Coronavirus in the US

Vice President Pence says, "“In our line of work, you shake hands. I’ll continue to shake hands, the President will continue to shake hands.”

Have the rest of you stopped shaking hands? I stopped a week and a half ago. Some people suggest putting your hand over your heart and bowing a little. Some suggest the Live Long and Prosper gesture. What do you do?

I kind of wave at people. Sometimes we fist bunch. No one is shaking hands. We joke about it.

I had an appointment today with a new physician who apologized for not shaking hands when she met me. And I saw some people bumping elbows by way of greeting at the caucuses the other day. I doubt I’ll remember NOT to shake hands when the situation arises, alas. Creature of habit…

No hand shaking here!

271 Passengers are being brought to Dobbins AFB in GA tonight. They are supposed to arrive in 2 planes. There are, however, several local passengers who are reporting that they are still on the ship and don’t think they will arrive until Weds.

In this case it’s likely “state of emergencies” just means that certain things can be done easier than usual. For example, procurement regulations can be waived, free up money to be moved from one agency to another, etc., and the Governor can do certain things that normally would need legislative approval.

I listened to my husband’s side of the argument Saturday morning, that NYS shouldn’t issue one since the Governor was able to do most things without it and it just causes panic. He lost the argument - though the “state of emergency” declaration here didn’t go as far as it could have.

I have. We didn’t even elbow bump after we played tennis yesterday.

But I posted here what a dismal failure my family was at the Bat Mitzvah Saturday night. I was practically the only one not kissing and hugging - and one cousin said, “we can kiss, it’s just handshakes you can’t do.” SMH.

And these are all highly educated people!

But did more than one player pick up the tennis ball?

The virus event now has now given me worry on a second front; New Rochelle. I have family in Seattle and friends in New Rochelle, whom are very close to my heart and to my own family. My New Rochelle friends live in the containment area. That said, Governor Cuomo’s decision is remarkable and probably necessary.

so - if you get it, can you get it again? anyone know?

I am still going to play tennis but sanitize after handling the ball.

UCLA will suspend classes until April 10. Sports also.

I believe once you’ve been infected and recover, you acquire immunity but it remains to be seen how long the immunity lasts as with the flu. Researchers have observed tiny mutations in the test samples they’ve seen.

@emilybee Oh, he made that clear. This is a cool customer and not one prone to hyperbole. This state has relatively few (11 I believe) cases so far. Whatever it takes, I say.

We all washed our hands before playing and after we were done.

We didn’t sanitize our hands each time after handling a ball.

Today I went to yoga. My class is in my town hall. Since last Tuesday they installed hand sanitizing dispensers inside each doorway.

My class is in big gym so plenty of room for social distancing between our mats. It’s a 55yrs+ class and I’d say maybe 5 or so out of 35ish didn’t show.

After class I met a friend at our local coffee shop and it was practically empty. We meet every Tuesday afternoon and I’ve never seen it empty like that.

UcSB going to online instruction…
Listened to Gavin Newsom this afternoon. I thought it was very informative. One thing he stated was number of available tests is not really accurate picture of the ability to test. That tests available are not complete tests, he compared them to a printer with no ink. The tests don’t contain the needed components to process the tests and also the need to have trained personal to process the tests.
My D said Kaiser in Northern Ca sent a message that visits should whenever possible be via telephone or email instead of in person visits. She went in for a injection that had to be done on site. She said hand sanitizer at the door and they asked if you had any viral I’ll rss symptoms and if so to wear a mask.

I had surgery today and when we were signing the releases the surgeon wiped the pen extremely thoroughly with a hospital grade antibacterial wipe then handed it to me to sign. After I signed he chucked the pen. It made me feel good about their protocols.

That’s aside from all the other expected safety measures.

According to some limited data that came out of China and Japan, it’s a possibility for a cured patient to be re-infected, probably because there’re more than one strain of the virus.

Did anyone ask him about Sacramento’s decision on self-quarantine (which cc consensus appears to disagree with)?

We may live in the hugging and kissing epicenter of the universe. A couple of weeks ago I began stopping about 5 ft from whomever I was meeting, and blowing a kiss. Everyone got the message. Of course, I only get together with friends lately.

Right now I’m staying home. If neighbors drop by, (which will happen) I’m blowing a kiss, staying 5 feet away, and excusing myself by explaining I’m self-quarantining in case my grandchildren need childcare. And I’m going to wipe the door knobs when they leave.

I’m not concerned about virus transmission from my neighbors yet. They do not leave our county, rarely do they travel more than 15 miles from home. I’m much more dangerous to them than they are to me. But I haven’t been on a plane three weeks and five days, and not displaying any symptoms.
