They mention the conference for only one of the cases. One person was staying in Boston, and 2 other people were in contact with an Austrian woman who came from Boston.
Of course, they could all be linked to the conference, but chances are pretty good there has been more than one source of the virus in Boston.
"Airline Alitalia is reorganising air services at Milan and Venice airports from Monday following the Italian governmentâs coronavirus measures.
It will operate only domestic flights to and from Milan Linate Airport and serve international routes from Rome airport.
All national and international flights will be suspended to and from Milan Malpensa airport." (Guardian)
A sign of things moving back to normal in China:
IKEA reopens nine Chinese stores
Furniture brand IKEA has reopened a further nine stores in China this weekend, according to Reuters. The company had closed all 30 stores in the country in January due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, with five being reopened last weekend. (CNBC)
Washington state is considering mandatory containment measures
"Washington state is considering whether mandatory measures are necessary to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Gov. Jay Inslee said on CBSâ âFace the Nation.â Washington is the hardest-hit state, with more than 100 cases and at least 16 deaths.
âWe certainly are contemplating requirements for what we call social distancing,â Inslee said Sunday. âWe are contemplating some next steps, particularly to protect our vulnerable populations, and our nursing homes and the like, and we are looking to determine whether mandatory measures are required.â " (CNBC)

The individual tested positive for coronavirus yesterdayâŠcomes a few days after the first case of coronavirus was identified in Williamson County.
My friends just got back from an annual cruise to the Caribbean, one that my husband and I usually go on but had already decided not to take this time (decision had to do with cost, not the virus). I asked them if they had noticed more of an effort to sanitize the ship this year and they said, âNo, actually we saw fewer efforts! Not the usual insistence on people using hand sanitizer before going into the dining room, for instance.â Scary.
D.C.'s first patient is Reverend Timothy Cole of Christ Church Georgetown. it says he was diagnosed with the flu âseveral weeks ago,â but Iâm not clear if thatâs the same illness?
We are getting an unknown number of new asymptomatic evacuees from the cruise ship off the California coast at Lackland in SATX. Front page of our local paper. They will join the 21 infected people already there. Not sure where these folks are counted. Not in Texas numbers. In their home state numbers? Or not counted?
Iâm just shocked. I always respected the CDC as the world experts in infectious diseases. I did not follow closely about the departure and non-replacement of the pandemic team in the last years. I think they are likely understaffed and underfunded. The insistence on the American test over any other existing ones and lack of testing for 6 weeks doesnât make any sense to me. It makes me wonder if economics were at play, the way China refused America help to develop a vaccine sooner, I assume for financial reasons. That vaccine is going to make a lot of money for the developers. We could have done so much of a better job with containment. Iâm also shocked by the current administrationâs reaction to it and seeming lack of understanding of the gravity of the situation for quite a while. Whether someone likes or doesnât like them on other issues, I would have thought this type of issue would be one people would agree upon and work together to solve. Thinking the virus will poof away and having that impact your decisions at reacting to it is amazing to me.
Could be just on its own which is what many trackers have done for Diamond Princess. In fact, Iâm sure the president will insist on it given his concern for wanting the number low (losing that by the hour). Notice CDC separates out all the Wuhan and Diamond Princess evacuees into a different bucket.
They havenât had any budget cuts. That wasnât approved. Underfunded and lack of expertise is not an issue.
I wish this thread stayed away from political issues and partisan opportunities for a health issue. Everyone is on board and the scientists are really calling the shots.
You have a fever. Even if you found out today that you donât have coronavirus, that wouldnât mean you should âstop self isolating.â If you have a fever, youâre most likely contagious with something-and that something could really take down a vulnerable person.
Well if my extended family is any indication, people are definitely not heeding the advice about social distance, not hugging, kissing etc.! I had to keep telling everyone Iâm not K&H but I was one of the only ones - and it was a big Bat Mitzvah.
What else I picked up - cousin was in Shanghai from beginning of January for two weeks on business. She heard nothing while there until the day she was flying home when one of her Chinese business partners, who had booked flight to New York through Wuhan - because it was cheaper - flight was cancelled. Since she was flying direct from Shanghai herâs was unaffected.
They couldnât figure out why at first, then someone from here emailed her.
And her H, who is CEO of ginormous multi-national company related to travel told my H financially this year is already lost and this is after a December which was one of their best ever.
We donât have enough ventilators in this country to handle the load if âmany of usâ need them. Nor do we have enough medical staff to care for a large number of vented patients even if we had adequate numbers of ventilators. Caring for ICU patients is a specialty that most nurses are not trained to take on.
If politics, funding, and/or expertise arenât the issues, what do you attribute the problems (the lack of testing kits, the mixed messaging, etc.) to?
This isnât political or partisan. If ANY leadership handled things this way, Iâd be finding fault.
Other countries are also being criticized for their handling of this crisis.
And, yes, there have been budget cuts the past few years.
Donât excuse actual facts away by claiming it is partisan. Everyone has a right to critique what is actually happening in a time when our country, its citizens, the world, and the economy are facing great challenges. We should be held up as an example given the resources at our disposal, instead we are seeing worldwide criticism for lack of planning and decision making.
