I don’t think Cuomos new order will withstand legal challenge. How could a private entity be responsible for public space? If it is, then it should set up tables, stop traffic- take over the street if it wants. Charge admission too, for the use of the sidewalk. Maybe it could ban those under 21 from using the sidewalk? Silly.
H had to run into a print shop today to get plans he emailed in for a client. I rode along for fun, plus we were going to stop at the market for chocolate covered almonds and Brazil nuts. We skipped the (indoor) market seeing how crowded the parking lot was. There were plenty of cars on the road from start to end. On our way we passed several drive thrus for fast food that had lines out the wazoo. Chick Fil A’s was the longest. Arby’s was probably second longest.
I wondered if I had missed a news story and it was Drive Thru Thursday. If people are at work, that part is hard to tell. They’re definitely out for a drive getting lunch along the way.
Private businesses are required to shovel their public sidewalks, in many places. In this case, I believe the people on the sidewalks are being served food and drinks from the restaurants and bars, so the businesses can refuse to serve patrons who don’t follow the rules, just as bars are required to refuse service to children and drunk and disorderly adults.
Good point, however as someone advocating earlier stated, businesses should keep their mouth shut and not refuse service to someone breaking the rules because they might be shot and killed, like that one isolated incident when a business tried to enforce the mask wearing rule…(sarcasm)
If the business won’t refuse service to those breaking the law, then they will lose their liquor license immediately per Cuomo’s EO. Possibly their license to operate, also.
“The state acknowledges troubling trends in recent COVID-19 data. In a marked shift in tone from last week’s briefing, Ducey and Dr. Cara Christ, director of the Arizona Department of Health Services, pointed to concerning trends of increasing cases and increasing percent of positive cases out of all tests. “The trend is headed in the wrong direction,” Ducey said of confirmed cases over time.”
“Key figures to watch”
“The percentage of positive tests is increasing. This is the opposite direction from White House reopening criteria. The percentage of positive tests out of all tests per week increased to 15% last week, from 6% a month ago, to 9% three weeks ago, to 12% two weeks ago. When the state decided to reopen in mid-May, that number had been trending down, but it has been increasing ever since.”
By the way… Percentage of positives is a useless measure if the testing criteria only allow testing those with CLI and people potentially exposed to someone with CLI. As we know from the years past, by this time, the herd has had their flus, colds, etc. so the only virus that most likely circulates causing CLI is actually Covid. Hence, % of positives will go up if the criteria are not expanded because only people who get tested are those with Covid. You need to look at the complete picture.
Also, when our paper screams, “A big uptick in new fatalities - 1X new deaths have been registered since yesterday,” one has to take that with a grain of salt. A quick visit to the dashboard only shows 1 new death in the past day… The other 1X- 1 deaths are backlog reporting.
Cities can own sidewalks and allow them to be used as sidewalk cafes. When we instituted sidewalk cafes in our town a few years ago, the restaurants had to submit plans for proposed table layouts showing that there were still the required sidewalk widths and owners are absolutely required to clean their piece of sidewalk, even for messes that are not their fault.
In the photos I’ve seen of NYC, the restaurants had put out tables that they claimed were for customers to wait for takeout, and then they were allowing people to eat at the tables.
Random observation on my street this morning: Man wearing only swim trunks (and I think) a face mask walking down the sidewalk, carrying a huge trombone.
I am still doing once a week grocery shopping. That is my only outing other than walking across the street to see the sunset 2-3 times per week. I usually arrive at the store a little after 8:00 a.m. Mask compliance is still pretty good at my Walmart Neighborhood Market - though Slow Alice, my checker, ALWAYS has her mask below her nose and today it was only covering about half her mouth. She needs a new mask - I think her elastic is all stretched out.
What I don’t understand about the non-mask wearers is their failure to SD. If you aren’t going to wear a mask, at least stay away from me. The maskless also seem to be the least observant of the aisle direction markers as well.
I’m in Florida. We are closing on our new condo next week which we bought furnished. The earliest I could schedule a donation truck from Salvation Army to do a pick up was July 8th. We are keeping some of the furniture but need to get rid of a lot of what they had as well. The person at the Salvation Army told me that, because they were shut down for so long, there is a backlog of pick ups. I am hopeful they don’t have to shut down again. Otherwise I am going to be in trouble a week later when the movers come to take our things to the new place. COVID just seems to add an extra layer of stress to everything.
Our state’s (WA) testing criteria have been expanded only a few days ago, but the public (and doctors) do not seem be aware of that yet. Do not follow other states.
What area of the United States that is currently experiencing an uptick is only testing people that have covid-like symptoms?

What state has gobs of well people lining for testing? Really, who is going to get tested voluntarily? We see asymptomatic positives only in populations that are required to be tested by their workplace. I don’t know a single person who has been tested.
Have you got a spare you could maybe give her? Maybe one of the ones with the shaped part over the nose, instead of pleats? She probably doesn’t have a ton of money to go out and buy a new mask.
@Sybylla - I got tested voluntarily. No symptoms either, but the daily texts from the city health department asking more people to get tested so they would have better data got to me. Plus, they specified that it was a less invasive test (just to the top of your nose). They’ve also given out self administered cheek swab tests at restaurants and bars. It ran like a well oiled machine when I went to get tested.

Interesting, these people are not practicing SD, so it has built in bias in the results, no? Helpful though, like the protesters, I really want to see the results of these big groups of mostly young healthy people related to hospitalization rates. It really could help with a bigger picture.
