I lurk in a Facebook group of medical professionals and this question came up. The feeling was that people at places like Lake of the Ozards are just being selfish, but the protests are “necessary” so that’s different. I don’t get it…
for myself I think my chance of death is 1 in 1000. My husbands chance of death is a bit higher. But what is my chance of death in a car wreck or any other means. for my kids even less so. What concerns me more is the stigma that is attached at this point to getting this (In March noone really knew how much it was spreading). If I get it, it means that I have been a “Bad” person for leaving my house and living my life. Having to let those I came in contact with, that I have it. My employer being annoyed if I get sick enough that I cant work.
My D17 is having major stomach issues. She has always had a bad stomach. Before Covid, it would solely be thought of as Gastro. (which she is going to see). But I had her take a Covid test yesterday to be 100% sure. Which is pretty easy to do here in GA. Just go to CVS.com pick your closest CVS and sign up. Self Swabbing. She had my husband go with her. But the wait time is still 2-4 days for results. This is where we need more accurate rapid testing. I believe this is what may have happened to the private school grad party here. The kid who threw the party was sick and got the test, but not the results until a day after the party, why else would the parent have ever allowed it if they were positive already. It baffles me that even with suspecting it they allowed it. I almost think the kids knew what they were doing and were hoping to get it, get over it, and then have some form of immunity going forward, plus a large social group to hang out with over the summer
That topic does not belong in this thread because the subject of the protest aren’t related to CV-19. The prior protest at State Capitols were, as the protest were about issues directly related to CV-19. Ditto the partying in Missouri.
I’m sure you can start a thread about the protests taking place now over the killing of George Floyd.
Just an aside, I watched a bit late last night before I went to sleep and I saw that most people had masks on in both NYC and DC.
Also, I’m sure there will be outbreaks of cases and deaths from CV-19 because of this.
I’m glad I did too, but I didn’t beat the odds by overcoming bad death odds for my tumor. I beat the odds by getting a generally survivable brain tumor. Others I got close to socially while waiting for radiation weren’t so fortunate. They’re not here to see Covid.
My mom was unfortunate enough to get a bad cancer. She beat the one year survival rate of 18%, but couldn’t beat the 5 year survival rate of 4%. I was hoping she could since she wasn’t a smoker or heavy drinker. I gave credit to that for her beating the one year odds. Interestingly enough with my mom, she was the healthiest of her 6 siblings. She didn’t smoke - 3 do. She ate better than they do. She was in a bike club and rode regularly. She managed the badminton club and played regularly. She hiked and camped with us. She broke her wrist once ice skating. No one in her genetic line has had cancer that we know about.
How, exactly, does one draw the short straw?
The best way of beating anything is to not get it.
If I were to get it, then I’d let my mind consider the odds. Like some others, I’ve never had the flu (knowingly) even working in a public high school - yet my lad, if he had it, is the one who got symptoms and has continuing lung issues even though his wife never got anything.
You also asked about other relatives. FIL, who we’re going to see this coming month, would have roughly a 99.9% of dying if he got it. He’s turning 92, only has one lung from his youth, and has significant heart issues. He could die any day from the heart issues and no one would blink an eye. But in the meantime he’s outside daily fishing, and in season, hunting turkeys/deer. He’s been helping to fix a seawall at his cabin, impressing DIL with what he can do. He’s not a couch potato, but even he knows his odds and talks about it. He’s not ready to die - esp from this. He’d prefer the heart attack in the woods.
There’s a reason we’re 100% isolating for two weeks before going to see him.
The best way to beat the odds is to not catch it.
I support freedom of assembly (expressing First Amendment rights) for Americans, even during a pandemic, whether I agree with the protesters (protesting against police brutality) or not (protesting against stay-at-home orders). I’m definitely concerned the protests will result in more cases of COVID-19.
@emilybee, the reasons for the protest don’t belong in this thread, but the mass gatherings in multiple cities do.
I await your helpful concerned post when one of the protesters is diagnosed with Covid.
Med school lad texted us last night about the current protests in his area. According to him originally they started out peaceful and all was well, but then out of state anarchists came and changed it to a riot. Quite honestly their goal is not likely the same thing the protesters want (justice for all). Their goal is chaos and they probably don’t care if it’s viral or any other source. Hopefully they don’t succeed.
From some headlines I’ve been reading, it seems what’s going on in his area seems to be going on elsewhere too. A few nasty “leaders” start a riot when the main group wanted a peaceful protest. It’d be interesting to see if the “nasty leaders” are local to their area or transported in for a different cause.
