Coronavirus May 2020 - Observations, information, discussion

And these business owners what to get liability waivers so when their employees get sick and die they can’t sue.

If it’s so safe why would they even need something like that?

I’ll give you a hint - they know what they are asking their employees to do is not safe.

People in the Northeast are being more cautious? I’m not seeing it. I hope I’m wrong, I truly do, but I see NJ making a huge mess with the reopening of parks this weekend.

Useless for you, maybe, but not useless for him.

Unless you change the gloves between every package, gloves are the same as hands. Better to use hand sanitizer often.

We are heading in the direction of losing both, and blaming each other for it.

Actually, those who prefer that redistribution go toward those who already have the most have been getting what they want over the last few years, and COVID-19-related events will probably accelerate the trend. The PPP that was supposedly for “small” businesses has given out considerable money to some much larger businesses than what most people consider “small”.

Today was the first day masks are required in San Diego County. My husband went out this morning for some groceries and stopped for doughnuts. Everyone in the grocery was wearing a mask. But at the doughnut shop, there was an unmasked mother and child, and another big guy. My husband (being my husband) made some sarcastic comment about the new law. The mother said she didn’t know about it, and the big guy (with the underlying condition of obesity) ignored him.

Our beaches are staying open because people were behaving properly for the most part. But one popular cliffs neighborhood had been overrun by hordes of noisy partying unmasked families and young people, playing loud music until late hours and leaving behind trash. The police were going to be out in force last night; not sure if it helped.

So it’s one thing to say reopen as much as feasible with masks and social distancing. It’s an entirely different situation to enforce it. The same people who are saying “why should I stay at home if a few old people in nursing homes will catch it” will say, “why should I wear a mask and stay apart.”

The attitude of “not my problem” connected to “I don’t care” will be a major issue.

The elderly… and people of color. 'Nuff said.

While out walking, the only groups I see not distancing are construction workers and gardeners who are still gathering in groups in the shade. No masks.

I’m in Maine, and we began the first of a four phase reopening today. The first phase allows hair salons to reopen, as long as the stylists have PPE and there is only one masked customer per stylist in the shop. I can’t imagine which salons are ready to do this today. They are also reopening golf courses, guided outdoor activities, including boating for 10 or fewer people, and construction sites, as long as workers have PPE. You can also take your dog to the groomer, wash your car, and attend a worship service as long as it is a drive-in.

Out of staters can come back, but they have to self-quarantine for 14 days. I have no idea how that will work with hotels and campgrounds. Tourism is a major part of the economy here.

Clearly, our governor is trying to alleviate economic distress (this is a very poor state anyway) without increasing the number of cases. There is no ideal way to do this. Covid-19 causes suffering. Unemployment causes suffering. Suffering is going to happen no matter what states do.

H is a manager in a restaurant and it’s pretty clear the 2 managers are highly motivated to work and try to save the business.

He is constantly talking numbers and wondering how long they will be able to hang on with just curbside pick up and delivery.

He is chewing it over and over in his head, trying to piece together what re-opening will look like, and if it will be enough. Will people come in? Will the patio help us? What will we do this winter?

He and the other manager know they are screwed if the restaurant goes out of business. Experience has taught them you don’t just waltz into an equivalent position in a serious economic downturn. Like a lot of restaurant people, it’s all they have ever done for a living.

The owners are very LET’S RE-OPEN and view the closure extending to the end of May as an over-reaction. I think everyone understood March and April. We are in Illinois.

H says the employees getting UI want to stay home. What is there to come into work for? 4-5 hours of carry out? They don’t need many people in the FOH.

However, the BOH is where the rubber hits the road. Everyone but the Chef and Sous Chef are undocumented and therefore ineligible for UI.

H is very sympathetic to their plight. He says, but my people NEED to work. They have kids to feed.

Interestingly, in my state, non-Hispanic whites are more represented among the Covid deaths (75%) than in the general population (68%).

There is very low risk in getting covid outdoors. People need to be able to get outside.

You need to keep in mind that even when the flu vaccine is only “somewhat effective,” vaccinated individuals who go on to be infected with the flu tend to have much milder infections than the unvaccinated infected people do. If a COVID vaccine was developed, there is good reason to believe that vaccinated people would at least not die of it, and many (if not most) could avoid needing to be hospitalized. All of that would be HUGE in terms of the cost to society and our medical resources. As long as the vaccine is safe, it would be a world changing development whether or not it has a 100% efficacy.

Observing: today’s White House press briefing. 6 staffers sitting side by side without masks.

@suzyQ7 , I would really like to understand why you are so negative towards Floridians. This is not the first time you have posted negative things about us. You do realize that there are > 21 million Floridians, and they are not all the same - certainly we aren’t all “smug”. Perhaps you are not aware that many of us are following all social distancing guidelines. Additionally, even before the statewide stay-at-home order, many Florida counties and municipalities had local orders. Also, I have seen a number of theories that the large number of cases in southeast Florida can be attributed to the “NYers [who flew] down there and enjoyed some vacation…”.

Sadly, I couldn’t agree more. I should have said “equitable redistribution.”

?‍♀️

Also, if a vaccine substantially reduces the risk of hospitalization, death, long term lung damage, etc., then people will be more confident going back to normal activity such as eating at restaurants, going to barber shops, traveling, going to get non-emergency/urgent medical services, etc…

“Open everything up and let the unlucky die or suffer long term disability” will not restore the economy, because many people will limit their economic activity due to virus fears. But “we have treatment and/or vaccine that make the risk of dying or suffering long term disability much lower” would make more people willing to return to normal economic activity.

Everyone who has a driver’s license is not eligible to vote (green card holder, some felons, those under 18), so I doubt it is automatic. Many states give DL to those who are in the country without documentation (but they don’t get a Real ID star on theirs). You have to elect to register to vote.

I do not provide my info to anyone who asks. The forms at the dentist ask for SSN, and they do not get it from me (or my kids, who have been trained not to give it out with a reason, and that reason usually has to do with obtaining credit). I’m not providing official data to authorities. If my dentists wants to require proof of a vaccination they can do so, but then I can choose another dentist. No one can go to the doctor’s office and see if they’ve been vaccinated without my permission (or now that they are adults, their permission).

I apologize for painting everyone with a broad brush. There are Florida posters in these threads that seem to relish in talking about how they don’t follow the rules and how its worked out for them. I guess they are not wrong - but you are also not wrong. Florida was very late in implementing stay at home orders and there are many loopholes. Again, at the end of the day, they were not wrong. That said, its hard to understand how the government would have know that - it could have turned out REALLY badly because of the elderly population.

Up here, I feel that people have been really locked up and following the rules for so many weeks - yet because the spread was already rampant in the community before mid-March- our numbers are astronomical. Its frustrating. Plus you get to do your social distancing while enjoying the sunny weather
