Coronavirus in the US

Can’t admitted students just tour with all the juniors? Those aren’t called off (yet).

Most of the experts are saying that having coronavirus roll though the population slowly is much better than a spike we can’t handle. Limiting large events is just one of those measures.

@homerdog

Literally no one forces you to open or read this thread. If you don’t want to, don’t.

I have been keeping up because it’s interesting to me. I have zero anxiety about the virus.

Perhaps they don’t want folks to buy tickets then have it cancelled. Not easy decisions to make, one way or the other.

Tip: If one doesn’t like the thread and/or it makes them anxious, they don’t need to click on it. Again, from those of us who are contributing and commenting regularly, I don’t see panic. Some of us find it interesting and compelling for many different reasons - reasons beyond school visits, etc.

I’m in favor of college visits and attending admitted students events. However, in the current environment, the risk of having infections on college campuses outweighs the benefits. A single infection on campus could potentially affect the lives of thousands of students and their educational progress. Taking online classes isn’t what we send our kids to colleges for.

@doschicos… Do you sleep at all?. Lol. ?

Thx for the updates…

This is really a first-world problem, lol. If you can afford $350k for school, you can afford to fly in and visit the campus on your own. What am I missing here?

New York governor declares state of emergency
From CNN

"Gov. Andrew Cuomo has declared a state of emergency due to the coronavirus in order to have “a more expedited purchasing and testing protocol,” according to a press conference held this afternoon.

“I have officially done a declaration of emergency which gives us certain powers. We’re going to be doing purchasing and hiring more staff, especially to help local health departments that are very stressed," Cuomo said.
Cuomo added: “We have a more expedited purchasing and testing protocol and we’re going to be doing that.”"

** California’s Madera County confirms 1st **
From CNN

"Dr. Simon Paul, of Madera County Public Health, reported one confirmed case of novel coronavirus in Madera County, California, today.

The case is the spouse of a couple that returned from a Princess Cruise voyage and whom California Department of Public Health contacted. The Madera County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) began monitoring the patient on March 5, according to a release from MCDPH.

When the individual developed symptoms, MCPDH coordinated with Madera Community Hospital for medical care and testing, the release said.

According to the release, the patient is currently in stable condition.

By the numbers: This latest case brings the number of people confirmed and presumed to have coronavirus in the state of California to 66."

We had a campus visit scheduled for today and I cancelled. My daughter got a little bit disappointed but she will get over it. Did not see a great benefit in getting into a crowd with people from all over the country to see a campus we already knew and where she will attend anyway for the next 4 years.

Sad news - hotel where some are quarantined collapsed:

Search and rescue is underway.

@katliamom events are cancelled so, even if one can afford it, there’s no event to attend. This isn’t really the thread for this detail I guess. My point is that some people, like my doctor friend, think it’s just fine to fly on a plane and visit a school.

I believe these college campuses are not closed. So if anyone wants to go for a visit on their own, the certainly can go there and do a self guided tour.

That’s a lot different than putting a large group of accepted students and families in a room together…where they could potentially spread germs.

So @homerdog if your accepted student event is cancelled…just go to visit the place on your own.

You don’t need events to visit a school and determine a fit. Those events are tailored to get one to say “yes” but aren’t reflective of day to day college life. So, arrange your own visit. I haven’t heard of a college barring visitors yet.

Also, as much as CC likes to talk about fit, most college students would be completely happy, content, and well educated on a number of campuses. For most, they’ve crafted a list of schools where they’ll be happy and which have the academics they are looking for.

But as you yourself said, you can SEE the campus. No one is requiring you to plunk down $350k for a school sight unseen. And having been to many a campus “event,” I can tell you they’re not terribly enlightening nor do they offer pertinent information you can’t get through other means. Chin up! This really isn’t a big problem. Where as campus liability issues ARE a big problem. Hence these cancellations.

^^^totally agree. Some of our best visits where going a day earlier and walking around BUT… asking students where the best pizza was then going to it ?

I really appreciate the generosity of the folks who are curating and providing information for us on this thread. I am over 60 and have a couple of tough underlying conditions so I am more than a bit concerned. I wish that those people who think we overreacting would move on from this thread. They are adding nothing to the conversation.

I think that if the mortality rate for children was 10+% instead of those over 60 (or whatever), there would be a completely different reaction.

It’s going to take a huge community effort to minimize the damage from this virus and save as many lives as possible.

I have anxiety about the virus because it’s driving my husband’s business (student travel) into the ground. If business is as dead in April/May as it is now, he will be laying off staff. Or worse!

@katliamom

I have anxiety about some things associated with the virus, like the fact that I still can’t find distilled water!, but I personally don’t have anxiety about succumbing to the virus. I should’ve been more clear.

I’ll still do my part to slow down the spread because even though I might not be affected, someone else might be.

@doschicos
Thank you for all the updates. This has become my main source of the coronavirus updates. And as somebody who lives in NY, I indeed want to hear about every single case. I also want to know how things are around the world, as this is indeed a global issue. The more knowledgeable we all are the better for all of us.

Thanks again for all the work you have put into this.

BTW Are there any scientific theories/data/predictions regarding the virus and spring/summer weather?

I understood what you meant. My point was real people on this thread are affected by this virus whether or not the crisis is media-driven or over-reactive in nature. And I too like staying up-to-date here.
