Coronavirus May 2020 - Observations, information, discussion

I have seen all sorts of hand sanitizer around, but not Purell or GermX. Some from local distilleries, some made by the local pharmacy etc. I have bought a few bottles to keep refilling my travel size container.

Toilet paper has been easy to find. Have not seen any type of disinfectant wipe since this all began, but I use paper towels and a Lysol liquid spray anyway.

UPS is very behind with delivering some products one of my vendors made, frustrating but it’s not life-essential so I am not complaining.

As for seeing the dentist, we’re not this year. H and I are doing more brushing and flossing, and we hope it’s good enough.

I wish we could postpone other medical care, but that’s not always a good idea. After my recent experience, I vowed not to return to the local university hospital clinics until after a safe and effective vaccine is available.

This morning I learned I have to go back for surgery very soon. I’m far more stressed about the corona virus exposure than the actual surgery. Of all places, I thought that medical centers would enforce their rules about mask wearing and distancing. Nope. SMH.

San Francisco is expanding their mask wearing requirements. Basically anytime you are outside and will come within 30 feet of someone. With few exceptions.

I like that they list specifically the exception of being in a car by yourself. But I must admit I’m a bit befuddled by this one…

So I guess if you are unhoused you can go maskless with anyone else who is ‘unhoused’. Well, you can’t sit with them…you need to be moving…Hmmmm…punctuation is a lot art…Then again, maybe this is what SF really meant.

^ yes, I believe it is elsewhere and small cities such as mine don’t get priority deliveries. I checked on Amazon fresh and got the message “we don’t deliver to your area.”

When this started we had one bottle and my travel purse container. On one of our walks, H found a half filled bottle thrown on the side of the road and picked it up. I made fun of him then, but now we are very glad. We also found some remnants of a super large container we had bought for him at school.

We have been rationing it out, only using it when we leave a store. We’ve been doing ok, but I would like to send my kids off to their apartments in the next month/two with some. Or maybe they will have better luck there.

New England Journal of Medicine article. Interesting talk about masks.

At my work, masks are not required unless working within 6’ of others.

From the article, “We know that wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection. Public health authorities define a significant exposure to Covid-19 as face-to-face contact within 6 feet with a patient with symptomatic Covid-19 that is sustained for at least a few minutes (and some say more than 10 minutes or even 30 minutes). The chance of catching Covid-19 from a passing interaction in a public space is therefore minimal. In many cases, the desire for widespread masking is a reflexive reaction to anxiety over the pandemic.”

I have been able to pick.up hand sanitizer, GermX, at my local Target lately. If someone really truly needs some I could probably get some and ship it. I can only buy one bottle at a time. We currently have plenty.

I’d wear one if it works.

‘Wearable tech can spot coronavirus symptoms before you even realize you’re sick. Here’s how.’

“Data from a wearable device can reveal coronavirus symptoms days before you even realize you’re sick, researchers have found in preliminary studies.

That means fitness trackers could be on their way to becoming sickness trackers.

The initial findings from two academic studies are a small step in the fight against the coronavirus, and a giant leap for wearable tech. If Fitbits, Apple Watches and Oura smart rings prove to be an effective early-warning system, they could help reopen communities and workplaces - and evolve from consumer tech novelties into health essentials.”

Interesting article from the NEJM linked in 4884… File it under “common sense.” It is so obvious that the chances of catching C19 from fleeting interactions even in enclosed spaces are infinitesimal.

I finally relented after weeks and weeks and started wearing a mask most of the time I went to the grocery store, but just as a courtesy and to be civil. Never thought it made a difference to either my own or anyone else’s risks.

Picked up GermX at Walgreens a couple of weeks ago. Found a larger size at Costco in a neighboring community during ‘old codger’ hours. Then saw another pallet of sanitizer at my normal Costco (again at the start of OCHs).

It seems our supply is returning…at least for the moment.

Our TJ’s had a full shelf of their 70% alcohol spray sanitizer in the purse sized bottles. No limits.

I’ll wear a cloth mask in stores. I’ll admit it gives people some sense of security, perhaps false. I’ll admit it will slow down virus from my exhaling. I’m not into wearing one outside. if I pass by someone while hiking it’s just that, a fleeting encounter. I get the extended close contact. I get indoors within certain distances depending on airflow, etc. I don’t see the need on a beach. I don’t see the need while walking around outside.

Everyone’s comfort level and anxiety certainly varies.

Oh I would NEVER wear a mask outside. For my level of risk tolerance, that would just be silly.

I agree.

I also would never wear a mask outside unless I was in a crowd of people that I couldn’t avoid.

Ditto to wearing one outside.

Fwiw: A poster that seems to have abandoned posting on the thread, for some reason or another, stated that it’s silly season on research papers. Actually, that’s not exactly what was said… it was more along the lines of "expect half of these to never be reviewed and published.

I’ve thought about compiling a list of the do’s and don’ts that I’ve seen over the last several months and commenting on how they’ve weathered time. Be much less time consuming to simply say… most of them haven’t, not well.

There’s an expectation that today’s science will be a little better than yesterday’s, and I agree with that, but… why expect it to be fact?

Exactly. That’s why wearing masks outside is silly. Do your best to stay 6 feet from people and if you can’t - as you are passing by, exhale or don’t breath if that makes you feel better.

Where I live I could easily end up at a place where there would be a crowd. Instead of worrying about when to put on a mask, I just have one on when I leave my apartment. My building also has a requirement of everyone wearing a mask in the public area - lobby, elevator, laundry room. I never touch my face/mask after I leave my apartment, and I wash my hands before I take off my mask.

Fang:

I don’t believe there’ll be a vaccine I’m willing to try, in a time frame that won’t bankrupt the country waiting for it. So…

  • Protect the nursing home population, as best as we're able to without killing them with isolation.
  • Those old enough to consider themselves high-risk (that are still making their own decisions) can make them as to what they'll do. Have a mask and catch up with their younger relations outside. For those who live at home with them, the government can place them out in hotels.

(Given the money that’s being spent to make up for what’s been done to the economy, I doubt it would be noticed, and would at least help the hospitality industry out.)

  • Everyone else can do what they want.

That’s very kind of you. I only have it in the cars and we use it when we go out to the grocery store, gas, and takeout. How is it that everyone is going through so much? I bought 4 - 5 oz size plus 4 pocket sizes ones (back in late February, when I was watching the happenings in Italy) and haven’t finished half of it. There is no need to use it at home.

PS, I can see where @OneMoreToGo2021 might have gone through a ton and might need some, considering he went out ** every single day**
since February. ? (attempting to lighten up this thread ?)

Nobody doubts that it is picking off the sickest people it infects. But for your supposition to be true, it would have to be infecting sicker people than it doesn’t infect.

I grew up in NYC and lived there for a few decades. I wouldn’t wear a mask outside there either. Maybe on the subway.
