Coronavirus and US Campus issues

The mortality rate will likely go down as the number of known tested / infected will rise dramatically. Hopefully the bell curve will flatten as Dr. Fauci explains, giving our medical community the resources they need to handle this. That’s probably the biggest problem.

I like how Gov. Cuomo is handling this in NY. I’m typically not a fan but I think he is taking reasonable and decisive actions. These are the times that create true leaders.

FYI - not partisan at all. I didn’t care for Jeb Bush as my Governor but I thought he did a terrific job handling the multiples hurricanes that hit FL in a few week time span several yrs ago. Very impressive, calming, effective…and we got through it just fine!

We will get through this too!

And that’s OK if tuition is cheap. I’m fine with paying UCLA $13K per year for online courses. But the OOS students are up in arms about the $28K per year supplement they have to pay, and are looking for it to be cut for spring quarter (which will be all online).

It’s not going to be sustainable to charge $50K+ per year for online tuition if this goes on beyond the half a semester that remains of this academic year.

Cornell announced on 3/10 that when its spring break started on 3/27, students were to leave and stay home for on line studying for the rest of this semester.

Yesterday, it announced cancellation of all classes effective immediately. They will spend these 3 weeks preparing for online teaching which will start April 6 . Students are to leave campus asap. Students can petition to stay on campus on a case by case basis. We will pick her up this Mon, 2 weeks earlier than planned.

Not a word about reimbursement for dorm fees or meal plan!!!

Well talked to my son at Michigan. He said it’s not so much a ghost town. All buildings are open. His first final online is Tuesday and first online classes are Monday. He might stay since he’s in an apartment and can get more work there done vs home. I might still go up and maybe make one trip home to make it that much easier if /when he decides to come home to bring what he’s not using now. He works for the office of Academic innovation and they are still holding meetings so he’s still working, which is great. So planning etc is still happening just virtually. He can talk with anyone like counselors virtually and they are still trying to hold their conference virtually also that he planned. Students are walking around and everyone knows not to form groups etc.

@Knowsstuff I don’t want to be all negative but I think you should be ready for your S to be dealing with more serious change soon. Things are changing so rapidly and Michigan just seems to be behind a day or two on the changes. I highly doubt they are going to let students keep working on campus. If he’s living in an off campus apartment, I’m sure he’ll can stay if he wants but he might be kept from being in university buildings soon.

Seems like it could accelerate the troubles at less prestigious private colleges, particularly LACs and others that try to appeal with personal face to face instruction and environment. With the college experience no longer as much of a differentiating factor, it will just come down to cost and major, and prestige if the post graduation goals depend on prestige.

People have been writing about online and distance education being a disruptor for a while. But it may be coming true now that it is being forced on most colleges.

@homerdog… Thx. But maybe I didn’t state something correctly. The center of academic innovation is holding all meetings virtually… Instead of actually going there and having meetings, planning etc they are doing it all remotely. So no face to face contact
Just not meeting at their office on central campus. His " work " is these meetings. So it’s not like they shut down. Things are still happening and moving forward
Trust me besides going to Krogers for food etc he is bunkered down in his apartment on North Campus. He has a final on Tuesday and basically getting ready for that.

GW pulled a fast one today. Spring break is this week and with rare exception everyone needed to be prepared to leave campus and the earliest anyone would be allowed to return would be April 5th. This is fine… The problem is that they locked down the dorms at 10am this morning. Some kids still had flights today (such as mine). She went to get breakfast and came back and could not get her luggage. Had to go to housing and get some form filled out and then had to wait 30 minutes. They could have waited until the end of the day, as many other kids also had flights today. This just added to her anxiety.

Daughter returned early from Spring break trip to Dublin yesterday. Original flight went through Germany which locked down airport. Finally made it to Chicago and drove almost 3 hours with traffic to South Bend. Her campus announced its closing this week while kids were on break. Notice said they had until Tuesday 3/17 to move out of dorm. After traveling almost 18 hours she started to pack up dorm room at 10pm. Assistant Rector stopped by and asked her if she had a place to sleep off campus because she wasn’t allowed to stay in dorm. She said yes, shut her door and sleep in her room. Kids are be given little guidance as to what the expectations are.
Anxiety levels are very high.

