Coronavirus thread for June

“Phase” is not one phase across the state. There is one country in Phase 1, a whole bunch in phase 3, and one county with zero Covid cases. Yes, zero Covid cases (that’s the county no one will travel to, Lol). The Governor is assessing the situation and makes decisions based on data, for sure, and reopening might be modified (as it has been done several times), but I don’t see us rolling anything back. The biggest concern is Yakima, the fruit bowl of our state. Per DOH dashboard, 30% of recent tests are coming back positive, while in the most populous county the recent rate is 2-4%.

What do you think is the range for an ‘average’ flu season death rate? Fauci is on record as saying it’s 0.1% (at the congressional panel where he spoke)…I even gave a more conservative range than that in my post.

@Mwfan1921, I apologize. I misread the flu death numbers which you posted, moving the decimal point in my brain. You’re perfectly right and I was wrong. A flu death rate of .05% to .1% is perfectly plausible.

I could have made it easier by putting a 0 in front of my decimal point! ?

I am in NC and our numbers are going up. We are currently in Phase 2, but with the recent spike I did see an article that indicated they were considering going back to Phase 1 but I do not believe that would go over well unless they could better explain the urgency/necessity to do so i.e., hospitals overwhelmed.

Sounds similar as what we are doing in NY. A slow reopening based on data. Hopefully, they will be very careful going into each new phase.

I drove up to Gander Outdoor in WI today to get my brother a box of ammo since we used his stock at the range last week.

Plenty of people there. No one wearing a mask. Not employees. Not customers (except me).

Ammo shelves near bare. Luckily there was some of what I needed.

Employee told me people are hoarding ammo. There’s no limit on the # of boxes, so people are buying more than they would in normal times. The bare shelves add to the urge to stock up.

He told me people know which day the delivery comes in, and are waiting.

Back in IL, stopped at Ace Hardware. Everyone has a mask on.

We went to two nurseries yesterday looking for a plant to welcome our new neighbors to the neighborhood. Ended up buying a bunch of perennials for the two containers I still have not filled. Nursery 1 was taking appointments to come in… one person per slot. I made two. Made sense for them because they have a very small footprint. Nursery 2 has 15 acres of plants… plenty of room for everyone to spread out. No appointment needed, but they made you stop and pick up a flyer with rules which everyone had to present at the checkout. No flyer, no sale. Mask compliance was very high, even though most of the activity was happening outside.

I just don’t understand how they cannot open schools. Most parents work. Blue collar, health care and hospitality workers cannot work from home. Who is going to watch all these kids? Who is going to enforce that they sit at home glued to a computer on a bell schedule? How can these kids be left alone in the home? It’s just a mess and I don’t really have answers

There’s so much to consider on school reopening that perhaps it should have its own thread? Most of the posts seem to be discussing future potentials, not current observations.

@marilyn, There is a separate thread for school in the fall. I can’t link it on my phone, but if you search for covid and school in the fall it should come up.

@austinmshauri - would that be a college thread? People here (including teachers) are discussing elementary/middle/high school, I think. I’ve been skimming past all such posts on this thread since it’s not a factor in my life. It seemed like there is enough interest for someone to branch it off in the Parent Cafe for ongoing discussion.

@marilyn, The School in the Fall & Coronavirus thread is covering all schools/grades. It started as college, but the rules states are setting affect all levels of education so it’s morphed into a broader topic.

Why aren’t the protests mentioned as a cause for the increases in cases?

Posters, here’s the school reopening thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/2180028-school-in-the-fall-coronavirus.html#latest

To whoever was comparing Oregon and Georgia several pages ago – Georgia is almost 3 times a large as Oregon. AND Oregon is not testing. Second lowest to Idaho in the country last time I checked. Need to have symptoms or known exposure. Cases are low in Oregon, but the average per day has about tripled in the last week. We have no state mandate for mask-wearing. The largest county (where most of Portland is) is still in phase 0, however, when I go out to get groceries it’s all very busy. Lots of retail has reopened claiming to be essential because why not? And then, of course, huge protests every night for 2.5 weeks. I live in the most ethnically diverse part of the city and cases just keep rising in my zip code.

We are in Phase 2 here in western Virginia. We cautiously went out to dinner at a restaurant we frequent and know the precautions they’re taking. At this point I am still very cautious as a large segment of the population is choosing not to wear a mask and is almost aggressive in their attitude towards those who do. I had to go pick up a prescription today at Target. There were several large family groups (unmasked) that almost seemed to be intentionally blocking the ends of each aisle. Couldn’t go down an aisle and maintain social distance. Most places I have gone previously shoppers have complied with masks and social distancing. That was not the case today. We continue to have new cases emerge - I suspect in part due to the poultry processing plants.

@shuttlebus - one problem with Florida, Texas and Arizona is that they are not very transparent or forthcoming with their data. They all conflate virus (PCR) tests with antibody tests. Florida refuses to say how many cases and deaths are in nursing homes. How can we easily tell where the increases come from?

Could be protests, re-opening, surges in nursing homes, or work places, or a combination of all of the above.

What disturbs me is that it is happening when we thought that hot weather would provide a bit of a lull. Arizona is very dry, Florida very humid, and they are both having increases.

Rebekah Jones, who was fired from the Florida Department of Health when she refused to make data changes that she said would obfuscate things, has started her own dashboard: The tab for “impact” includes info about unemployment and grades for social distancing.

@CountingDown I’m really sorry for your loss. That is so hard, and being separated too.

@suzyQ7 - thank you for your advice - we followed it and had a lovely distanced visit with DS1 and DIL yesterday. In fact, they are back and are using our basement laundry (separate entrance) today. I also delivered noncontact lunch to them.
