and used to come home every weekend, but after a little while he was having a good time. La Jolla (San Diego) is a very nice area. Cornell is a great school academically, but yes it is cold.

I think the order should be Cornell, UCSD, UCSB academically speaking.
Socially and environmentally speaking, it’s reverse order.

well, if you can visit both, that’s what you should do. Cornell is somewhat isolated, and as you’ve noted it’s cold there. But they sell coats, and maybe you’ll love sledding down Lib slope.

Seriously, much as I like UCSB, Cornell is an elite school. Don’t go there if you’ll spend 4 years waking up every morning regretting it. And I’m guessing you’re a CA resident, so seeing a different part of the country can be a worthwhile experience even if you settle back here.

What you really need to do is make a list of criteria for picking a college. This is work, but its actually something worth doing BEFORE applying so that you find a basket of colleges you like. At this stage of the game its still worth doing to make the decision you have. List everything that matters, no matter how trivial. Then sort the list by importance, and give each school a grade. Examining your chart may help you realize which the right choice is. There’s a book by some Harvard biz-school profs called “Smart Choices” that goes into the steps for making difficult choices.

ya. i visited cornell in October (with snow already on the ground…BLAH)…and i loved it! it’ll just be hard to live with snow 8 months out of the year when i have lived in California all my life and have seen snow fall…hmmm…maybe twice in my life?..I visited UCSB and UCSD but didnt stay the weekend like at Cornell…sb obviously was gorgeous and sd was all parking lots…i didnt take any tours there or anything so all i could base everything off of was…the fact that sb is beautiful? and sd is all parking lots?..i already got into sb so im just waiting to hear from sd and cornell…hopefully the admissions will just make the decision for me…

Cornell is by far the best choice for psychology, and it is an awesome school for many other reasons. I would like to offer a dissenting opinion about the winter season. The change of seasons in the northeast is beautiful. Winter is a gorgeous season and I would rather have a cold winter than an oppressively hot summer. A fresh snow in the finger lakes region of New York is a gorgeous thing to behold. If it were not for winter there would be no fall foliage color. The arrival of spring flowers is beautiful too. Things turn from brown to green over the course of a week or so. Students like to complain about the snow and it does have inconveniences but I happen to love the change of seasons.

Buy some Goretex boots and a goose down jacket. If you are going to have a car at Cornell, it would help to have four wheel drive to get up the hills.

If you would allow weather to lead you to UCSB over Cornell, you really need to rethink your priorities. Are you planning to tell future employers you don’t do snow?

Cornell is not even in the same realm with SB and while SD is a good school, it’s still no Cornell.
