Coronavirus May 2020 - Observations, information, discussion

LOL! The last time I went into a store, several weeks ago, I went in during old geezer early hours (but before many were wearing masks). The guy at the door asked if I was 60. I told him if it weren’t for social distancing I’d kiss him, and asked if he wanted to see my medicare card.

I look way younger with my mask!

No one was banned from buying seeds or mowing their lawns in Michigan. If your news source is saying this, you need a new one.

You couldn’t buy non essentials at the huge box stores. You could get them at smaller stores no problem.

Our local grocery store sells seeds…and lots of people were buying them. Also, in this state nurseries and farms (many have farm stores and also sell seedlings and plants) were never closed.

Big Box stores like Home Depot and Lowe’s also we’re selling plants and seeds.

What a neighboring county is doing about graduations - holding them in a reeeealy big venue, with parents in cars in the infield at the speedway.

@dragonmom that’s great. We have a drive in theater and I know they have gotten some requests about having graduations there. Families and grads in their cars…nice slide show and the like on the big screen.

@romanigypsyeyes You are incorrect. I know absolutely firsthand that retailers - not just big box stores- were not permitted to sell seeds and gardening products- when the governor first issued her order. You never left your house, so I think you need to trust me on this since I dealt extensively with this issue

Has anyone posted this yet…?
** Adding A Nylon Stocking Layer Could Boost Protection From Cloth Masks, Study Finds**
https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2020/04/22/840146830/adding-a-nylon-stocking-layer-could-boost-protection-from-cloth-masks-study-find

“ Researchers at Northeastern University have found that adding an outer layer made from nylon stockings to a homemade face covering can boost its ability to filter out small particles in the air by creating a tighter seal between the mask and the wearer’s face. In some cases, that extra nylon layer helped homemade cloth masks match or exceed the filtering capability of medical-grade surgical masks.

Even the 3M surgical mask performed better with stockings in their study: Testing showed that it went from blocking out 75% of small particles to 90% with the addition of a pantyhose overlayer. By comparison, an N95 respirator, which is designed to create a tight seal around the face, blocks out at least 95% of small particles when worn properly.“

eta more of the how…
“ Then, the researchers added to the masks a nylon stocking overlayer made by cutting a ring of material, about 8 to 10 inches top to bottom, from one leg on a pair of pantyhose. “I would recommend perhaps a queen-sized [pair of pantyhose] just to make breathing easier,” Fernandez says. The wearer puts the ring over their head like a headband, then pulls it down on top of the cloth mask, creating a tight fit to the face. This forces particles that might have otherwise gone around the loose edges of the mask and been inhaled to instead go through the mask, which can filter them out, Fernandez explains.”

I got the information from a Michigan friend who was also forbidden to use her motor boat to go fishing.

The point was that when restrictions are not based on medicine or common sense, the credibility of those restrictions is lost.

Thanks to the people that are supplying information on local events and promising studies and treatments.

In case the people that keep posting angry political stuff don’t know, there is such a place as Reddit where you can post without getting the thread shut down. We get that you are angry, but enough is enough.

Old Forester Bourbon is going to show a turtle race on their You Tube channel, I think at 6pm EDT today. Kentucky Turtle Derby. So that’s what I’ll watch with my mint Julep.

Today’s errands: signing an elected official’s nomination paper at an “event” (table out on the driveway) hosted by another elected official; buying a lot of stamps, in preparation for writing and sending postcards to prospective voters this summer and fall; and stopping on the spur of the moment at a stand with seedlings and bedding plants and buying one square of onions, which probably won’t survive in my so-called garden. The few people at these locations all observed physical-distancing guidelines.

I can’t moderate this thread, but this is a friendly reminder that you still have to comply with the Terms of Service for this “light moderating” experiment to work. It seems to be the same users who have trouble following the rules who will ruin it for everyone else.

Getting a truckload of dirt at the local topsoil place. I’d say their business is at 30% of usual, but maybe because only very determined or complete idiots can think of getting dirt under pouring rain. ?

Today in GA the blue Angels flew over. Perfect blue skies. For about 5 seconds of seeing them Traffic was a nightmare . People did stay in or around their cars though.

Also in GA, more traffic in general, but it is a perfect day out. I have heard of restaurants in my town not adhering to distancing of outdoor tables. Not sure if true or not. Some retail did open. Parking lots are not full. Need to go to a local well known shoe store sometime this week for D17 as her stuff is still being help hostage in her dorm, and she has no sneakers at home . She has feet issues and its important to try on shoes versus ordering online. not sure what the rules for try -on will be.

Also seeing that most stores will not allow returns, even unopened ones at this time. This is true at all the pet stores. My Petco, where I know all the employees said that they will make some rare exceptions . Today we removed the last 2 cats in the back room that the rescue I volunteer for has. We have been able to keep the care up of these cats, but they are not getting the human interaction they need. They were moved to HQ. We are still doing adoptions by appointment only. Since this started in March we have had 400 applications come in! We have seen some longtimers get adopted. The dogs have been flying off the shelf. I just hope when this is over people keep these pets.

H and I wanted to support a local, family-owned restaurant. We went for takeout—4 breakfasts. There were a few other customers also getting takeout. The owners were pleased to see their regulars and gave business. While we were there, I noticed the grocery store in same shopping center seemed very uncrowded, so went and got a few groceries there. They even had Fuji apples on sale @$.99/lb! The greens looked nice too—bought some of those, tofu, sausage and other foods.

We may go on Monday to Waikiki to take photos and walk around for exercise with masks and socially distancing. We likely will never again see it this uncrowded, once the state is re-opened for tourism.

Yes, some restriction don’t make sense, but there would be so many exception that I think it’s easier administratively to just have the blanket restriction.

A beautiful day here. Took the dog for a walk on the beach. A fair number of sunbathers (all with ample space between groupings) and a ton of surfers.

Other than that, just sitting out on the deck enjoying the perfect weather. Thanks to that post a bit up thread, I’m now contemplating harvesting some of my mint and making a mint julep ?. Happy Saturday, all!

Please don’t punish all of us for the same users who break the rules. Thank you.

I mostly agree but not about the heating and air conditioning system. The study into both an office and a restaurant in China where there was known and well documented transmission show why. In the restaurant case the FLOW of airDIRECTLY from one table to one in its direct line of sight was where you saw transmission. The waiters and hundred or so other diners in that restaurant breathing the same circulated by the AC system air? NO transmission. In the office case there was wide transmission vertically across a row of cubicles. Cubicles on the other side? Mostly spared. Based on these documented examples it’s more likely transmission is occurring in densely populated buildings thru elevators and touch points. And thru inter family transmission ratter than thru HVAC systems between walls of apartments.
