e, I have seen no discussion of the procedures taken to assure all 2,500+ aboard the Westerdam have been adequately tested and Iâm skeptical<<<<
Exactly, the positive patient (and her DH) showed symptoms when she arrived in off her flight in KL. IMO the powers that be made sure westerdam testing was limited so she didnât end up like the Diamond Princess, and exploiting the weakness of a country like Cambodia is going to be seen as a real black eye IMO.
Hubei province daily tallies
New deaths: 139 (same as yesterday). Total Hubei province deaths to date: 1,596
Newly confirmed cases: 1,843 (down from 2,420 yesterday). 1,548 of the new cases were in Wuhan. Total cases to date for the province: 56,249
Here you go, @skieurope.
ââWhile the first results have been reported, they are preliminary at this point and we are awaiting secondary testing for confirmation,â Holland America said in a statement.â
Impact on fashion industry is expected to be significant:
Not sure what impact there will be on the VC funds pouring into SV from ChinaâŠ
Secretly hope that some Chinese-funded development will be put on hold (like the construction of a large resort in the place we like to visit).
Itâs possible to see more Chinese investment here if wealthy Chinese view investing here a diversifier and a safer haven.
I know almost nothing about epidemiology. I understand this virus got the adjective ânovelâ when the outbreak was recognized - but how novel is it really? In other words, could this particular strain be out in the general population in a relatively non-infectious mode but still test as the infectious strain? There seem to be isolated cases with no known contagion pathway back to China.
Is it possible out of any population exhibiting symptoms that one individual might legitimately test positive yet not have endangered others with whom theyâve been in contact? Because otherwise it seems like there already would have been multiple major outbreaks in other places than China and the Diamond Princess.
I once learned from my mother (who had been a 4 star Mariner) that it was highly likely that there would be one or more deaths on just about any Holland America cruise because of the demographic of the average traveler on that line. Iâve only cruised a bit and refer to cruise ships as seething cauldrons of germs.
Western democracies have been a safe haven for rich Chinese for decades, since the 1980s at least. This is also one of the reason they send their kids to western universities ( and Australia ).
Of course investment here isnât new. . My point is, in a turbulent China right now, even more reason to diversify away from their home country.
If one can (allowed to) do so and has the funds to do so.
About dang time they evacuated the Americans from the cruise ship. All those peopleâŠthey should have done this before. We use our military resources for so many things, seems like rescuing Americans from the strong likelihood of catching this virus and getting people off that ship should have been more of a priority.
Daily tallies
New deaths across China: 142 for a total of 1,665 in China and 1,669 worldwide.
Newly confirmed cases across China: 2,009 for a total of 68,500 in China and 69,269 +/-cases worldwide.
Donât recall where I saw it, but was left with the same understanding as doschicos⊠there was a problem with a high number of false negatives, under whatever testing procedure China was using up until recently. Donât remember why, or even whether it was a coherent explanation that would stand for critical examination by whomever might wish to comment on it.
Someone, -donât recall who - asked upthread as to how long coronavirus might survive on a surface. Canât - so I wonât - verify as to the accuracy of this, but:

That link doesnât seem to work, so maybe this one will.

@Marilyn (got your screen name right this time! ) - the virus apparently has a unique genetic code and has never been detected in humans; it is also different from other coronavirused that recently emerged (SARS, MERS). The scientists designing the test for this specific virus picked the region of the genetic code that is unique to this particular virus, so the test is supposed to detect only this virus and not the others.
Regarding the earlier discussion on masks:
âAlthough medical specialists do not entirely agree on the effectiveness of masks against airborne germs, they do find consensus on the danger from hands and fingers, in spreading disease by touching potentially infected surfaces such as door handlesâŠand is the reason all health authorities stress the importance of washing hands.â
ââOne of the things [the mask] prevents you from doing is putting your hands, your fingers, on your nose and mouth, and that may help reduce transmission,ââ
âChina is the worldâs biggest manufacturer of face masks, making about half of the global output with about 20 million a day or more than 7 billion a year."
"Marybeth Sexton, assistant professor in the infectious diseases division at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, said there was a lack of good data about the effectiveness of surgical masks used by the public. âIt is possible that they have some benefit, but other interventions, including hand washing and avoiding going out in public while sick, are likely to be more useful in preventing infection,â she said. "

An additional 70 passengers on the Diamond Princess testing positive for Covid-19 bringing the total number to 355.
âThe US embassy in Japan announced on Saturday that more than 400 US nationals would be flown homeâŠThe US embassy said in a letter to passengers that, based on the high number of confirmed coronavirus cases, passengers and crew members were considered to be âat high risk of exposureâ. US charter flights are expected to arrive on Sunday.â
Hong Kong and Canada are also arranging flights to bring their citizens home. Australia is also examining options.
1.219 have been tested. Of those 355 have tested positive and 73 individuals of the positive cases have not shown symptoms.
Passengers have been mostly confined to their cabins since 2/3.

âChinaâs central bank is to disinfect and store used banknotes before recirculating them in a bid stop the virus spreading.â
Another apparent drop in the number of new cases.
OMG. 92 children have died of the flu in the US so far this year. Terrible. This is a bad flu season. Hope the coronavirus precautions will stop the spread of this killer and other respiratory viruses.
Thanks @BunsenBurner , that helped me understand the identification. I will continue to wash my hands and try to improve my immune system in preparation for the release of quarantined travelers from Miramar. Although most of them should be leaving town.
Re the flu, DS usually has a bad winter cold but this year he caught the flu and was out of work for most of a week. Heâs almost better now fortunately and promising to get the vaccine next fall.
@Marilyn - good plan. Just stay out of crowded indoor places!
Mr. B is planning a few trips to your neck of the woods. I might join him. The flights to Ontario are dirt cheap! His business is between SD and LA, so that would be a convenient place to fly into.
