Coronavirus in the US

Cramer slams government, evoking his epic 2007 Fed rant
CNBC

CNBC’s Jim Cramer blasted the U.S. government’s response to the coronavirus, arguing “this is the time for radical action.”

“They know nothing. They know nothing. We know more than they do, and that’s not acceptable either,” Cramer said, hearkening back to his famous 2007 rant about the Federal Reserve before the financial crisis.

“I want the federal government to know more than me. I knew more than they did in 2007, and I know more than they do now and it is disappointing,” he said on “Squawk on the Street.”

NYC closes two schools for deep cleaning

New York City has closed two Bronx schools for 24 hours due to a “self-confirmed” case of COVID-19 in a student, Mayor Bill de Blasio said. The two schools are the Laboratory School of Finance and Technology and South Bronx Preparatory. The Department of Education will disinfect the buildings.

“We don’t make this decision lightly, and we know the disruption and anxiety this means for students, faculty and parents,” de Blasio said in a statement. “We are taking every precaution to keep people safe, and we will keep everyone informed as we learn more through the day.” (CNBC)

JPMorgan Chase orders up to half NY metro employees to work from home

JPMorgan Chase on Thursday told managers to implement a plan to have employees based in offices in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Jersey City to start working from home in shifts beginning on Friday.

“We are asking our managers to arrange for no fewer than 25% and no greater than 50% of their team members who can effectively work from home, to begin doing so by the end of this week,” according to a memo obtained by CNBC, which was sent to staff Thursday morning. (CNBC)

Can anyone share what a family does if one member begins to show symptoms?
I know this sounds simplistic and maybe has been discussed many times, but I am not clear what we would do - other than initially panic?

NHL plans to suspend season
The National Hockey League is expected to suspended its 2019-2020 regular season due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus, a person with knowledge of the situation told CNBC.

The person asked not to be identified as the league has not made an official announcement, which is expected later Thursday. The NHL did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Senate will cancel next week’s recess as Congress works to pass response plan
The Senate will cancel its recess planned for next week as Congress tries to pass a plan to respond to the economic effects of the coronavirus outbreak, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Thursday.

“Notwithstanding the scheduled state work period, the Senate will be in session next week,” the Kentucky Republican said in a tweet. “I am glad talks are ongoing between the Administration and Speaker Pelosi. I hope Congress can pass bipartisan legislation to continue combating the coronavirus and keep our economy strong.”

I posted this on the other thread, but thought it could be helpful good news here too.

Med school lad told us his area is seeing far fewer cases of the flu now and speculation is going around that it could be due to less traveling and people adopting better health habits.

Essentially, what is hopefully “good” for Covid-19 is also good for slowing down the flu if their speculation is correct.

Try to quarantine them as much as possible - in their own room. It really depends on if its adult or not. Sleep and keep in contact (via phone) for symptoms and if respiratory issues call your primary care doctor.

The UK government has updated its coronavirus advice, following the latest emergency meeting of ministers and their advisers this afternoon. Here are the key points.

if you have symptoms of coronavirus infection (COVID-19), however mild, stay at home and do not leave your house for 7 days from when your symptoms started. (See Ending Isolation section below for more information)

this action will help protect others in your community whilst you are infectious.

plan ahead and ask others for help to ensure that you can successfully stay at home.

ask your employer, friends and family to help you to get the things you need to stay at home.

stay at least 2 metres (about 3 steps) away from other people in your home whenever possible

sleep alone, if that is possible.

wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, each time using soap and water.

stay away from vulnerable individuals such as the elderly and those with underlying health conditions as much as possible.

you do not need to call NHS111 to go into self-isolation. If your symptoms worsen during home isolation or are no better after 7 days contact NHS 111 online. If you have no internet access, you should call NHS 111. For a medical emergency dial 999.

One of the moderators for the DNC debate this weekend has stepped down due to exposure to COVID-19.

University of Texas infectious disease doctors put out a paper about how America should prepare. It’s only available as a PDF but easy to get at the link below. It’s called: “The Art of War” in the Era of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

https://academic.oup.com/cid/advance-article/doi/10.1093/cid/ciaa229/5800048

The paper details four major ways to mobilize. I would recommend the whole article, but because my husband and many friends are on the front lines in our hospitals, I’m going to quote the third one. Note: “nosocomial transmission” means an infection acquired in the hospital. (I didn’t know that term until coronavirus!)

Reports from the Italian doctors in Lombardy are heartbreaking, and I hope hospitals here are taking action now to prevent that situation. DH did run into a turf battle with certain hospital employee MD’s trying to bar private MD’s (who have hospital privileges) from future care of COVID-19 patients. DH got a lot of people together to convince them that they will not be able to maintain a high standard of care if they try to do this without help.

Florida Sen. Rick Scott will self-quarantine after potential contact with infected Brazilian official

Sen. Rick Scott, a Florida Republican, said Thursday he would self-quarantine after potentially coming into contact with a Brazilian government aide who tested positive for coronavirus.

“My office was alerted today by the Brazilian Embassy that a member of President Bolsonaro’s delegation tested positive for Coronavirus. On Monday, I met with the President in Miami, and while I do not believe I interacted with the infected person, that individual was in the same room as me. The Embassy said the person had no symptoms leading up to or the day of the conference,” Scott said in a statement.
He said that while doctors told him his risk was low and that he didn’t need to take a test nor quarantine, he would do so out of an abundance of caution. (CNN)

NASCAR will race without fans
From CNN

NASCAR has announced that races will go on as planned but without fans.

The series is racing at the Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend.

“At this time, NASCAR will hold its race events at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway without fans in attendance. These events will be restricted to competitors, crews, officials and other necessary personnel to conduct the race. We will work with public health officials as we determine future scheduling beyond these events,” NASCAR said in a statement.

Thanks for being patient. Emotions are getting to people - lets all stick to facts not opinion on this. I find this thread incredibly informative and hope it stays open.

Maybe it should be referred to as a Quarantine instead of Timeout.

Fed to inject 1.5 Trillion into short term funding markets to prevent funding freeze.
““These changes are being made to address highly unusual disruptions in Treasury financing markets associated with the coronavirus outbreak,” the New York Fed said in a statement.”

Many Americans also live in areas of lesser density than in Europe… that could be holding down our numbers.

I heard someone on a podcast - previous chief of staff for VP Biden and others during the Ebola scare. “There are NO states with no cases. There are only states that haven’t tested enough yet”.{/quote]

This was Ron Klain, the Ebola czar in the Obama administration, who coordinated all agencies and all branches of government to deal with Ebola. His position (a position I wish was filled for covid19) was managerial, as his expertise (as former chief of staff to VP Biden) is managerial. People who worked for him say he was thorough and demanding, having his employees do things like write Plans B, C and D for unlikely but bad possibilities before they happened.

When Ron Klain talks about what government could and should be doing, he is speaking from a position of intimate government knowledge.

Do you remember who the moderators were? These debates all blended together for me.

Some courts are closing, restricting visitors and making other modifications to business as usual.

I much prefer this map - I don’t need the fancy graphics. This shows the change from one day to the next, which is informative.

Per Twitter - a writer for ESPN states that the MLB owners have agreed to suspend spring training. The start of the regular season will likely be delayed as well.

Why would you panic?

Your post history indicates you seem to be experiencing high levels of anxiety. What exactly are you afraid of?

@suzyQ7 the one affected is “Univision anchor Jorge Ramos” (according to a quick google search). He’ll be replaced by another Univision anchor.

Not sure who else is moderating. It’s the one on Saturday.
