Coronavirus May 2020 - Observations, information, discussion

I hadn’t heard you could work for other states as a tracker. Interesting. But I’d rather work for my own community. I was on a Zoom call with our mayor earlier this week, and he said we aren’t ready to hire yet.

One of the reasons behind the differences between that NYT data and state’s individual data has to do with to which date numbers are added. So in Ohio, they will add the reported cases to the day in which they figure out the person first had symptoms. That gives a very different curve, and also means that it takes a week or two until the number of new cases for any particular day is as accurate as they can make it.

Most states, however, are in worse condition than that predicted by the IHME back in April (when they predicted 68,000 dead total).

@catahoula If you reduce the infection rate below the recovery rate, you get rid of the virus. Basically, if most people who have COVID 19 are infecting, on average, fewer than one person before the are cured, eventually you will have no cases left.

We have a drive in theater near us. It opened for the season on Friday. The line to get in was way long even an hour before they opened. They sold last night and tonight (I should add…both nights the temps have been COLD).

They usually have two cars between polls but now are having only one. This creates a nice large space between cars. Concession is open…they take your order and deliver to your car. You have to wear a mask if you leave your car. All employees are wearing masks.

They have employees on the grounds enforcing the rules. Apparently there were no issues.

I think this is going to be a busy summer.

The owner said she has received calls from 12 high schools about graduations. She will donate her space to them if they can work out the times.

I’m nervous about a “drive in” graduation in our case, which would be a lot of driving and not much space to park, and maybe then some kind of driving promenade. It seems poorly thought out, including in-person giving of diplomas (I’d be OK popping the trunk to receive it).

I know how these kids drive! And, there is economic diversity meaning some kids won’t have cars or be able to get there without the usual school bus.

Also, when I weigh the environmental impact of the driving, plus the risk of a car accident from rowdy teens all in the same place, vs. the theoretical benefit of the high school commencement ceremony (which will be absent the usual band playing, speeches, and other attractions) - I don’t fall on the in-favor side, even as a teacher of many seniors and a parent of a senior.

@Tigerle and others - I will try to buy sunchokes!

And, you are probably right that my DS20 was a bit wimpy about the pain (especially being sick).

Ha, @fretfulmother , I haven’t used the word wimpy about your son and wouldn’t dare to - I’m a fainter myself! I have fainted at the dentist and having blood drawn, and also when my own dad did something neurological to me with needles and electricity, which is when he made the observation. HCPs can cope, but they are always very grateful when I tell them beforehand so they can make sure I am seated well or even lay me down.

I thought the corona throat swab was pretty bad myself, and was worried about my kids, but they didn’t mind at all, whereas I gag so hard I almost throw up and can’t stop myself from gagging and coughing in the doctor’s (masked) face. I was embarrassed but the doctor just said people have different throats.

@fretfulmother

The drive in graduations here are being very specifically defined. Each set of parents and the graduate are allowed ONE space at the drive in…that’s it. The teens won’t be permitted to drive themselves (they weren’t allowed to do that at our regular graduation because of parking limitations…and yes…someone checked).

Our drive in is open for movies…same protocol and rules will apply. Folks will be spread two cars apart instead if the usual one car apart. If masked, they can sit on the hood or trunk to their car. No lawn chairs. A slide show will be done on the big screen, and speakers will be there one at a time. Pictures of grads will be shown on the screen as their names are called.

Around here, our HS admins and counseling staff spent all day Friday delivering caps and gowns, and lawn signs to each HS senior. This way, they can put on their caps and gowns, and take pictures.

In our area, HS classes are under 200 students. I would agree, this might be more challenging with a huge HS class.

I am not sure what your objection to this is. It’s a nice and creative way, with SD, and care to get this group together for one last time with their families.

As a parent with a graduate this year (not HS…professional school), I wish this was possible for my kid.

P.S. our high school records every music concert. It will be easy to have the instrumental and vocal groups choose a favorite piece or two to be part of the slide show. They also have pomp and circumstances recorded from last year which would actually include this year’s seniors playing in the ensemble.

A long road ahead for NYC.

People should consider the state income tax rate of the state they want to work for. Rather than a high-tax state, perhaps one of the states with no income tax at all? Or at least work for your own state, where at least the state income tax would benefit where you live.

^Ha, yeah, don’t work for Maine…

Happy Mother’s Day to the moms. A friend posted on Facebook that she feels grief as she wonders when she’ll be able to spend time in person with her children and grandchildren. I feel grief for this reason, too.

@thumper1 Thanks for this info. I am passing it along, and I hope our hs will consider this. We are pretty close.

I got a sweet card from DD yesterday. This morning she called. But the best…she sent me a text telling me she got me THE best Mother’s Day gift…a large container of Clorox Wipes! Better than a bouquet of flowers.

My apologies. It’s only the CV-19 tech swat team who can be from out of state in NY.

I’d be very careful about going to work in NY if you’re from out of state. Cuomo has confirmed the first responders who rushed to NYS to assist will be responsible for paying NYS income tax.

As for sun chokes…if you have a propensity for intestinal bloating or intestinal luminal distention be very careful. Inulin, is a fructan, a substances which is not well tolerated by some people. If you ever find yourself thinking ‘good grief, why has my waist band just shrunk and why did I go from a normal belly to looking like I’m 6 months pregnant in the span of a few minutes’ check out FODMAP.

Some troubling data coming out of some countries that started to loosen restrictions. South Korea, Germany, France, and China among others are all reporting spikes in new cases. Seems many people think loosening restrictions means life is back to normal and aren’t continuing to follow hygiene and social distancing recommendations. It makes me worried what will happen here when more of our restrictions get lifted.

Governor Cuomo’s [NYS.gov website](Statement From Secretary to the Governor Melissa DeRosa on NY ON PAUSE Executive Order) said this isn’t true. Only the legal authority to institute these policies has been extended to June 6th. NY on Pause expires on May 15th.

@gwnorth , this is exactly what I’m observing in my European country, It seems that unless you lock people inside their houses, they throw all caution (and all existing rules!) to the wind.
I just don’t get why people are still fighting with with supermarket monitors and train attendants about masks. It’s the law now. Period.

I got on an elevator at the train station which has a clear sign outside that it’s one person at a time unless people belong together in a group. When I politely asked the man behind me to respect that rule, he shoved me inside with his shoulder. Wasn’t wearing his mask either and shouted back at me when I told him what I thought of him.

No attendants or police in sight, as is completely usual. If they don’t start policing the social distancing and mask wearing and hand out hefty fines soon, this will end up being the disaster we thought we’d avoided.

People are just so stupid.

Read that the South Korea nightclub debacle traced 40 infections to one single man who visited 5 nightclubs in one evening.

I’m still livid/dumbfounded/upset/shocked that my dad told my uncle, “Hope you have a good turnout at church tomorrow!” in front of my sister. OMG. If an educated former professor thinks that way, we’re in trouble. I have an “inside source” who told me that only 16 people showed up last week. I’ll have to ask her about today’s service.
