The payroll tax break was enthusiastically supported by the previous legislators and administration. It puts money in the packet of citizens directly and the millions of small businesses as well.
There’s lots of things that can be done. And some very sophisticated fiscal policy at the fed level (not monetary policy) that’s too long and complex to discuss here. But lots tools left in the kit.
I also think the emptied state colleges may offer a creative solution for non critical care and observation type hospitalization facilities. Nurses running the show.
Yeah - sorry - I fixed it. I was saying that we will be like Italy in 7 days. Coronavirus is community spreading here - the foreign source is no longer the major source.
Classes at CUNY and SUNY will mostly be held online.
“New York’s state and city public university systems, which have a combined enrollment of over 900,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs across dozens of campuses, will conduct most classes online starting March 19, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said on Wednesday.
The State University of New York system has more than 60 campuses, while the City University of New York system has about 20 colleges and community colleges in New York City, including Brooklyn College, City College, Queens College, and Hunter College.
Neither system will cancel all in-person classes. Laboratory courses could continue to be held, although potentially with fewer students.
Some dormitories will probably remain open for students who cannot return home for hardship reasons.
“They are not evicting anyone,” Mr. Cuomo said at a news conference. “They are not closing the dorm and kicking you out.”
The purpose of the move was to “reduce density,” the governor said.
Some SUNY and CUNY graduation ceremonies will probably “not be happening in person” this spring, said Melissa DeRosa, a top aide to the governor.
The decision to shift most public university classes in New York online followed similar moves by most major private universities in the state this week. However, private universities like Columbia and New York University have not said the suspension of in-person classes would last through the rest of the spring semester, which typically ends in May.
SUNY’s student government body, the Student Assembly, released a statement on Wednesday saying students “appreciate” Mr. Cuomo’s decision.”
Some countries - India and Kuwait - have banned anyone from coming in. Many have speculated that India did the worldwide ban because they didn’t want to add the US to just some dozen or so countries and piss off our administration.
Note - there were discussions from Trump about helping the airlines and the cruise industry. The cruise industry does not pay $1 in federal taxes since they are legally incorporated in low/no tax countries. Royal Caribbean - Liberia. Carnival - Panama.
They just showed a newsclip of the Canton, GA Waffle House employee (who only worked at the waffle house briefly, perhaps only one shift and not in many days, also drives for a bus service, possibly a special needs bus service?? Couldn’t quite catch that part of the report ). He is the first to be quarantined in a trailer at the state park (his roommates are expecting a baby so he moved to the trailer) and it looks very brand new and quite plush!! Sure, his employment may sound stereotypic, but he is being taken care of well.
It may be true, possibly, that most of our current identified cases come from Italy, Iran or cruise ships, because those are the people we’ve been testing. But it is indisputably true that most of our actual current cases don’t come from abroad. We’ve had the virus in our country since January. The cases double every week.
As someone pointed out on Twitter, this proposed travel ban reminds me of a horror movie where the dad says, “Don’t worry, I’ve locked all the doors.” It’s in the house! (Cue scary music)
So Michigan canceled classes Thursday and Friday and going online starting Monday. My son’s conference on Augmented Reality is sorta canceled (April 5 th), since they can have less then 100 people in a room. They are working on putting it on virtually and streaming it. They have sponsors like Ford and Microsoft plus a host of smaller companies and rather not lose the funding for it. Plus shows creative thinking for those internships he’s applying to ?.
Beloit College (not sure if I posted it her). Taking a week off to try to figure out how to hold classes online.
My daughter graduates this year later May… Hope they can still hold commencement
True. It’s in the house, but travel is making it worse and speeding up the spread. A woman attending a conference on “Women of Power” at the Mirage hotel in Las Vegas has tested positive. She came in from New York.
Companies aren’t things. They are human beings behind the scenes.
Let’s see how this play out. Government can’t solve all of our problems and bubble wrap the country. Covid was only named in January. 12 weeks ago.
We seem to want immediate solutions. I would as well it it’d not realistic. Lots of people will get this and very few as a percentage will die. Every death is sad but some of the reactions are going cause trickle down problems for years to come if we don’t slow down and calm down.
Please dont secretly wish for a bad economy or people to blame for a bat virus and nature itself.
We really need to banding together and show some American style grit and resolve right now.
We can be critical of course. But let’s put certain things aside right now for the good of country and futures.
Even yesterday, there were no checks on arrivals from “hot spot” countries in at least some US airports. That might have been a good step to take. Kind of late now but better late than never. Borders could be tightened before completely shutting down.
I feel for so many places and people effected; but I especially feel sad for all of the big nonprofits holding fundraisers around now. Heard about a childrens cancer fundraiser being cancelled on a nationally syndicated radio talk show. It’ll be hard to recoup those funds for those groups I bet.
^^^ If we’re restricting international air traffic, the next step should be restricting domestic. (But can we wait until Saturday, to allow my son to return from his business trip?)
I have read multiple places and been told at a staff meeting that our governor says about 60-70% of us will get it. I keep reading 80% will be hospitalized. That’s a lot of people.
