Coronavirus May 2020 - Observations, information, discussion

Do you have a link to the mortality statistics that you quoted? I have not seen those.

I have seen this, which compares covid-19 to the average death rate in the US by cause of death. It tells a different story…

^Yes, the whole idea is to LIMIT exposure as much as possible. Obviously, we can’t eliminate it. That’s why it drives me nuts when my dad says, “Why can’t I have visitors who live in nursing homes? I’m already exposed to caregivers 24/7.” Argh!! I read him the riot act one more time and now I’m done. It’s his life. I did tell him that I have one friend whose father just passed away from Alzheimer’s whom the family couldn’t see for the last two months of his life. Just horrible. I’m trying to save my dad from that fate.

I’m posting this because it’s apparent there are many people who did not watch the hearing yesterday so missed what the top public health official said about reopening and it’s consequences.

“Two of the federal government’s top health officials painted a grim picture of the months ahead on Tuesday, warning a Senate panel that the coronavirus pandemic was far from contained, just a day after President Trump declared that “we have met the moment and we have prevailed.”
The officials — Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, and Dr. Robert R. Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — predicted dire consequences if the nation reopened its economy too soon, noting that the United States still lacked critical testing capacity and the ability to trace the contacts of those infected.
“If we do not respond in an adequate way when the fall comes, given that it is without a doubt that there will be infections that will be in the community, then we run the risk of having a resurgence,” said Dr. Fauci, the longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, who is at the forefront of efforts to find a coronavirus vaccine.
If states reopen their economies too soon, he warned, “there is a real risk that you will trigger an outbreak that you may not be able to control,” which could result not only in “some suffering and death that could be avoided, but could even set you back on the road to trying to get economic recovery.”

You realize

You DO understand, don’t you, that the test is only as good as your next trip out of the house? It only tells you that at the time of testing, you tested negative. Do you want to be tested every day. Go for it!

Yes, a course designed as an online course is taking that into account. Before Covid there were many online courses taught at colleges. My D took one her senior year in HS. My son took many virtual classes in the summer. But they did not cost us anything, or were not that expensive. and 100% fall online classes would be different than the last minute that was this spring, but not every class translates to online. Performing arts as an example.

Testing is a tool in the toolbox and absolutely helps reduce spread. This is a fact. Its not full-proof, obviously. There is no magic bullet except a vaccine! I don’t get the all or nothing comments on this thread - no, we can’t stay home forever, yes, there will be an increase in cases from the lows we see on quarantine, but as long as the outbreaks can be controlled (and they can - with testing/mitigation), we will find a way to live with this virus.

Dropped S21 off at the orthodontist. He wore a mask, as did the other kid who walked in there. The dental assistant wore a mask, took his temp, and squirted hand sanitizer into his hand and directed him back into a seat. None of the parents came inside the office - everyone was waiting in their cars for their kids.

Besides being factually wrong as others have pointed out, when you’re killed in a car accident driving to work, unless it’s a really bad multi car accident (quite rare), you’re not killing others who go on to kill others who go on to kill others (keep repeating).

I wish everyone had the choice to stay home if they preferred it. Those of you who want to do it should be the only guinea pigs out there seeing who dies and how long the side effects last. As doctors learn more from those affected it will help the rest of us.

What is happening in Michigan?

Why would you say something so patently false???

Take a look at this again:

Or this:

We can disagree about how we open up society, but people need to get over the “it’s just a flu” nonsense.

So…as some if you know…I volunteer at a charity thrift store. They are planning to re-open next Wednesday and sent their guidelines out to all the volunteers, most of whom are retirees.

No one under 65 will be permitted to volunteer for now. The state is suggesting over 65 folks continue to stay home. Ok.

So…if I wanted to, I could shop there any time they are open…but i can’t volunteer until the age restriction goes away.

Please help me understand why I can shop there…or anywhere else…but I can’t help out volunteering (I should add, my “job” there is not direct contact with customers).

Maybe liability concerns? Or the fact that a shopper is usually in and out, but an employee (volunteer) would be there for several hours and other people would be in and out of the store, possibly raising the risk of bringing the virus into the store (even of you aren’t in direct contact with customers, others in the store are, who you might be in contact with).

Just pondering…

I am one person who stated upthread that I will be getting an antibody test. Here are some reasons I’m doing so now.

  1. The tests seem to now be in plentiful supply in my community.
  2. My blood can add to the data collection about COVID-19.
  3. I am curious as to whether I’ve been infected. I might learn something about the likelihood of infection for people like me (staying at home most of the time, my age, etc.).
  4. If I have antibodies, I could possibly be a plasma donor.
  5. I’ve participated in other scientific studies (one short-term study for an osteoporosis drug, one long-term (still ongoing) study about Alzheimer’s disease, for which I’m in the no-family-history-of-Alzheimer’s-disease group). I haven’t done anything major, like donating an organ, but I feel comfortable with low-risk activities such as providing a tube of blood.

As a person who lives in Michigan and I do not have any knowledge except what is happening in my own little corner here in Northern Michigan.

I personally think that people in the northern part of the state think that the coronavirus is something that affects Detroit and the southeast portion of the state. I am 4 hours from Detroit and many think that what is happening there is a world away from my area.

We are a rural, not very populated area. People are tired of staying home. They are thinking that they are safe and can start to open their lives up. We also have a lot of people who have vacation homes and based on the travel I saw on Friday, there is a fair number of people traveling up here.

I am frankly surprised and resigned to the fact that the stores that are open are busy. Many do not wear masks. At least now the employees do. I also have to travel at least 10 miles to get to any store to shop and that is par for the area.

My husband played golf last week, 8 people, he was the only one who wore a mask inside the clubhouse. We declined to play this week, the lack of masks was a big reason.

Disclaimer. This is just my experience and not what is being reported on our local news.

I had a question for our computer guy, so I called him yesterday. Oh, my gosh, he went off on a rant how he’s not going to wear a mask because hardly anyone is dying from this illness. Blah, blah, blah. I was shocked, because he’s an educated man.

We didn’t resolve our issue, so later he texted me that he could drop by our home office to help. Uh, no!! I’ll live with the minor problem for awhile. DH agreed we can’t let him in our house.

I’m not staying home out of fear of death - I’ve faced that beast once and the fear is gone. My kids and H aren’t at home due to fear either. We are home because we don’t want our actions to jeopardize the lives of others. Why does it seem like some don’t get this point? This isn’t a sign of disrespect for those who are essential workers. I’d love to go back to work - I’m not getting paid.

Switching gears, a friend’s kid who goes to a small LAC hasn’t received his year end grades yet due to cheating on the finals. This is a school with a supposedly strong honor code.
My high schooler has said this is also a big issue with his online classes.

D19, at a top LAC, reports that a number of her classmates are talking about facetiming/zooming and discussing questions on the take home final exams. Obviously we told her not to participate.

Not sure what is happening in S21’s HS classes, but probably some cheating happening there too.

Does anyone know if it has been verified or found to be false that Dr. Fauci has investments with Gates in Vaccines and pharmaceuticals?

I wish they had asked him this question yesterday. It’s always best to hear right from the source.

Twitter headquarters announced employees who want to work from home permanently can do so, but they will reopen their headquarters building in September. I expect commercial real estate prices to plummet in cities soon.

Jonathan Haidt’s The Righteous Mind is about different moral foundations that people have. What you are saying is that you and others in your family place a high importance on caring for others (reducing harm to others). Other people may not have the same importance for that. However, you may place less importance on some other moral foundations (liberty, fairness, loyalty, authority, sanctity) than other people do.
