Coronavirus in the US

Trying to find a source for this. Where did you see it?

New story that the CDC recommends people over 60 and those with health issues stay home as much as possible.

CDC says older adults should ā€œstay at home as much as possibleā€ due to coronavirus
From CNN Health’s Elizabeth Cohen and John Bonifield

Amid a coronavirus outbreak in the United States, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted new guidance on its website, encouraging older people and people with severe chronic medical conditions to ā€œstay at home as much as possible.ā€

This advice is on a CDC website that was posted Thursday.

Venture County - Another Grand Princess cruise passenger is now infected with the novel coronavirus

A sixth person who was previously aboard the Grand Princess cruise ship that voyaged last month from San Francisco to Mexico is confirmed to have been infected with novel coronavirus.

The person, who did not feel well upon arriving home from the cruise, is a resident of Ventura County in Southern California, according to Ventura County Public Health. The patient has since remained at home with mild symptoms, according to county officials, only leaving to receive medical treatment.

The patient’s spouse, who also remains under home quarantine, was also on the cruise but does not have symptoms.

Some context: The California Department of Public Health notified Ventura County on March 4 that six of their residents had traveled on the cruise. The county has contacted the four remaining passengers, one of whom is symptomatic and being tested at this time. The remaining three have no symptoms." (CNN)

This might have been posted upthread, SARS-CoV-2 vaccine trials (safety testing) will be conducted in Seattle area starting next week …

Seattle is well positioned to run the trials, not only because of the outbreak, but because of the HVTN being centered there …

I’m guessing that they are going to utilize this infrastructure and expertise.

Press conference. Pence announced it.

Here is a question that I am still not sure about… I read that someone in Wuhan had re-tested positive for it, but were they symptomatic again? From what I understand once someone has Mono for example, it will show up that they have had it, but it rarely ā€œflares back upā€ . Also from what I understand if you get a strain of Flu, your likelihood of getting the same strain is not there.

So we go back to could family members pass this back and forth to each other? and could you get it again. I guess there is not enough data out there.

Also since many young people are not symptomatic it probably is more prevalent and harder to stop.

I do believe caution is needed but I think there is some overboarding happening.

@ridingthewave Pence gave the 21 number at his press conference–19 crew, 2 patients.

@ridingthewave here’s the cspan link…it’s long but the Q&A is near the end.

oh whoops, I thought you meant the Trump/CDC briefing. The Pence one was later.

Thanks, folks.

There have been several mentions of people recovering then turning positive again. They are in here somewhere. China has built recuperating facilities for just this reason. Once ā€œrecoveredā€ they quarantine for another 14 days in these facilities.

In the past week, one man in his 30s who was presumed to be recovered, quickly got sick again and died.

There are also at least 2 different strains out there - being called L and S. I did see mention that one of the men who died in WA was found to have both strains. Only saw it mentioned once so didn’t post it, don’t know the validity of it.

No data on whether catching a strain keeps you immune from catching it again. Did see reference from one specialist that said any immunity wouldn’t be lasting long term. Maybe because of the mutant strains?

Yes, children are often asymptomatic. It is believed that asymptomatic people are contagious but not as contagious as symptomatic people.

Bottom line, I think there is still a lot we don’t know.

"Pence has said those on the ship who need to be quarantined will be quarantined and those who need treatment will receive it. There are more than 3,500 people on the ship, counting passengers and crew, and Pence said he anticipated about 1,100 needing to be kept onboard.

The US vice president said 19 of those who tested positive were crew members and two were passengers." (Guardian)

Should we assume he means all will be quarantined? If someone coming back from any part of Italy needs to self-quarantine, surely these people need to quarantine.

Are they not testing it for this particular coronavirus? It will be good to know what it is. It could be even longer looking at the way it spreads so fast.

1st Case In Kentucky

"Kentucky has confirmed its first case of novel coronavirus, Gov. Andy Beshear announced late Friday afternoon.

The case is in Lexington, and the individual is in isolation at a medical facility, though Beshear wouldn’t say which one…

Kentucky has so far tested a total of 10 people for COVID-19 – nine of those tests returned negative. The results from the first positive test, conducted at the state’s public health lab in Frankfort, returned on Friday, Beshear said. He would not release more information about the individual who contracted COVID-19, saying more time is needed for state epidemiologists to evaluate the case.

As of Monday, Kentucky’s Department for Public Health had acquired the capability to test for the viral respiratory illness at its state laboratory in Frankfort. Previously, the only option for state health officials, like many in the region, was to send their test kits to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

The state currently has the capacity to conduct between 800 and 1,000 tests for potential cases of COVID-19, Stack said on Thursday, with the opportunity to request even more resources from the CDC, should that become necessary."

Okay, the virus can survive on surfaces for perhaps a long time. This is not Ebola. This thread, IMHO, feeds the beast.

Quick summary: Prnce said that they tested 46 people and 21 tested positive, 19 crew and 2 passengers. I believe ve they were testing those passengers who did back-to-back with the earlier cruise and were symptomatic. He also said that over the weekend, the ship will dock at a non-public port and everyone will be tested. Those testing positive will be quarantined, as with the original Wuhan returnees. Don’t know where. Don’t know what they’ll do with the negative test passengers.

Pence also said that (I think) 900,000 tests had been shipped out to medical centers and at least as many more would be shipped in the next few days. Also advised me not to cruise and to think carefully about flying. Well, not me personally.

We’re invited to a boat warming party tomorrow where just about everyone is over 60 and many have mild underlying conditions. I’m not sure if I was warned not to attend!

Have there been any confirmed cases of death or extended illness for someone who has not already been ill?

Supposedly, additional tests for a variety of surfaces are being worked on. Definitely takes some time.

Not sure where they are tallied but Lackland AFB still has eleven patients in quarantine from the earlier cruise ship. As they test negative, people are being quietly released. (Not to malls.)

One difference is more people die. It is much stronger than the cold and flu for mortality numbers. Symptoms can range from absolutely nothing to pneumonia and organ failure leading to death. Even people with milder symptoms, the recovery period can be as much as 6 weeks based on studies out of China, which is about all we have to go on right now. In other countries, it has only surfaced in the past week or two.
