Coronavirus in the US

**USA - 2 more coronavirus cases confirmed in Washington

"Seattle & King County Public Health “announced on Sunday two more confirmed cases of COVID-19 in King County residents, bringing the total of confirmed cases” in the county to six, and eight in the state, according to a Seattle & King County Public Health press release.

The two new cases are both males in their 60s with underlying health conditions. One is “in critical but stable condition” at Valley Medical Center in Renton. The other is in critical condition at Virginia Mason Medical Center, the release said.

“This number is expected to rise as more people are tested and results confirmed,” according to the release.

A spokesperson for Washington Public Health said they were aware of the new cases." (CNN)

Can anybody account for all 8? 2 today, 2 yesterday from the LTC facility, the one who died, the very first case awhile back that recovered. 2 more?

ETA info from KIRO 7 News:

“Labs in Washington are performing up to 200 tests per day to see who else may have the virus. Additional cases are expected…On Saturday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention flew in 10 experts to help the local health department track where the coronavirus came from. …Several fire crews from Kirkland previously responded to the coronavirus patients at Life Care Center. When they showed up, they had no idea that they were potentially exposed to this contagious disease. Seven firefighters from Station 21 were quarantined Saturday. None of them showed symptoms as of Saturday evening.”

I am going to the Gartner conference in Grapevine Texas in 3 weeks. I wonder if they will cancel the conference?

I am sitting in the food course of a ski resort here in north jersey. No empty table for us to eat. There are many people here, the bathroom line is 10 mins long. Parking lots are overflown I had to park half a mile away. No hand sanitizer anywhere people just go about their business enjoying the fake snow. I like what I see.

This normalcy wasn’t worth a mentioning if it wasn’t for Covi.

Question for microbiologists:
How do ethanol based hand sanitizers disrupt/kill protein coated viruses? When I studied microbiology we learned that ethanol at 70% kills bacteria and fungi through osmotic disruption of cell membranes. Proteins, including viral coat proteins, are susceptible to denaturation by phenol or oxidation by bleach or peroxide, but are relatively impervious to ethanol. Yet virtually every expert recommends ethanol based hand sanitizers.

Ethanol sanitizers do act as efficient surfactants to assist removal of virus particles from skin, but do they actually inactivate the virus? I like the advice presented in the pinned thread with recommendation for nitrile gloves. In addition to reducing the chance you will touch your face while wearing gloves, it is easy to wash gloved hands in dilute bleach- something you wouldn’t do without gloves.

Smart & Final was fully stocked with gloves & hand sanitizer last week. Heading back today to look for zinc based lozenges and more gloves! (Southern California)

I heard the HHS Secretary say that the nursing home in Kirkland, Washington had some connection with or sent patients to the hospital where the man died of COVID-19.

A student who had been quarantined at UC Davis was tested and does NOT have the virus.

Workers at the Louvre want that museum to be closed. Tens of thousands of people from all over visit it everyday.

Does anyone know if domestic flights are doing anything out of the ordinary to clean and make flights as safe as possible? Or is it just not possible given that everyone is sharing and breathing the same air for the duration of the flight?

My son took a total of 4 flights this weekend and I’m scheduled to fly (within the country) at the end of the month. Are we just hedging our bets by flying?

I live not too far from the area. The hospital is in a large medical campus with a number of nearby affiliated medical clinics, including primary care and geriatrics specialists, the system. The majority of folks who live nearby use that hospital system, so even if they never stepped into the hospital building, yes they have “connection.” Several members of my family have been to the hospital ER in the past and have nothing but good things to say about their staff and the level of care.

Distilled water is apparently out a bunch of places too.

I guess this is the kick I need to finally just buy a distiller. I need it for my apap machine.

Coronavirus has (I believe) a lipid envelope which the ethanol would disrupt.

From what I’ve read, there’s an exposure time for alcohol based sanitizers to work.

Thinking it’s 60 seconds or so but that’s subject to correction by anyone who feels it’s either: too short or too long.

Two Bay Area health care workers are “presumptive” positive. (from Alameda and Solano County–but both treated the patient who is now at UC Davis.)

I tell you, it’s a little freaky reading about the outbreak in WA. I go to somewhere in Kirkland pretty much every day I’m home… the gym, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s. Have had a number of procedures at Evergreen. I have t been home for a week. Have people been flooding the Costco’s, cleaning out all the store shelves, @BunsenBurner? It’s just weird to be reading about this…

@catahoula, maybe I’m remembering this incorrectly, but isn’t the 60 seconds for sanitizers with bleach, otherwise four minutes? Maybe someone can confirm this.

@TatinG The SouthernSociety of Neurosurgeons met in Scottsdale last week. It is business as usual. My son went. He also said one member of their practice was vacationing in Spain last week and another was debating his trip, scheduled this week.

@aMacMom I think Cold Eeeze is a good brand of zinc lozenge

I’m wondering, does anyone know, as far as the testing goes, can they test you and determine if you’ve had it in the past? Even if you’ve recovered?

No idea! We are out of town and are heading home soon. Here in Denver life goes as usual.

Well this isn’t good. One of the new cases in WA is from a postal worker.