I worry about med school lad because he lives on a main street. His bedroom is ground floor and fronts the street (lots of noise he’s learned to sleep through). If the rioters move to his specific area and start fires, I shudder. Where they are happening, I’m sure other mamas are shuddering.
I’ll admit my humanness and say I wouldn’t feel bad at all if one of the nasty leaders caught it and was knocked around a bit by it.
I’ll even admit I’d feel very sorry if one of the oodles of peaceful masked protesters or police/national guard members caught it.
You won’t find helpful concern from me. I already stated there will be outbreaks and deaths because of them. There will definitely be community spread from these events.
But, to me, since the issue behind these protest are not related to anything Covid-19, I won’t address anything else about them on this thread.
I suggest if you want to discuss them further you should to start a thread about them.
Second night of patio dining allowed in IL and H is happy with the sales.
Another strong carry out night, combined with a full patio brought the sales up & close to projections (pre-COVID).
It’s a little unnerving to be so dependent on the weather. No tent! Cannot move people inside!
But the strong sales cheered everyone.
He said there was some FOH staff grumbling about having to wear masks. Obviously, guests are not masked, and the FOH staff needs to approach the table often — as guests are talking & laughing.
Some guests would mask up when entering the restaurant to use the restroom, but most did not bother.
My opinion, It’s going to get really bad in places where these people live.
“Most of those eating, strolling and sunning on the boardwalk Friday shunned masks. “I work in a Covid hospital and I don’t care,” said Brandy Unger, who said she is a nurse at WellSpan York Hospital in Pennsylvania. “It’s the flu.”
Her husband, Hunter Unger, a mechanic, said, shrugging, “I work on all kind of random people’s cars, and eh.”
We enjoyed an outdoor patio lunch yesterday and it was delightful. Never been so happy to go out to lunch. It helps that the weather was excellent. We wore our masks when first seated and then to go to the restroom. It is unfortunate that everything is so dependent on the weather.
Schools in mild climates will certainly have an easier time going back. When students and even classes can be held outside for much of the year, that will help
I would say that the rioting, let’s call it what it’s actually turned into, absolutely has just as much relevance in this thread as other things that are discussed regarding large groups of people, social distancing, mask use, singing, yelling, etc.
If we can discuss churches and their choires singing as dangerous, why can’t we discuss large groups of people in multiple cities in each other’s faces shouting?
If we can discuss crowds on beaches why can’t we discuss crowds fighting, burning and looting.
I know it’s not a popular topic for many but if other groups can be discussed why does this one get a pass?
Some pretty dire predictions regarding K-12 school funding as state tax revenues decline due to high unemployment rates, with additional federal assistance being uncertain.
Additional details on school lunch programs facing an uncertain future with increased costs, and need for additional government relief.
There was a family high school graduation party on my street, I think. Backyard. Maybe 20 people. Grandma died last year, the 2 adult daughters and maybe some of their kids still live in the house, but there were 8 cars that arrived with guests.
People are starting to come out and play.
A local restaurant announced they were closing for good this weekend saying the landlord wouldn’t renegotiate their lease. H and I are disappointed as this was a place we really liked. It was always full before Covid. Of course we don’t know the details of the negotiations but we have to wonder what is going through the landlord’s mind. That building is now likely to sit empty for quite some time. Isn’t some income better than no income?
On another note, we also have observed many outdoor parties this weekend, with lots of cars and few masks. People do seem to be trying to stand further apart than before but not 6 feet. People seem to have decided it is ok if it is outside.
So go ahead and discuss it here to your hearts content.
I don’t think it belongs on this thread for the reasons I have stated, other than what I’ve already said. So, I won’t be discussing it here.
I was pretty disgusted by the riots, especially when I saw an young man being interviewed by a reporter - screaming/spitting into the reporter’s face and the microphone. All of those people packed together screaming and chanting is everything we want to avoid. What happened to state rules about no more than X number of people for a gathering. I don’t even know why people are allowed to gather and protest now when people can’t attend churches or go to schools.
I personally think our government is not acting responsibly - I don’t care why people are protesting, but it is illegal to riot and loot those stores, put those people in jail.
I am a minority, but at this point I am disgusted by what I am seeing.
True @oldfort. The jails here were emptied of criminals with lesser crimes. They are now being filled again with these rioters. So there goes any COVID precautions to protect the criminals in jail. Although, letting the criminals out early may have much to do with the thievery, vandalism and arson running amok.
