Coronavirus in the US

Sen. Ted Cruz in self quarantine after shaking the wrong hand at CPAC.

In interview Sunday morning:

Dr. Anthony Fauci: “here’s the deal, I can tell you right away Chris, no one over-ruled anybody about saying this…”

Maryland has tested 68 and has 5 confirmed. That seems like a very small amount tested, so I am pretty sure we are on our way to more cases. 4 of the confirmed cases are very close to where I teach. I have to be honest, I have several students with food insecurity, and some who are extremely close to eviction notices (or in temporary housing), I worry about this for them and their family. I think I am going to stock up-with canned goods/mac and cheese -for my students. I will second a few pages back, since there are a lot of people stocking up, I wonder about food banks! Don’t forget them!

**4 new presumptive positive cases of coronavirus reported in South Carolina
From CNN

Four new presumptive positive cases of coronavirus have been identified in South Carolina, according to the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.

This brings the state total to six. The two previous cases were announced on March 6.

Two of the new contacts – an elderly woman and man – were direct contacts, defined as close face-to face contact, with an elderly woman in Camden who was announced as a presumptive positive on March 6, the department said in a statement. The woman and who came in contact with the March 6 case are both isolated at this time.

The other two cases include a man from Camden with no known connection to the other cases. He was evaluated at a health care facility and is currently isolated at home, the release said.

The fourth new case is a man from Spartanburg County with no known connection to any other cases. He had recently traveled to Italy. He is not hospitalized and is currently isolated at home, the release said.

**Riverside County, California, announces first ‘locally acquired’ case of coronavirus

From CNN

Riverside County in Southern California has confirmed its first “locally acquired” case of coronavirus, according to a Riverside County Public Health Department press release.

The patient is currently being treated at Eisenhower Health in Rancho Mirage, the press release says.

“The patient is in isolation and Eisenhower staff have taken appropriate precautions in the treatment of this patient,” said an Eisenhower Health spokesperson.

Another Riverside County resident who tested positive with the virus was a former passenger on a cruise and is still recovering at a Northern California hospital.

“That individual has not returned to Riverside County since leaving the cruise ship,” the press release says.

The latest case brings the number of confirmed cases in California to 88.

**Second presumptive positive case of coronavirus identified in Clark County, Nevada

From CNN

A second presumptive positive case of coronavirus has been identified in Clark County, Nevada, according to Southern Nevada Health District spokeswoman Jennifer Sizemore.

The investigation is in the preliminary stage and more information on the case is expected Monday, Sizemore said in a statement.

This latest case brings the total in Nevada to four with two cases in Washoe County and two cases in Clark County, according to CNN’s count.

This is a broadly applicable statement. If you’re a government official being censored, the last thing you’re going to admit to is being censored especially when your job and potentially your safety is on the line.

I would place an ad like that : If you have to pack your medication pill box in the carry on, stop packing and enjoy your next 90 sunsets from you own porch.

"After days of advocating the federal gov’t to expand #Coronavirus testing capacity, we just received word that Northwell Laboratories has been authorized to test.

Manual testing of 75-80 samples/day will begin at Northwell immediately."

One new presumptive positive case of coronavirus identified in Broward County, Florida

One new presumptive positive case of coronavirus has been identified in Broward County, Florida, according to a tweet from the Florida Department of Health.

This is the third case in Broward County, bringing the state total to 13.

This is Hysteria. They interviewed the family in Westchester …the mother and both kids tested positive and they ONLY have a mild cough!!!

Which family? The initial family that was tested? If so, the husband is in critical condition in the hospital. Or one of the 80+ other people that contracted it in Westchester?

The virus presents from asymptomatic to killing approx. 2-3% of those who are infected. I hope you’ll read through the thread which includes a lot of informative info rather than just jumping in here with the comment you just made.

Do you think what is happening in China, Italy, Iran, and South Korea is hysteria?

And their father almost died …

The entire point of testing is protect those that are vulnerable.

Well, a middle school faculty member tested positive and all Scarsdale, NY (Westchester) schools are closed through March 18th in, as the release said, an abundance of caution.

Numbers are going to climb, areas who haven’t seen a case will… and then climb some more.

I’ve read most of the thread, and several others elsewhere, and come to the conclusion that there isn’t anything other to do than practice good hygiene. That, and stop pretending that there’s still a social function you have to make.

Market’s will go up on any positive news, such as indication that an anti-viral trial results in encouraging results.

Take a break from it, I intend to.

Exactly. I really wish more people would get this. Yes, it’s inconvenient to follow protocols to prevent the spread of this virus. It’s inconvenient to cancel travel plans and make an effort to reduce person to person contact. But there are others among us who are immunocompromised. It’s not hysteria to follow the news of how contagious this is --it’s just practical and compassionate. We know some will only experience mild symptoms, but others will not be so fortunate.

Grand Princess approves program for passengers to get fresh air and sunlight
From CNN

"A program to rotate guests to get some fresh air and sunlight on the Grand Princess cruise ship has been approved, Capt. John Harry Smith said in an announcement today.

They will prioritize passengers who are staying in the inside staterooms first, he added.

The first 405 medical prescriptions for passengers have been delivered and the next bath are being processed according to priority, the captain said.

“One guest was disembarked for medical reasons this morning on the boat that brought the medicine to the ship,” Smith said."

Let’s emphasize, again, as I know has been done already in this thread, that we need to practice social distancing to slow the spread of the virus.

We have a limited number of hospital beds, a limited number of ICU beds, a limited number of ventilators, a limited number of respiratory therapists. If those hardly-sick-at-all mother and kids in Westchester go out in public and infect other people by coughing on them, more people will end up on ventilators in ICUs and we could run out.

One infected person came to Washington, probably from Wuhan, and as a result of this person infecting other people, there’s a huge outbreak in Washington, 13 people are dead so far at Life Care, and one of the people infected as a result of this chain ended up infecting the Grand Princess. (We know this from analysis of the exact DNA of a bunch of infected people. It’s actually amazing detective work.) So, preventing ONE infection can prevent a lot of misery and death.

Perhaps this will wake up government to the seriousness of the situation.