Vassar students were sending around a petition to stay open. My niece sent around to everyone. Do t think it’s going anywhere but I understand how sad these seniors must be feeling.

S19’s SB was extended a week, then a week of remote learning. As of now, they are supposed to go back in 2 weeks. But I don’t see it. They’ve already cancelled all sports for the rest of the year so I think classes aren’t far behind. Hopefully they say he can come get his stuff soon.

The 12 yr old is in one of only 2 school districts in at least central NC that has modified. They’ve moved up SB by 3 weeks, and have added a week of remote learning. They aren’t scheduled to go back for 3 weeks.

How many students missed their flights because of this?

UC Santa Barbara just announced that the entire Spring Quarter (which starts March 30 and ends in mid-June) will be moved online. For those students who do not take summer courses (if they’re even offered), that means in-person classes will not resume until Oct. 1 when the Fall Quarter begins.

I do have to say that I appreciate the email that they sent notifying us. They include a rationale that I will share with you:

While this situation is terrible for all involved, I think it was good to share exactly why they made the decision instead of simply informing students with the generic reasoning of preventing the spread of COVID-19.

DD grad school at OU - all classes moved on line, National Weather Center (where she works) only essential employees in the building but she can continue to work remotely.

DS18 at UT Dallas, extended Spring Break an extra week and then all classes on line for the rest of the semester. He lives in an on campus apartment and could stay but has come home, His GF is home from Stanford they closed the dorms this weekend and are doing finales on line (they are on the quarter system)

DD20 just started Spring Break (central Texas) and the school is “assessing the situation” they are poised to move to online instruction all 6-12 students have a school issued iPad and they sent school iPads home with the K-5 for Spring Break. All school travel is suspended, all afterschool activities, including sports and other competitions have been concealed. Many unanswered questions about AP test, senior prom, grad night, graduation…

DH has been told to work from home.

I’m waiting for the internet to crash…

My oldest daughter’s college was on scheduled spring break last week when they got told that break was extended another week. They were basically told not to return to campus. Since then students were allowed to come back to campus to get things at an allotted time but no need to empty out dorm room and will be doing online learning. The hope is to move back on campus mid April (no guarantees). They said info on refunds for partial room/board will be forthcoming.

My youngest daughter is at a public high school. Friday was a scheduled professional development day. Before the end of the school day Thursday they were told school as usual Monday since other area schools had started to close. Within an hour of school ending for the day an email from the superintendent went out saying school is closed indefinitely later clarified to mean at least two weeks. At this point I don’t know of a single public or private school near me which is still holding classes.

@sdl0625 , is this just standard, school break, non COVID19 policy? For example, my son’s dorm (different college) has been listed on the school calendar all year as closing at 10am today for spring break. If you need to stay later, you need to fill out a form. Same with any early returns.

@TS0104 its regular spring break starting and then online learning, with only those who absolutely have to stay campus doing so until at least April 5th at this point. So this was the COVID19 related policy, but originally had a later date.

@Knowsstuff I’m getting my kid out of Ann Arbor. She’s packing up this weekend and she has a flight out Monday back to CA. Everything is essentially shut down here in my area.

One of the new apartment buildings near campus reported a coronavirus case.

She had a test for this coming Tuesday, but the professor pushed the test back a week and then she’ll be able to access the test online from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM PST. The professor told students they‘ll have 12 hours to take the test, which is really cool.

@sushiritto. Well I hear a different story on North Campus. My son and his roommate are there and he says people are walking around etc. All building are open. He has his work meetings virtually now. Still maybe planning his conference to go virtual. Know about the kid on central. His final for one class is Tuesday so he doesn’t want to deal with anything till then. He couldn’t find toliet paper at Krogers…

I would like him to come home this weekend but he thinks he might study better there. Will see. I might go up anyway to get his futon and half a load to take to my mom’s house for storage then see if we can’t pack everything else up but if he stays I can at least get a good chunk home… Geez this is when I wish my kids took planes to school. They take too much stuff when within driving distance… Lol.

Safe travels! ?:airplane:?

But the school is going to have to make up for that, either by using more of the reserves or by raising R&B charges in the future. The fixed costs for those building are not going away. The universities are still paying salaries for maintenance, still paying utilities.
