I’ve spent part of the last two days at the ER with my son (he will be there awhile since there are no psych beds available in our town - it’s a travesty). The people doing the valet parking are wearing masks. I didn’t see anyone else wearing them. There is a sign on the front door of the ER that if you’ve been to China in the past 21 days you need to put on a mask and notify a nurse immediately.
Every year during flu season my kids’ pediatrician’s office has had masks outside the door to the check in/waiting room with a sign asking people to put them on before entering if they’re sick. I think it only makes sense since they don’t have a separate entrance and waiting room for sick patients the way some offices do.
The silver lining in all this is that we may see a drop in season flu cases because people are so freaked out by the coronavirus that they’re taking the precautions they should be anyway during cold and flu season.
I assume its been reported here that the doctor in China who first reported the corona virus has died of the disease https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/chinese-doctor-who-tried-to-raise-alarm-on-coronavirus-in-wuhan-dies-on-front-line-of-medical-fight/ar-BBZIU2U
^Yes. A few pages back and people got admonished for spreading rumors.
Chinese are buying soybean. No changes due to the virus. They have to eat sick or not. They may need basic food more now.

@igloo- thats terrible about posters being admonished for “spreading rumors”. Its on the national news now…
Nobody was admonished about anything about that doctor.
I first reported it as it was out there. Another poster and I corrected it because it turns out that he wasn’t quite dead yet, supposedly, then he supposedly did die. News reports were conflicting. Where was the admonishment?
Daily tallies
Deaths in China today 73 with 69 in Hubei province. Total deaths in China 636, total deaths worldwide 638.
Newly confirmed cases in China rose by 3,143, a second consecutive daily drop, bringing the total to 28,985 cases in the country. Worldwide cases are 31,546, give or take depending on the source.
At the time, NYT reported that he was still alive. So yes, people said that it was premature to report his death, but there was no scolding of anyone for reporting “rumors.”
The only rumors that I have seen here were about thousands of dead being cremated day and night. Shaking my head about that one.
Does anyone know what is going on with the virus in Africa? I’ve seen very little in the news, just that WHO was sending some testing kits to a few African countries and that quite a few African students in China were stranded. With the increased involvement of China in African countries and sub optimal health care in many African countries, aren’t these countries most at risk. I know that no official cases have been reported in Africa but is that simply due to lack of testing?
I have seen very little in the news on Africa other than the WHO concern and help given the lack of robust health care systems (I worry about Latin America on that front as well). WHO stated that their decision to declare it an International Emergency was done in part to get the resources needed to Africa. It is unclear as to whether the lack of cases in both areas is due to good fortune or lack of adequate monitoring.
Well, it seems the testing may be negative for the first or second test of a person and then the next test may be positive. There are also at least 6 different test kits in China, some of which can give results faster while others are slower. I’m not sure how fast or accurate the CDC test kits are. Was reading in our paper our state is finally getting some test kits so they don’t have to wait weeks for results from Atlanta.
Japan has 41 more Cruise passengers who tested positive for 2019-nCoV, bring their country total to 86!
Wowzers! Sure is spreadable in the tight quarters of a cruise ship!
Those 41 are reported to be out of 171 of the test results that were pending, so 24% of that batch!
21 from Japan, 8 from the US, 5 from Australia, 5 from Canada, 1 from Argentina and 1 from Britain. Reports say none are exhibiting serious symptoms.
D was thinking a cruise would be fun but I think I’m avoiding ships for the next few months. Yikes! Who knows if others may have gotten the “regular flu” or colds from one another as well. Hope the crew stays healthy and doesn’t infect anyone.

61 now(wapo)

The latest test results, from the remaining 171 people who were tested for the virus, mean that 61 people have tested positive for the virus, according to Japan’s Health Minister, Katsunobu Kato. <<

The previous 20 were out of a larger batch. Just went back to look up that number which is 273. So 61 total out of 273 total tested is 22.3%
The additional 41 cases confirmed today were out of the remaining 171 of the 273 batch tested.
I wonder if they will test the rest? And how much time will that take? Supposedly, these 273 had the most interaction with the initial case.
The boat group is really an interesting case study for sure. I assume they are only testing people who are symptomatic. I am more interested in the results of the other passengers.
I’m wondering what kind of precautions the cruise crew members are taking, who are cooking and delivering food to the passengers. If someone is ill, and they handle the things being delivered to the cabins, potentially getting small amounts of saliva on it, can they effectively infect large numbers of passengers?
Those crew don’t have the luxury of quarantine. They live and work in close quarters.
Just one sick crew member could potentially make a lot of people sick, if that person is not quarantined and is handling their food items. I’ll bet those people want off that cruise boat badly, all of them, crew and passengers.
