I find it comical to listen to those who have been whining for months that we should never have shut down or we needed to open up a few months ago and now have their panties in a twist about the protesters. None of these people were concerned in the least with the protesters storming state capitals because they couldn’t get a hair cut or grass seed. Liberate Michigan! They are outside protesting!
It’s not nearly as deadly as we’ve been told. Nothing but a bad flu. We don’t close down for the flu, masks don’t work, being outside is fine, it’s mass transit that’s the problem, blah, blah, blah.
Oh, and let’s not forget - no testing for me - I’m not going to get a swab stuck up my nose. Now complaining that test sites are being shut down and that the protesters should all be tested! What’s next - advocating they should be tracked with an app?
Well, we are sure open now, so you should all be quite happy.
A European study documents a strong statistical link between genetic variations and Covid-19:
“Genes May Leave Some People More Vulnerable to Severe Covid-19:
Geneticists have turned up intriguing links between DNA and the disease. Patients with Type A blood, for example, seem to be at greater risk.”
Here’s another article, about the newly identified Covid-related pediatric inflammatory syndrome, that suggests there may be a genetic vulnerability that makes Black children more susceptible to the syndrome (just as Asian children are more susceptible to Kawasaki disease):
Agree. I keep hearing Dr. Fauci say he hopes that we will be ready for the fall and he seems more optimistic we will be in terms of ability to track and trace. I hope he is right. It is very concerning we don’t have it in place now.
Exactly. We were told our state would have rapid testing for dental patients and no such thing exists or is in the plans as of now, but dentists have started reopening. That’s a clear example where we should have testing in place.
I’m not an expert in this but my understanding is that we have tests but most are not the rapid type and so people who test could be waiting a long time for results and meanwhile expose others to the virus while they wait. We have not switched to the type of massive, rapid testing that is used elsewhere to control spread but are still using it for suspected cases only. This won’t catch those who contribute to asymptomatic spread, for example. For contact tracing, you need very rapid testing and massive amounts of it as well. Just a few events could expose many people and so I can see where we need tons and tons of testing ready to go.
Airports for sure should test incoming passengers from abroad and outgoing on domestic flights. Pilots and flight attendants should be regularly tested. I wish they could test students and teachers in schools. Some colleges plan to do so (some with more money). We are not where we we were told we would be in terms of numbers of tests being conducted, type of test (rapid), and how the test is used (to manage and prevent spread, not only to diagnose). From what I have read and heard we are not even anywhere close to being where we should in this in most of the country.
I saw videos from Oakland last night. The protestor kids ended up protesting the curfew by having an outdoor dance party. On the one hand, dance parties are non-violent. On the other hand, we’d better hope covid doesn’t spread outside.
It’s pretty easy to get tested free in the SF Bay Area.
Most of the anti-lockdown protests were small. One of the largest anti-lockdown protests happened in Michigan and involved about one thousand people. One of the anti-lockdown protests in Ohio attracted no more than 75 people. If the Floyd-related protests were of a similar size, I would have less concerns about transmission. If millions of people protest the treatment of Floyd and thousands protested the lockdowns, the transmission risk is orders of magnitude greater with the current protests.
Exactly. which is why all racist actions need to stop immediately. Problem solved (I’m going to keep sounding flip about this until the point becomes clear.) If your house is burning down, you don’t ask the firefighter if they’ve been tested.
Just. Halt. Racist. Violence. It is the root cause of the protests.
The protests are likely spreading the virus. That makes my heart ache as do the reasons they are protesting. It is an all around tragic situation in my opinion and very concerning.
Size out the crowd matters. It’s feasible for 75 people to spread outdoors and maintain social distancing. It’s probably impossible for 7500 people to gather and maintain appropriate social distancing.
Dutch Coronavirus Study: Children are Not Big Spreaders (Reuters) A study by the Netherlands’ National Institute for Health (RIVM) published on Wednesday concluded that children under the age of 12 play little role in transmitting the new coronavirus. The study in the country’s leading medical journal Nederlands Tijdschrift Voor Geneeskunde followed the progress of the disease in 54 families, including 227 people in all. A possible weakness in the study is that the families studied may not have been representative of the wider Dutch population.
With Emergency Visits Down 42%, US Hospitals Reeling from COVID-19 (CIDRAP) In April, 42% less people visited emergency departments (EDs) across the United States than in April last year, according to data published today in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. This significant drop-off, which took place while most states had stay-at-home orders, translates to millions of dollars lost by US hospitals still fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, and Americans becoming at risk for worsening outcomes for non-COVID emergencies.
I went to the dentist this week. First day the were open. Their protocol was excellent. No, they didn’t have rapid testing…but I had to sign and date that list of questions asking me about Covid, symptoms, and where I had travelled or not. PPE was in full evidence. Hand sanitizer was at the door as I walked in…and if I hadn’t used it, the receptionist would have told me to do so. Masks required until the hygienist was fully garbed (including mask and face shield) and ready to work. No equipment that sprayed water at all. Disposable bowl for swishing mouth, with a suction that drew the stuff in. Anything held had a plastic sleeve on it (that was tossed after each patient). All tools have always been single use…so that didn’t change.
Depends what you call large. I believe 50 are now permitted at funerals here…in CT. But it might be more…those guidelines were relaxed last week.
But I’m not sure if calling hours have been reinstated at all. These would be particularly challenging for large crowds.
On June 20, it’s likely we will see more change.
In addition, outdoor graduation ceremonies are allowed starting in July with a 150 person limit…which means practically no schools will wait and do this. Plus all have already come up with alternate plans.
