Coronavirus in the US

I early voted today. There were Purell stations that everyone was using before and after voting.

I’ve been wondering about Disney - they have been awfully quiet about this. Disney parks by far are the largest crowd of any place in the world - it’s probably the virus’s happiest place because of so many available hosts! If any place needs to be shut down immediately, it’s Disney! I would even say that it’s criminal not to.

Walt Disney Hall has canceled its concerts. But I don’t think it is owned by the Disney Corporation.

The Getty and the Huntington are still open. I checked this morning. I’m already getting cabin fever.

New York State currently has 328 confirmed cases of #Coronavirus.

Westchester: 148
NYC: 95
Nassau: 41
Suffolk: 20
Rockland: 7
Ulster: 4
Saratoga: 3
Albany: 2
Monroe: 2
Orange: 2
Broome: 1
Delaware: 1
Dutchess: 1
Herkimer: 1

If I got it correctly from listening to the press conference, NY has tested 2314 people so far. There are now cases in counties that were case free only yesterday.

It is not. It’s just named after Disney bcos one of the family members donated $50m to help get it built.

Fully agree. None of those should remain open.
It took NY way too long to close Broadway, but they finally did it today.

Just received an email from the Hilton Hotels:

"Existing Reservations. All reservations – even those described as “non-cancellable” (“Advanced Purchase”) – that are scheduled for arrival before April 30, 2020, can be changed or cancelled at no charge up to 24 hours before your scheduled arrival.

New Reservations. Any reservation you make – even those described as “non-cancellable” (“Advanced Purchase”) – that are booked between today and April 30, 2020, for any future arrival date, can be changed or cancelled at no charge up to 24 hours before your scheduled arrival.

We will pause the expiration of all points scheduled to expire between now and May 31, 2020"

I came in here yesterday and I posted about the economic effect this is going to have is unmeasurable to our many communities. As secondary as these sporting events, festivals, and conventions are in comparison to the reality that we are facing, the economic results are going to add to up to incredible losses to our communities. The trickle-down effect goes from the largest hotel chains to the smallest businesses and low-income employees. The market crash is now hitting just about everybody as well. Now, some of these colleges choices might take a back seat due to affordability issues

Large-scale concerts and events postponed through the end of March
From CNN

Live entertainment organizers are collectively postponing concerts and other events through the end of March. This includes concerts presented by Live Nation, AEG and talent agency Elite.

A task force with representatives from the top executives managing the events and the star performers is working to ensure a unified response to the coronavirus outbreak, according to a statement from Live Nation.

“At this time, we collectively recommend large scale events through the end of March be postponed,” the statement said. “We continue to support that small scale events follow guidance set by their local government officials. We feel fortunate to have the flexibility to reschedule concerts, festivals, and live events as needed, and look forward to connecting fans with all their favorite artists and live entertainment soon.”

Katie Porter is my hero. She just got the head of CDC to agree to allow free testing for covid19, even for the uninsured.

Drive-up line at coronavirus testing lab will be cut off due to high volume
From CNN

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is working to establish and communicate a cut-off point for the line at the drive-up testing site in Lowry, due to the high volume of people looking to be tested for novel coronavirus.

According to a department statement, CDPHE is currently determining, based on resources and staff capacity, which vehicle will be the last one and whose occupants can be served Thursday.

Those who are already in line behind the cut off-point will get priority for testing Friday, according to the department.

How it works: South Korea has also used drive-through coronavirus testing stations. In the northern city of Goyang, drivers pull in to a parking lot where they are met by health workers dressed in hazmat suits. Motorists then drive to several stations where nurses in protective plastic suits, masks and face shields register drivers, check their temperatures, and use swabs to take samples from their throats and nasal passages.

[In many places utilizing drive-ups, you still have to have a doctor’s request for testing]

The French President Emmanuel Macron is giving a live address from the ElysĂ©e Palace where he has described the coronavirus outbreak as “the most serious health crisis France had faced in a century”. This is the first time he has addressed the French on the outbreak.

He announced the closure of all the country’s creches, schools, colleges and universities as part of “strong measures” to address an expected acceleration in the number of people with the coronavirus and prepare for a second wave at a later date.

Macron called on those aged over 70 and with underlying health conditions to limit their contact with the outside world and remain at home as much as possible. Protecting the weakest was a priority, he said.

He also praised the “sang froid” of the French population. “You haven’t given in to anger or panic
you have slowed the spread of the virus and allowed our health staff and hospitals to prepare. That is what a great nation is.”

“We are only at the beginning of the epidemic and the spread of the virus is accelerating
we have to have confidence in science, to listen to those who know. We have in France the best virulogues and epidemiologists and clinicians
we have said despite our efforts to stop it the virus continues to spread and spread faster,” he said.

The second priority was to slow the spread of the virus. Non-urgent hospital procedures will be postponed. “We will mobilise all financial means necessary to save lives, however much it costs,” he said.

President Macron also gave the French people an “economic guarantee” that those who have to self isolate will continue to be paid, including independent workers.

“I know you have legitimate worries about your jobs, your businesses,” he said, promising to protect businesses and staff “whatever it costs”.

He added that Europe had to act together during the crisis. “Europe will react in a huge organised manner to protect its economy. We also have to organise international level.”

“Today we have to avoid two pitfalls
nationalism. This virus has no passport. We have to join forces, coordinate our responses, cooperate. European cooperation is essential.

“The other pitfall is to take an individualist approach. It is by being united and saying “us” and not “I” that we will bounce back. I am counting on you to invent during this period new sense of solidarity.” (Guardian)

The statement made no mention of when flights may resume.

News I hadn’t read before—this virus can cause male fertility problems, like SARS.

https://apple.news/AxoyhGFXwTguLeep-LJWo2g

Elementary and secondary schools in Ontario will close for 2 weeks following March Break. Next week is March break so that means 3 weeks. No word yet on universities but imagine they will be making statements soon.

Please read the link. The issue is inconclusive.

“While there was no evidence to suggest the infection could damage the male reproductive system, it was theoretically possible as the coronavirus was genetically similar to the one that caused Sars (severe acute respiratory syndrome)” and more. Just don’t want this to be misconstrued or cause panic.

New York City declares a state of emergency because of coronavirus
From CNN’s Sheena Jones

New York City has declared a state of emergency due to the coronavirus outbreak, Mayor Bill de Blasio said moments ago at a news conference.

“The last 24-hours have been very very sobering,” de Blasio said.
