Coronavirus May 2020 - Observations, information, discussion

It’s striking to me how those curves follow each other: social distancing, infections, deaths. It seems to be a really obvious relationship mathematically.

I think the problem is that we don’t know the infection numbers in a lot of areas of the country.

^^^ Let them eat cake!!! And tell them to learn to hunt.

Also, do you know of any countries that have taken this approach? (not opening until there’s a vaccine or therapeutic remedy)

The government needs to step in. More helping the people instead of the big corporations. We are essentially doing the same now as we did when we bailed out the big banks.

When we have to shut down again it will be less open than it has been.

I’d suggest people start planning for that eventuality now.

Or just ignore me and go out and do whatever. Shop, dine, have parties…

From WLS-Chicago online article:

“…Governor JB Pritzker said Tuesday that Illinois has become the No. 1 state in the country in coronavirus testing per capita in the last seven days. He’s optimistic the state is on track to move to Phase 3 of his reopening plan by the end of the month…”

Phase 3 is not a HUGE change, but, for example, if people can get a haircut at their favorite salon in June, it will go a long way re: goodwill & cheer. With precautions, this seems low risk.

The article I grabbed the quote from also mentioned contact tracing programs being ramped up. We are getting there.

Nope. But there are plenty of examples of them having to shut down whole regions since they’ve opened.

Germany is the latest to have to do that. And they did a much better job of getting case numbers way down. Way better than we’ve done.

Really, whataboutism is so pointless. America is opening up. We will soon know at what cost. What people might need to consider is while the current leadership is abysmal, there seems to be no viable alternative in the offing.

"The more than 40,000 National Guard members deployed to states to help in coronavirus relief may end up one day short of qualifying for federal benefits under the Post-9/11 GI bill once President Trump’s executive order deploying them expires on June 24.

“An official with the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said in an interagency call on May 12 reported on by Politico that the guardsmen will face a “hard stop” on June 24 to prevent them from reaching the 90 days of duty credit needed to qualify for early retirement and education benefits.”

Unfortunately (IMO), too many decisions are being made that are anti-worker.

I would imagine an excellent way to prepare for that eventuality would include becoming heavily armed.

The polls I have seen on reopening do not show a partisan split as much as a generational one. Older people, often financially secure or retired, naturally support restrictions which younger people, generally healthy and poorer, resent greatly.

I’m not trying to be sarcastic or facile here, and I know I keep harping on it. I strongly believe in drastic wealth redistribution. That would take way too long for the current crisis, and it wouldn’t address every issue you raised, but I’m convinced a different economic system would have prevented the economic cataclysms many are facing. Maybe next pandemic. :frowning:

If that is what one thinks they should do, I don’t care.

I won’t be arming myself, nor will my husband.

@ucbalumnus

I’m not quite sure what to make of the mobility data.

Meaning, I’m not convinced greater mobility necessarily translates into greater riskier behavior across the board.

In my area, as the weather improves – well not THIS week – people are getting out more. Not just Home Depot, but to walk in the parks, forest preserves, down by the harbor, etc.

Divided we fall… it seems like the consensus here is that the US is a failing state/society…

How will we financially support all of the destitute people? There are 36M without jobs right now, what you propose would result in much larger numbers of unemployed…many without a financial safety net.

I see no such consensus here.

So the only things open should be ‘healthcare workers, grocery and pharmacy’

So, no police, no subway/transit, no gas stations, no electrical grid workers, no cellular services workers, no road repair, no SIRRUS XM radio. No one answers when you call with a problem on your credit card. No clothing or shoe services. No plumbing (well, it wouldn’t matter since the municipal water district isn’t working so you might not have water to worry about).

No banking…but that’s okay… the masses are broke.

Hey…NO POLITICIANS…okay…I’m starting to change my mind on that plan.

We are still shelter in place in Illinois. On my afternoon walk with the dogs, walked by the playfield at a local elementary school.

The playfield had been cordoned off with tape some time ago, because kids and adults kept using it to play, workout, etc. For a time, it worked, but today there were 17 kids on the field, in two distinct groups…one shooting hoops, one group just hanging out…no distancing at all.

Texted my friend who I frequently walk with and he said “it’s all over, people don’t care anymore”. I tend to agree with that, unfortunately.

Older people often do not go out much any way, and staying home isn’t really any sacrifice for them, as evidenced by some posts Young people, alas, are being deprived of some of the most formative experiences of their lives, and the chance to earn a livelihood. No wonder we are divided on this.

This thread has devolved into class warfare. See you on the other side of the pandemic…
