Coronavirus in the US

It looks as though Ohio State has more than 6,000 international students, including almost 4,000 undergraduate students. For these students and others, leaving campus may not be practical or possible. Even with respect to students who stay on campus voluntarily, at least the school will know where they are - the Columbus area has no confirmed cases as yet so appears to be relatively safe. I think the schools are all doing the best they can, and stopping the in-person classes at least facilitates some social distancing. We are not an OSU family, but my son is a first-year at Denison, a half hour away, which has now also announced a move to online classes. Denison is requiring that all students who can go home vacate the campus but I am grateful for the accommodations they are making for those like my son who cannot, and I think this has made me aware of how the schools must be struggling with these decisions.

Even the tax code doesn’t assume a lap top is required for all students. Only at schools that specifically requires a computer can the family take the laptop as a QEE (for the AOTC). Maybe THIS will prove that every college student needs a computer?

When my kids were starting, I called D#2’s school (she was in engineering) and asked dozens of people what the school’s policy was. All were shocked that I even questioned her needed a laptop, but when i asked them to show me where it was in the policies, they couldn’t. I finally justified it (to myself, and I was not audited) that several of her classes required purchasing a ‘code’ for homework and quizzes, and to make that code work you needed a computer.

I am glad that employers are mandating those feeling ill should stay home.

Hopefully it will become the new normal versus proving how committed you are by coming in sick or any potential stigma attached in some work place situations for those calling in sick.

@sorghum

I would never subject my students to writing a paper on a phone. Or even long responses. As a humanities person, that’s a problem.

Italy went from zero cases to total lockdown in less than three weeks. I am NOT panicking. I am completely terrified, and it is BASED ON DATA.

Cancel EVERYTHING.

It may be up-thread somewhere but
are there any numbers as to which countries are, and have been, doing intensive testing? Orders of magnitude greater than the US?

South Korea, I know, but

The state can say whatever they want to insurarance companies - but most insurance plans are “self insured” meaning they don’t have to follow ** state ** laws. Keep that in mind folks. Check your plans anytime you see something that is ‘state mandated’ (speaking from experience here).

Don’t we have a national stockpile for these types of things?

@tkparent
everyone is on spring break now and everyone will be coming back from all over the place
School resumes on Monday. For sure not an easy decision, but the right thing would have been to not open the dorms unless you are an international student or someone with specific situations. I guess we will see how it plays out. This online thing only protects staff members and professors.

I highly doubt that. Maybe we will

Wow this thread is moving fast! Need to go back and read the posts aI missed. Lots of them.

@sherimba03 It will be ok. I posted a recap of a call I was on with one of the foremost virologists in the world from Yale today. There is good reason to be cautious and aware. Absolutely no reason to be terrified. Based on the data he studies at the highest levels. There are many more things that are much more dangerous you do everyday.

I hope you can find some peace until this all settles down.

Tomorrow, Governor Inslee will announce a ban of gatherings of more than 250 people in three counties, including King and Snohomish. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/politics/gov-inslee-to-restrict-gatherings-of-more-than-250-people-including-sports-and-concerts/

So glad that the state is doing everything within their power to slow the spread but so very sorry for our son - no spring festivals.

Great read, thanks. Although I don’t know the physicians/scientists in the article, not surprised they tried to push ahead given the public health consequences. A friend just shot me a note that CNN is covering this story right now as well.

It’s still Italy. An Italian lockdown and a Chinese lockdown are two very different things.

Obviously not. The leaders in charge admitted they only had 1% of needed masks in the national stockpile. We’ve all been fed a bunch of lies assuming our country is prepared for such things and watching out for the populace.

I’ve heard mask manufacturers are trying to Congress to approve a short term release on industrial level protected masks. These are very effective for protection against airborne and droplet based issues which are the perceived transmission method for covid 19. The companies have a lot of them but they want legal protections from lawsuits for using outside of their approved usage. That could help a bit.

Michigan just announced its first coronavirus cases. Georgia is now up to 22 and Florida 23
From CNN

Michigan officials have announced the state has confirmed it’s first two presumptive positive coronavirus cases. Authorities there have now declared a state of emergency.

New cases in Florida and Georgia: Health authorities in Florida and Georgia also announced new coronavirus cases Tuesday night.

The Florida Department of Health said there are eight new patients in the state, all of whom "are being appropriately cared for and isolated.”

Florida has now identified 23 patients and recorded two deaths in the state.

Georgia, meanwhile, identified five new presumptive positive cases. One is in south Georgia’s Charlton County and four are in the greater Atlanta area – three in Cobb County and one in Fulton County.

The Georgia Department of Health said that “all but one individual (the one in Fulton) are hospitalized. One of the Cobb presumptive positives has a travel history outside of the country, the sources of the other infections are unknown.”

Quarantine for Tenerife hotel ends
The quarantine period at the Costa Adeje Hotel in Tenerife, which was put on lockdown last month after an Italian guest tested positive for coronavirus, has come to an end.

In a statement the hotel said the quarantine period had come to an end “without any more cases having occurred within the establishment, apart from those of the risk group from Italy.”

The hotel said after the facilities have been deep cleaned and disinfected business will return to normal.

US officials try to dispel rumours about limited testing

U.S. Health Secretary Alex Azar has tried to stem fears that the country’s capability for testing people for coronavirus is limited, making it hard to know how far the deadly infection has spread.

“We have always been able to meet the full demand for test orders from public health officials,” he said at Hatch Center conference on pharmaceuticals.

“At no point has a request for a test from a state or local health department been denied.” (Telegraph)

This is the problem. Michigan has 2 cases and now they have a state of emergency
Don’t you think that spooks the residents? Yes, I understand it’s a resource /money play for federal help and resources but don’t think people get it. Their shelves were bare when I left there yesterday. Can’t imagine whats going to happen now
