Coronavirus thread for June

There was an article in this weeks NYT that spending by the richest people is way down and normally in a recession it is the exact opposite.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/17/upshot/coronavirus-spending-rich-poor.html

Our spending has gone way down too. Grocery bills are way up, as is my Amazon spending on COVID related things. But I just paid the lowest Mastercard bill that I can ever remember paying.

We have been spending about the same in different areas. Our grocery/food bill has more than doubled with the kids home, as well as ordering out twice a week. the biggest expense is our eldest being home. She has nagging , but not critical medical stuff that we are taking care of now that she is home and some of that is out of pocket. Never spent too much on clothing but that has gone down as well. I only got my hair done once 4 times a year as well as nails as well, so not much change there. Less money spent on travel, more money on little things for my husbands cooking/grill obsession.
mostly we have been trying to put away money since we dont know if either of us will lose our jobs at some point. For the first time I feel like my DH is safe and I am not. i work for a small software company and revenue is down. Also 50% of my job involved working trade shows and recruiting new partners. That is very hard with no travel, and also with the economy down., and probably no shows until there is a vaccine. Trying to get creative . AT the same time we have two in college and so far it doesnt look like they will be generous with aid. I guess we could keep them home and save on Room (board is costing about the same!), but they really need to be there and not here come fall even if classes are online.
Interesting convo with a friend today. Up until recently she was very much afraid of the virus and sheltered in place as much as possible with some SD outdoor events. She is still cautious, but no longer afraid, and feels like she would not die if she got it now. She is willing to see some friends now and maybe sit outdoors at a restaurant and go into some stores (with mask).

Such a simple solution yet so many are up in arms that they need to wear a mask.

@4kids4us

Same in our area. :frowning:

Tulsa. Enough said.

Seattle. Portland. NYC. Enough said.

Omg talk about irrational fear.

Our spending has plummeted. We tend to have a fair amount of travel-related unreimbursed professional expenses every summer (no longer tax deductible!), and that’s 100% gone this year.

Groceries have gone up, restaurants down, but overall a small net savings. The amount our spending on gasoline has dropped is kind of crazy, though.

Smaller crowd than expected in Tulsa. Maybe the Covid message broke through to some of them.

Before the everyone-works-from-home order came down, on March 16, I bought gas twice per month (on average). I had filled the tank on March 2 or 3. I didn’t buy gas again until June 3.

Our spending went down at the start, before we found sources of not stocked up food. Our CC was our lowest in many years in April. Now it is same or higher. Less choices for food, less ability to shop sale prices or compare, prices going up in general. Plus I’m back to stocking up for the fall. Also I spent some money on online courses for myself this summer. Gas is low because of prices, but we still drive to shore home most weeks. We aren’t saving on eating out, hair, gyms or anything like that because we never did those things much or at all.

You mean this?

During a pandemic, the expectation should be that our leaders, lead by example…

Were any of those inside?

The protests I’ve observed at least had some people wearing masks, but I certainly am looking at the news to see what the COVID consequences of those protests will be.

The Tulsa thing? Well, if infected folks are there, we will see evidence of that in a couple of weeks. Maybe they get lucky and none of the attendees are infected. I actually hope that’s the case.

@socaldad2002 If only that were so.

Our spending is way down. We even got a new driveway and our spending over the last 3 months is still way down. A little more on groceries, but we’ve never eaten out much. More to charity. Nothing on travel or clothes.

Our expenses are way down. Food is up a bit since we have D home, plus we’ve been splurging a little here and there since we haven’t been able to go out to eat. We’ve been donating more than usual (taking turns; each family member gets to choose an organization to get donation). We’ve always had our hairdresser come to our home and do everyone at once, and she has continued coming (wears a mask; we feel comfortable having her, as does she) so that is the same. Gas way down. We are looking at doing some home improvements (new fence, patio) with the savings we’ve experienced.

I’ve been inspired to look in my fridge and freezer and use (or, unfortunately, in a few cases, throw away) food and try to limit buying more until I’ve dealt with the old stuff.

I recalled, since my first post on this topic this afternoon, that I’ve had one big purchase that I didn’t anticipate but had to make: a new laptop. And I’m planning another big project that I should have done a few years ago: getting new gutters.

No where to spend - travel, hair, botox, eating out, transportation, clothes, shows/concerts. Ok, spending on wine has gone up, food is up, but my credit card bills have been very low.
