Um. Yeah! I don’t understand how it could be anything else. Oy.
Does anyone know why those people were chosen for testing?

Interesting article about the CDC testing problems and delay
https://www.technologyreview.com/s/615323/why-the-cdc-botched-its-coronavirus-testing/
This is what I said a few weeks ago : private labs should have been allowed to develop tests and awaiting for government institutions to save the day is foolish.
Victorian health authorities are trying to contact about 70 patients of a Melbourne doctor who has developed coronavirus after returning from the US.
"The doctor is the state’s 11th case of the novel coronavirus and the state health minister, Jenny Mikakos, says he attended work and treated patients after her was symptomatic.
“I have to say I am flabbergasted that a doctor that has flulike symptoms has presented to work,” Mikakos said.
The doctor returned from the US on 29 February and saw approximately 70 patients last week between Monday 2 March and Friday 6 March at the Toorak Clinic on Malvern Road. The clinic has been since closed.
Patients have been contacted by text message, phone or email and two patients the doctor treated in a Malvern nursing home have been isolated.
All patients the doctor saw and all clinic staff have been asked to self-isolate for 14 days. The clinic’s other patients have been asked to monitor their symptoms.
Passengers on the flight with the doctor would be contacted, Mikakos said." (Guardian)
South Carolina reports two presumptive positive cases of coronavirus
"An elderly woman and a patient with a travel history to Europe are the first two cases of novel coronavirus in the US state of South Carolina.
According to South Carolina’s Department of Health and Environmental Control, the two cases are not linked.
The first patient is an elderly woman from Kershaw County who has been hospitalized and is in isolation.
The second is a woman from Charleston County who recently traveled to France and Italy. She did not require hospitalization and has self-isolated at home." (CNN)
I heard around 100 were showing symptoms and it had been said they were going to be tested. Not sure why they only tested 46.
Which is what they eventually went to after wasting time.
Third Washington state nursing home reports coronavirus infection
"A resident of a nursing home in Issaquah, Washington tested positive last night for the novel coronavirus, according to Eastside Fire Deputy Chief Rich Burke.
The patient has since been transferred from the facility to a local hospital, and three firefighters who responded to the scene have self-quarantined." (CNN)
I think we had a post about one of these, sounds like there are 2 now.
Two federal health screeners at Los Angeles International Airport have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to an email sent to their colleagues today and seen by Reuters.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention employees were conducting secondary screenings of passengers arriving from overseas, including from China, and have been directed to self-quarantine until March 17, the email said.
“At this time, we cannot confirm where these two screeners were exposed,” said the email, which was sent by a senior CDC official. “Let us keep our colleagues in our thoughts during this period.”
I may have missed this, but is there a link somewhere about people over 60 needing to stay home, avoid crowds, etc.? I looked at the CDC site, and I can’t find anything that has that specific number (60). Just “older” adults. What is the definition of “older”? I know some have said they have seen this advice (maybe in CA) for people over 50.
If I am going to persuade the octogenarians in my dh’s family to heed this advice, I would like a link to something specific to show them.
Thanks in advance!
You’re welcome.
I imagine Larry Ellison will spend whatever it takes to ensure the necessary safety measure and protocols are in place.
Have a great time at the tennis!
I have a family bat mitzvah tomorrow and I’m sure there won’t be the usual kissing that goes on (especially since the big outbreak in NY spread through the lawyer who was at bat mitzvah not far from where ours is.)
Cuomo gave another very clear and concise presser today. I listened to most of it. It’s posted on his twitter feed if anyone is interested. Iirc, all but two of the 44 cases are linked to the lawyer from New Rochelle.
I loved his statement because it’s math!
Really a stark contrast from some of the other pressers I, and I’m sure you, have heard.
An employee at Danbury (CT) hospital is a confirmed case. She resides in NY state.
USA - At least 304 cases of coronavirus confirmed in the US

