Coronavirus May 2020 - Observations, information, discussion

@twoinanddone,

Not in NY it hasn’t. No in person religious services allowed at all and no gathering of 10 unrelated and not in same household was allowed before this.

The Governor specifically mentioned Minyons in his presser the other day as the reason the number is now 10. And limited to 10.

This is the priest at my church! He was not baptizing infants but blessing food baskets before Easter. He had people drive by and squirted the food baskets through open windows.

That’s cool…and I’m a bit relieved it was food baskets haha

Sorry, I guess I should be more careful in terms of whom to ignore! Thanks for the heads-up.

Meaning the letter is for them? I don’t think so, because the letters are coming from all denominations. Or you mean the law is for the ultra-O?

Wow. The National Hockey League announced that they now deem the NHL regular season over. They will begin a special Stanley Cup playoffs in July, in two hub cities. There will be no fans in attendance.

Some of the teams, like my own terrible San Jose Sharks, are done already. Teams that would have had a chance to make the playoffs have a special play-in as the first part of the special playoffs. Teams that were fighting for top seeds will have a round robin to determine the top seeds. Then they’ll do Western and Eastern Conference playoffs in the hub cities, and then have the Stanley Cup Finals (in one of the hub cities I think).

Interestingly, hockey seems like it would be a possible sport to SD the players, what with their full coverings.

@twoinanddone,

Not in NY it hasn’t.

No, the 10 person rule. Because if it was less than ten no minyon. Also, to avoid legal challenge the ten person rule applies to non religious groups of people, too. So, you can have a party in your house with up to 10 people, go to the beach with up to 10 people in your group, etc.

If the max was set at less than 10 for religious services, the ultra orthodox would have likely sued the State that it was discriminatory.

Few days ago a very popular kid in our town died of a car accident, drove the wrong way, saw a car coming in, he avoided it and hit a tree. Whole car bursted in flame his body was unrecognizable. Shook the town. Last night they had a memorial service at a school soccer field, probably hundreds of kids came out, not much social distancing.

What I also noticed is that kids in our town have clusters of friends they hang out with and they keep it a 2 or 3 person group. They hang out with the same kids the entire lockdown. They seem to respect the rule and swear they wouldn’t “cheat” on each other so I guess I am ok with that (their parents were completely fine). D19 didn’t want to take that risk but she has been talking on FT, zooming and drive by hellos so she isn’t lonely. Now with working 20 hours per week plus 2 online summer classes she is quite busy. She had to turn down a couple of math tutoring gigs bc she doesn’t have time. She will volunteer when she has some down time but not making a commitment.

Another observation is that Wegmans no longer limits the numbers of customers in their stores, so no lines but mask is still required. People were shoulder to shoulder at times but at least with mask on. I have not seen anyone who doesn’t wear mask in the stores yet, any store. Looks like 100% mask compliance in our area.

More to add to the fire in Michigan

Do as I say, not as I do. I’ve been supportive of the governor but this is shameful.

Buy him a squirt gun shaped like something other than a real gun, like a flamingo or a fish or something, please. Better optics.

Not my governor so I don’t have a dog in that fight… but IMO it’s unfair to judge an elected politician by the dumb gaffes or opinions of a spouse. Even intelligent, caring partners don’t always agree on everything and they sure as heck don’t have control over the words their spouse speaks. Unless the elected politician agrees with the bad behavior or somehow uses his/her office to enable a wrongdoing spouse, it’s not reasonable to judge one person based on the words of another.

Even when he uses his wife’s status as a way to get to the head of the line?

My problem is that the governor should have not said that her husband was joking. I don’t like that part. Own up to what your spouse did, do not insult me and say that it was joking.

The guy who puts in the docks does not care one bit who you are. Million dollar cottages and CEO’s of big companies are a dime a dozen up north. It’s a line, you get in it and get your dock when it’s your time.

I had another near-normal errand day in Chicagoland!

Annual eye exam at a private practice, tire place, feed store, Trader Joe’s, and Jewel.

Masks everywhere except for the men working in the back at the tire place, and the men at the feed store pulled their masks down to their chins as soon as customers were far enough away. Today was one of our first hot days (mid-80s).

At Trader Joe’s, a male customer ahead of me, waiting in line to get in, pulled a bandana out of his pocket and tied it on as a face covering. He did not pull it up over his nose.

I heard someone say “Oooooh, we’re all going to DIE…!” and it might have been him, but I’m not exactly sure where the voice came from.

I saw the employee at the door talking to him and gesturing towards her own face.

Then when it was his turn to go in, I saw him walk in without having pulled the bandana up over his nose.

The TJ’s employee and the next customer waiting in line seemed to be talking smack about the guy, so maybe it was him that made the smart aleck remark.

I had a brief conversation with a dentist friend of mine and he said he is now open for non-emergencies, albeit with a very different schedule. We didn’t have time to go into deets.

The governor’s husband’s gaffe is truly a non-issue. His boat wasn’t bumped up and that was the end of the story. It’s only getting traction because there’s not much else the opposition party can put up to show the governor failing.

From the owner: “The statement said Mallory was respectful and understanding when the company couldn’t schedule the installation early.” The owner lives in a very red area and there was no advantage to him lying about the governor’s husband’s demeanor.

In Michigan, the lockdown worked. There was a time when Michigan had the 3rd most cases and now we’re out of the top 5. Our rates have dropped significantly and our hospitals are doing much better. Many are upset that the governor’s approval rating has risen and are doing everything possible to stir up controversy.

We’re doing a closed social circle with our family. We travel between each other to visit and if any of us breaks the circle, we do the 14 day quarantine. It’s worked out very well for us and my mental health has improved considerably. This is how we’re going to do things for the foreseeable future.

Mr R has been called back to work and goes back in June. He almost quit but he and his work found a happy medium where he’s only going to be working part time and only with one family - thus significantly reducing the number of people he’s exposed to. It’s not perfect but it’s a good compromise.

Except that they get pretty close to each other much of the time, and many of the non-goalies do not wear any kind of mask or shield over their nostrils or mouth.

From today’s JHU Center for Health Security email newsletter…

South Korean Study Shows No Evidence Recovered COVID-19 Patients Can Infect Others (NPR)

https://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2020/05/22/861061727/south-korean-study-shows-no-evidence-recovered-covid-patients-can-infect-others

South Korea’s Center for Disease Control has reassuring news about people with COVID-19 who test positive for the coronavirus weeks after their symptoms have resolved. Health officials there studied 285 patients who tested negative for the virus after recovering, but weeks later tested positive again. the scientists followed up with nearly 800 of those people’s personal contacts, such as family members. They found no evidence that they had contracted the virus from the people who had a fresh positive result. The scientists also tried to grow the virus in secretions from these patients. They could not.

Just a note that “escaped from a lab” does not mean “created in a lab” or “deliberately released from a lab.” It is possible that procedures were not followed on legitimate research products. There are a lot of non-crazy conspiracy theorists looking into this possibility. But no origin story for how it got started in the human population has solid proof, yet. I hope that understanding emerges, because it will help prevent the next one from becoming a pandemic.

Hockey is a sweaty, close contact sport. Have you ever smelled a hockey player? Awful, stinky, and you can’t get that smell out of their clothes. And mine was a 10 year old GIRL who smelled bad. By the time they are high school boys it is unbearable.

And there is spitting and sweating and bashing into each other.

Helmets with plastic shields could be mandated, but the spit would still come out the bottom of the helmet.

FWIW

Model projects 212000 deaths by Sept. 1 with reopening.

They also have model with no reopening.
