tbf: NYC could still test him if they wanted to as they have the protocols. Or better yet, ABC journalists could make clear that he doesn’t meet the CDC recommendations/guidelines for testing, so NYC/NYS chooses not to test him. Instead, it’s easier to blame the “Feds”.
In the last two weeks I’ve had three scheduled appointments at doctors and I’m kind of amazed at how they are not set up well for spreading any virus. for example all three bathrooms in the different offices had standard door knobs that you have to use your hands to turn instead of handles. One of the bathrooms had a toilet that you had to turn the lever to flush (vs something you can push with your foot), and a few bathrooms had 2 handled faucets that instead of a single lever. All had touchless paper towel dispensers at least! since medical facilities are places where sick people go I really believe that they should do a better job in these places of stopping the transmission of germs - not just for coronavirus.
Also, I have started bringing my own pen to sign papers.
Small things that are not that difficult can help with this and other contagions.
"…despite repeated pleas from health officials not to purchase them, Americans can’t stop snatching up masks and respirators.
The mask boom has prompted sellers to jack up prices and exploit demand. This has meant a shortage for medics who need them. And Chinese Americans are buying in bulk to send to their families overseas.
“We need to make sure those N95 masks are available for the doctors and nurses that are going to be taking care of individuals that have this illness,” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield said during a House Foreign Affairs hearing on Thursday. “And it really does displease me, to find people going out, there is no role for these masks in the community.”
New poster here. Have been reading for a while. I wonder if you think it is safe to fly within the US right now. We are supposed to fly soon and I’m a bit concerned. Thanks!
Note: the labs must validate their tests and submit paperwork for emergency authorization within 15 days. Which pretty much means the tests must be in condition for FDA approval at the time of their use. Plus, only high complexity labs can do this (meaning labs having very skilled technical staff). Makes sense.
Please point me to where in there it tells you what to do if you are on your way back from a country other than China, say Italy? I’d love to see it.
IMO, the quality of info on the CDC website directed at citizens and their concerns and questions is minimal and subpar. Believe me, I’ve looked closely for stuff. Not very helpful.
I would go and be careful not to touch anything (then touch my face) and wash hands very frequently. Also, there are worse places to be quarantined than Hawaii…
Thanks for the follow-up question. We are still in wait and see mode. I know Italy (one of their destination cities) was recently upgraded to a number 3 alert which is concerning to us.
One of D’s classmates going has a father which is a pretty prominent local doctor and he said that by June things should be much better. Again one person’s opinion but he is letting his daughter go at this point.
We have until next Wednesday to decide. Will keep everyone posted as others might have similar out of the country travel plans the coming months.
ITALY - 239 new cases for a total of 1,128 and 8 new deaths bringing the total to 29.
JAPAN - 9 new cases.
The cases include 239 people on land and 705 from the Diamond Princess.
One recent case includes a man in his 70s who was a Diamond Princess cruise ship passenger. He had disembarked the ship after confirming his virus test was negative on February 20.
IRAQ - 5 new cases, four in Baghdad and one in the central Babel province, taking the total to 13.
EQUADOR - 1 confirmed case so another country in South America.
I am a person who gets sick more easily than most other people due to genetics. Those who don’t get sick often, I think you are super fortunate!
The high fatality rate for people over 60 (I’m not over 60) is also very concerning. Maybe the Hubei numbers are so high because their system is overtaxed. I hope the actual numbers when medical facilities are not overwhelmed are much lower than those in Hubei.
I worry about the spread in this country and the lack of testing, lack of monitoring of people who came from infected areas not on the narrow list, people who came in before Feb 2, etc. A lot of the decisions don’t make sense to me.
The only reason I’ll be stocking up is because there are already runs on supplies and while we’ll be fine, the unpredictability of when baby’s coming means we can’t really leave it to chance.
We’d be fine if people just didn’t panic.
@suteiki77 my mom has an autoimmune disease and just generally crappy immune system so I definitely get the getting sick often. She just flew to Florida with absolutely no fears.
I find it “interesting” that info keeps coming out from Washington State and the county but not from CDC and the Federal government. The latter seem to be not putting out much info - or am I missing something? It’s seems easier to get info on what’s going on in other countries than our own.
