Coronavirus and US Campus issues

I would guess that every college is planning on holding classes on campus this fall. Right now, that is only wishful thinking. (It would be financial suicide to tell incoming Frosh that they can pay big bucks to take classes at home on Zoom.)

Daniels’ crystal ball is no better than anyone else’s.

Our daughter’s commencement has been rescheduled to August 9. I guess we’ll keep our fingers crossed!

@bluebayou I think it’s irresponsible for colleges to say anything definitive about fall classes. No one knows what will happen. If colleges are going to put any info out there, if should be a tentative plan and, preferably, with a back up plan. I get that it will take time to develop a plan. Colleges are drinking from a fire hose right now just trying to get through admitted student online functions and getting a class together for fall but, soon, they will all have to decide on fall plans. Bowdoin’s task force says it will give info to the President of the college by June 15th, he and others will review and then share with students and parents. Looking at that timeline, my guess is that there will be a public answer by July 1 even if it’s a tentative plan with options to change it. Not sure what the date would be when colleges would need to make a hard decision. Maybe six weeks before kids arrive? In the meantime, I’m sure all schools are getting ready for both online and on campus options.

I don’t disagree.

I don’t disagree. Even if this thing gets under control by say late June, without a vaccine, there is no reason to believe that Wave 2 is not on the way. And colleges have to plan for that, too. Sure, students are young and relatively healthy, but many faculty and staff are not.

Heck, at this point, even the ncaa has to be extremely worried about fall football which, regardless of what some might think about D1 sports, is a huge money maker for most colleges. FB and men’s basketball (huge loss without March Madness) funds the scholarships of nearly every other sport, including women’s sports. (That scholarship money is already committed regardless of whether the sport actually operates next year.)

The nfl even has to be concerned.

We were talking about NCAA football at dinner. Our D said the football players usually take courses over the summer on campus and practice with the team captains before official practices start with the coaches. I would think they’ll need to make a decision about Fall sport even sooner than academic courses.

I have no clue how but Beloit is still planning on their commencement mid May according to their website. I will have to check with my daughter if she’s hearing something else. Maybe it’s not updated yet.

https://www.pennlive.com/pennstatefootball/2019/03/who-are-the-richest-and-poorest-power-five-college-football-programs-here-are-all-65-ranked-bottom-to-top.html indicates that 60 of the 65 NCAA D1 FBS teams made profit in 2017 (the list is ranked by revenue, not profit, though).

NCAA D1 FCS, D2, and D3 football are probably less likely to be making profit.

“I would hope that students would get some sort of tuition discount (10%, 25%, 50%?),”

I can’t see them giving tuition discounts, but room and board they already started doing.

OH I so hope that some sports are back on. Last night on ESPN 2 they had 2 known basketball players at their own homes playing NBA 2K again each other. That’s not the worst part. I actually watched it for 20 minutes!! ?

Even though many aren’t likely making a profit, they are still bringing in revenue that is important to the athletic departments.

We received our refund from Baylor yesterday. They refunded half of D’s meal plan, dorm and campus parking for the semester. They have also announced that all summer classes will be online.

Graduation has been postponed until August.

D is moving into a single apartment this fall, that was already in place before this hit.

We still don’t know when we will be allowed on campus to clear out her dorm but at this point I don’t really care. I have no interest in getting on a plane and flying 2000 miles anytime soon.

While a lot of schools have already made decisions about summer classes going online and cancelling summer research, Bowdoin is still holding out hope. In a letter from the president today, he said he will wait until after the April 30th stay in place order to make a decision.

This gives me hope that, when they make the decision about fall, they will do so at the latest possible time with the most recent information on social distancing guidelines.

Ohio State already announced that the summer session will be online. But their summer session was scheduled to start May 6th. So don’t think they had the option to wait until after April 30.

Won’t your school just put her stuff in storage for you. Many schools have offered this… At their costs… This should make her life much easier when moving back in

@momzilla2D Bowdoin does not have summer classes, per se, but summer research and some camps. Spring classes don’t end until May 10th or so. I think summer stuff is supposed to start in early July.

@Knowsstuff
We haven’t received any communication about that but I doubt it. If they did that for every student I can’t imagine the amount of manpower that would take. No one has been allowed back on campus since spring break so the whole school would need to be packed up and stored.

There were two confirmed cases of faculty and one of a student the week following spring break so everything was put on lock down at that point.

Totally get it. At Michigan where my son is that was offered and even at Beloit where my daughter is at
Just thought it was more common place.

Purdue also offered to put students’ belongings in storage for students who couldn’t get back to campus.

Yea, Big Ten! ??
