Coronavirus in the US

This new one is more credible based on those involved in the research. Moreover the old study with the 9 day timeline looked at other coronaviruses, not the COVID-19 virus, i.e. SARS-CoV-2 (previously referred to as 2019-nCoV).

Good to know. The 9 days on cardboard was a pretty scary duration. Having 24 hours is more reasonable.

We need to come together to support our neighbors and communities. H and I have discussed that we will forego rent for our tenants if they have income issues. We can’t afford this indefinitely, but we can for a couple of months and it’s likely we can afford it more than they can. We’re still going to send checks to our church even if we can’t attend. We will probably also continue some sort of support for the local restaurants we frequent even if we can’t eat there.

We’re also not selling our stocks out of fear even though they may stay down for a long time and we’re investing in some that are trying for cures.

We can’t save the world or even all of our community, but we can try to help some. If everyone could do that - act like a true village - it would do wonders.

ps Meanwhile I bought some seeds and plants for our garden today while I’m totally healthy and as far as I know, it’s not in our area. If it comes to it, produce from our farm will also be shared around us rather than sold.

That’s really nice of you to forego the rent for your tenant if needed, @Creekland

I can totally tell you that checking is NOT going on at airports.

If we had better testing available, we could do tests on a lot more people. I truly believe the lack of testing ability is creating undue risks of exposure in the USA.

IMO the dad should be quarantining unless he is isolated from his daughter.

Houston Rodeo cancelled. It gets one million visitors a year. The reason? Community spread case in Montgomery County.

Lackland AFB gets 380 new evacuees, not the 100 initially discussed. Basic training graduation ceremonies for families also cancelled at Lackland.

I saw Arkansas got its first presumptive case in Pine Bluff.

San Francisco bans large group gatherings
From CNN

San Francisco is halting all large group gatherings in an effort to slow the spread of novel coronavirus, Mayor London Breed announced.

Group events of 1,000 or more people will be prohibited for now.

“We know cancelling these events is a challenge for everyone and we’ve been talking with venues and event organizers about the need to protect public health,” Breed said in a statement. The order will be in place for two weeks and will be revisited as the coronavirus outbreak in the city continues to evolve.

Nice to see companies doing this

Starbucks to offer catastrophe pay and mental health support to employees exposed to coronavirus
From CNN

Starbucks announced today that it will offer any employee diagnosed or exposed to COVID-19 up to 14 days of catastrophe pay.

“I want you to know that here at Starbucks, you should never have to choose between work and taking care of yourself,” Rossann Williams, president of Starbucks US, wrote in a message to employees.
The catastrophe pay is an additional measure on top of sick pay and time off. If Starbucks employees are still unable to work after two weeks, they can access additional pay up to 26 weeks.

Starbucks is also offering employees mental health resources, such as access to free counseling and a meditation app.

Possibly but I would also imagine that the WHO needs to use that designation cautiously - not crying wolf and all for the next time.

From the get go, the WHO has been VERY clear in its messaging to take this seriously and to take necessary actions.

I think we need to see more live coverage of people hospitalized with this disease, and interviews with doctors on the front lines in Italy and elsewhere. We need a moment as with the Vietnam war in which the reality of the situation is brought to everyone’s living room.

Our local Nextdoor discussions are filled with rants from people who believe this is all one big conspiracy to bring down the sitting president. The overwhelming belief is that ‘this is just the flu’. The outcry from people disappointed by the cancellation of festivals and other events overwhelms the voices of people who are genuinely concerned. Politicians and other public figures are delaying tough decisions because they don’t want to take the heat.

Guatemala bans Europeans

Guatemalan health minister Hugo Monroy said on Wednesday that the country will ban the entry of European citizens in an attempt to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The Central American country, which has yet to confirm any cases of the virus, will block the entry of Europeans starting tomorrow, Monroy told a news conference.

The country’s director of civil aviation will communicate the ban to airlines, Monroy added, underlining that it applied to citizens from across Europe.
“This is done simply to prevent the introduction of the coronavirus to our country,” Monroy said. (Guardian)

‘No testing on arrival from Milan’
Mattha Busby

"Alberto Volpe, a 33-year-old, was feverish when he flew from Milan to Gatwick on Sunday after being forced to return home from a skiing holiday in Chamonix due to an injury to his girlfriend.

He said:

The captain informed the port authorities that people with the coronavirus may have been on board as the cabin crew reported a few people coughing, so we waited an hour and a half before disembarking but no-one came on board to check us.

I find it crazy no-one checked us. It was just like any other flight. In Italy, everyone is having their temperature measured. It is not happening in the UK and, most importantly, not on a flight containing people coming from the now quarantined areas. How else can you contain any possible risk? Its bizarre.

We took the train home to Brighton and I measured my body temperature which was 37.5 degrees and I started having diarrhoea. We rang 111 and explained where we had been and were told we should be in quarantine. They gave us the option of driving to a tent for testing or waiting for someone to call us within 48 hours to arrange a home test. But more than two days later and we were not contacted.

We rang them again this morning and they literally word for word said the same things. I’m sure I will be fine but I can’t understand why it takes so long to test someone who has a fever and has been in the area."

Perhaps a side effect of this whole thing is that it will become harder for small businesses to attract employees, since a big business is more likely to have to resources and the need to preserve public image to do these kinds of things for employees, versus a small business that will probably just go out of business under a similar kind of financial stress.

San Francisco Giants cancel March 24 game

The San Francisco Giants announce it’s canceling their preseason exhibition game against the Oakland Athletics at Oracle Park on March 24 due to a ban on large gatherings in the city and county.

The Giants are scheduled to start the regular season on the road and aren’t slated to host their first regular season game until April 3.

Here’s the team’s statement:

“We have been in close coordination with Major League Baseball and our local health and government agencies to monitor and plan for any potential impacts of COVID-19. In light of the City and County San Francisco’s announcement today to prohibit public gatherings of 1,000 people for the next two weeks, we will not play our upcoming March 24th exhibition game against the Oakland A’s at Oracle Park in San Francisco. We have no other large public gatherings scheduled at Oracle Park during this time period. We are in the process of working with Major League Baseball and the A’s to finalize alternative arrangements. We will make that information available as soon as possible.”

Can we just take a win here? Glass half empty or glass half full?

Susquehanna is extending spring break by a week. And you know that means that classes will be canceled or held online after that. The senior art students are being told they’ll get automatic A’s for their projects but D is still very upset.

Now she is trying to decide whether to make the 500-mile trip back to Maine or stay in PA. So all those kids who are making long trips home and then back again to collect their stuff, aren’t they put at more risk from highway driving than the virus?

Off to send D a little cash so she can go out to eat (or is that allowed anymore?). Ack.

Not if hiring dries up. Then any job will be up for grabs.

MAINE: 42 negative tests. 0 positive tests. As of noon 3/11/2020.

As I expected, Berklee is closing down in favor of online classes after spring break (which starts Friday). My son and his friends are scrambling to get stuff packed or stored before they leave, since they just learned about it this morning (although I’d suggested he be prepared for it a few days ago). I’m glad. It seems that it should just be a universal policy for colleges for the time-being, rather than each one eventually coming up with its own approach.
Fortunately, Berklee does a LOT of online teaching, so I think they should be able to handle it pretty well, although in-person instrumental instruction is no doubt preferable. And my son was wondering how they will teach conducting online.

Ohio has another confirmed case. Now up to 4.
