Coronavirus May 2020 - Observations, information, discussion

It’s definitely bothersome when the person you’re talking with at the grocery store (insert scene of your choice) is believed more than folks who have dedicated their lives to something and have facts to back their thoughts up.

Humans might disagree on various thoughts/theories like what’s better to do now, but some things are just plain facts at that point. Having had the flu shot does not make one test positive for Covid = fact.

Yet that’s another one my conspiracy believing neighbor has told us - the one who’s sure she had it back in Sept - long before it appeared anywhere it was apparently here in rural PA. It couldn’t have been a common cold or other respiratory illness - she’s positive. No test needed.

Well, there’s that. And then doing what the administration recommends - and then not. Utter chaos. And people are surprised school officials worry about reopening.

So we think my husband had COVID. Since there was a shortage of tests, he was told he wasn’t sick enough to be tested, and it’s true, his was a mild case. Fair enough. Fast forward a month. Still no tests. But antibody tests are now available in a few places. After days of sitting on line, pushing enter countless times trying to schedule an appointment online, he actually got one. Woo-hoo. Scheduled for Wednesday of last week. Then quickly re-scheduled for Thursday. No matter, Thursday it was. It would take two-three working days, the results given online through a personal “portal.” On Monday his “portal” hadn’t even been created. Tuesday it was, but no result. No result today. About an hour ago he was notified - antibody test results now take a week+.

This is not in some fly-by-night clinic. This is at National Jewish Hospital, one of the best, if not THE BEST pulmonary hospital in the United States. A week.

Is there ANY wonder we’re in the spot we’re in?

Why, oh why can Germany or Austria give tests to all its school and college kids – sometimes testing them TWICE per WEEK – and the richest, supposedly the best prepared for pandemic nation can’t get its act together in months?

I am totally disgusted. And defeated. We’re s*****ed.

Do you mean any of these?

Take your pick…I am wondering if anyone had any thoughts.

Test distribution seems to be a big problem. In this county, anybody can get a free test, regardless of symptoms or exposure. Our kids should major in supply chain to fix this

No thoughts other than plenty of scientists invest in plenty of companies knowing they do interesting research. Heck, my daughter – who, as a PhD candidate isn’t yet a “real” scientist – has invested a bit of money in a couple. Just like plenty of tech people buy stock in promising tech companies. Just like Warren Buffet invests in… well, you get the point.

Now, I would have some stronger thoughts if he dumped a bunch of stock on inside information. Like these people

My opinion is, how does this make any sense and why did you repost it?

The Gates Foundation is a charity. What would it even mean for a private individual like Anthony Fauci to “invest” in a charity and make large profits? Charities are not entities that can be invested in for profit.

@katliamom Results are likely dependent on the capacity of the lab processing them. In my area results are coming back in 2-3 days, though they quote you 3-5.

@katliamom - it all depends on the capacity of the labs processing the samples. We also don’t know if the German testing produces fast results or not. We only hearing that samples are being collected twice a week… I bet that is not the whole story.

I have to say that “just in time manufacturing” eagerly adopted by many companies to reduce the costs of their inventories has come home to roost. Big time.

The ones at the airport in Austria take under three hours.

The ones in Germany take three minutes, with results delivered to students overnight:

Yeah, that was in the Plandemic Video but it is false. The Gates Foundation is donating many, many millions to help find a vaccine that will work and etc. Fauci isn’t going to make milllions from a vaccine. I watched that video and think it is unfortunate she is spreading falsehoods. Seemed to me she had a very bad experience with Dr. Fauci years ago and personal vendetta since. Who was in the right and wrong, I’m sure I don’t know but I read more about it and what I read did not align with her version of events.

My thoughts? My thoughts are that too few people in our country are science and math literate, trust science, and are skilled at reading deeply and critical thinking. People like to read fast and easy things, listening to news that is exciting and not think deeply, question things, see bias in things. Why a large percent of the public believes things that scientists, experts such as virologists and infectious disease specialists tell us are not true and don’t believe these experts is very frustrating and not only that, dangerous and and scary. Freedom of speech is a great thing but not so much when used to undermine public trust in things that keep us safe like the above experts. Freedom of speech shouldn’t mean freedom to lie and spread false information about things that impact our health and economy in my own opinion and I know many would disagree. Especially if a large percent of people can’t tell valid from invalid things they read, things like Plandemic and other false claims about the virus are damaging to our country and the world in my opinion.

Also, I think social media should have done a better job removing those types of things. That’s what I think. My aunt sent my mother that video and it ticked me off. My mother wants to get her haircut badly but cases are still very active in her area so this is not a good idea. She is over 75. Watching that video could make her doubt safety precautions are really needed and could cost her or my father their lives. So, not a fan of that video. Yes, people have freedom of speech but a solid democracy relies of an educated population who can tell what is a valid source of information and what isn’t. We are losing that with more and more believing in things that are from wacky fringe believes not supported by science.

If only. I’m sorry to say this isn’t actually happening. If you read the NYT article closely, it’s a pilot scheme in ONE school, financed privately, in a part of the country that had barely any cases. Everywhere else, you will be tested if you have symptoms or are identified as possibly having been exposed.

After having read about the French researchers turning up corona cases from December, I’m beginning to think Germany’s and Austria’s success is a combination of pure dumb luck and a decisive lockdown. I’m now thinking that the virus, probably having circulated under the radar in Italy, France, Spain and Belgium all January, with cases exploding in mid February when it was already everywhere and couldn’t be contained, simply arrived a few weeks later, and lockdown happened earlier along the curve, just in time to enable the health sector to stay on top of it.

Reopening countries might work if cases are sufficiently down to remain on top of it. And as South Korea has shown, containment remains fragile.

I googled your quote and this popped up. I didn’t even bother reading it when I saw that it came from noted anti-vaxxer Robert Kennedy in his interview with “Gateway Pundit.”

https://www.thegatewaypundit.com/2020/04/bobby-kennedy-jr-claims-dr-fauci-gates-foundation-will-make-billions-coronavirus-vaccine/

Are they using the nasal swab on the kids in that school being tested in Germany? Yikes! I can’t see repeated testing taking off on a mass scale unless it is the saliva test. That’s not an argument against testing by any means. But the nasal swab on a regular ongoing basis? Yikes. That will get old quickly.

I wonder if a kid tests positive, quarantines for two weeks or so, tests negative, and then goes back to school, will he still have to get ongoing testing?

Thank you Tigerle. It’s a bit comforting that we are not as behind as it first appeared. Makes me feel a bit less third world…

I am still many many pages behind and reading sequentially, so may have missed it, but if not posted yet, Atul Gawande had a good article in the New Yorker this week.