A total of 15 people have died from the virus in the United States – 14 in Washington state and one in California." (CNN)
CHINA - 99 new cases totaling 80,651 and 28 new deaths totaling 3,070.
About a quarter of China’s new confirmed cases and almost all of those outside Wuhan originated outside the country on Friday.
Outside of central China’s Hubei province, there were 25 new confirmed cases reported on March 6, of which 24 came from outside China.
Most of these were in China’s northwestern Gansu province, from quarantined passengers who entered the provincial capital of Lanzhou on commercial flights from Iran between March 2 and March 5.
The capital Beijing reported four new cases on Friday, of which three came from Italy.
There were also three cases in Shanghai that originated abroad, and one in Guangdong province on Friday, according to the National Health Commission.
The total nationwide number of cases that originated outside China reached 60 as of the end of Friday.
For the second day in a row, there were no new infections in Hubei outside of the provincial capital of Wuhan." (Guardian)
SOUTH KOREA - 174 new cases bringing the total to 6,767. Death toll remains at 44.
Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip said authorities had almost finished tests on more than 200,000 followers of a church in southeastern Daegu at the centre of the outbreak.
JAPAN - 55 new infections reported from Yamaguchi prefecture in the southwest to Hokkaido in the north
Thirteen of the new cases were people who visited a live music venue in Osaka or their family members
The local CT sources have said she is an employee of both Norwalk & Danbury hospitals. I have also seen the same on my son’s college Covid-19 page.
I only mention the distinction because Norwalk is closer to New Rochelle. No telling how it was contracted.
3rd & 4th NJ Cases
The man in his 60s has been in a hospital in Camden County since March 3 and is in stable condition and the man in his 50s has been hospitalized at Englewood Hospital in Bergen County since March 5, according to joint statements released by Gov. Phil Murphy, Acting Gov. Sheila Oliver, and Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli.

This is an EXCELLENT catch. I too have looked at the CDC website and the age 60 is nowhere. At all.
@menloparkmom You are correct this is different. So any guesses are speculation. Both dire and hopeful, equally. It’s a bit of financial detective work.
Outside of the personal level health and family experiencing loss. This can be looked at longer term from a financial standpoint. There’s lots of data and analysis available.
we have seen massive global supply shock concurrent to war that have been studied. Oil especially in recent years. We have massive monetary stimulus and global liquidity. Financial institutions are incredibly well capitalized as are the balance sheets of the multinationals.
Will there be economic disruption? Yes. However Chinese factory production in province is ramping back up. Italy and Iran are very statistically minor to either supply chains or global gdp. South Korea is moreso. Certain industries will have heavier burdens to overcome. This too when experienced by those individuals is hard.
On the health front it will matter but h1n1 was actually declared a pandemic. SARS Mers swine flu and legionaries have all been studied.
Many scientists are not 100 percent sure that when this is all reviewed and total mortality versus morbidity rates are known including the large numbers of infected but not known it may be very similar to flu. A very serious medical issue and to be treated as such. However, the daily blow by blow of clusters and patient by patient focus will be seen through a clearer lens.
However this is only my view relative to panic. Not to downplay the grief or pain of the families directly impacted.
Financially speaking. It’s all about uncertainty and fear. Both are powerful forces. I remain hopeful and cautious.
3rd RI Case
This person is a female in her 60s. She is at home with mild symptoms. This person was tested because she was symptomatic and had direct, face-to-face contact with a person with confirmed COVID-19 in New York in late February.
Extensive contact tracing is being done on this case. All people who have had direct, face-to-face contact with this person are being instructed to self-quarantine.
Contact tracing includes children and adults associated with Smithfield Avenue Nursery in Pawtucket, where this person works. Initial studies of COVID-19 indicate that the virus does not affect children as severely as adults.
Will this article work to convince your parents?

As I mentioned, my parents are already limiting social contact. My 85 year old dad is an Eagle Scout and lives his life by the Boy Scout “Be Prepared” Motto.
A second worker at LAX has tested positive. No link. Heard on a news teaser.
A really, really good piece written by an ER doctor. I highly recommend reading it.
I am concerned, but I am not worried. I am not going to schedule any non-essential, non-emergency visits (meaning all for now) to medical clinics. I will let doctors attend to those who need it the most. As a potential carrier, I am not going to visit places vulnerable to outbreaks. Should I get infected (and chances are a lot of us will), I will sit this crap out at home so my germs are not forwarded to anyone. I realize that I am fortunate to be able to do so.
