Coronavirus: What are You doing ( if anything) to prepare/ What are you personally observing?

From Jetblue:

We also want to ensure you can book new travel with confidence. As such, we’re extending our temporary policy of no change or cancellation fees. This applies to bookings made 3/6-3/31 for travel through 9/8/20 across all fares (Blue, Blue Basic, Blue Plus, Blue Extra and Mint) and all JetBlue destinations. If you need to cancel your travel plans, we’ll credit the full amount as a JetBlue travel credit that’s valid for one year.

@milgymfam
Under AirBnB’s extenuating circumstances you can likely get a refund, which then stinks for the homeowner :frowning:

"Our extenuating circumstances policy covers our hosts and guests with eligible reservations who are being impacted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. We’re closely monitoring official guidance from local governmental and health authorities and the World Health Organization in order to support the health and wellbeing of our community in severely impacted areas. As the situation evolves, we will be continuously evaluating and updating this policy.

If your trip is covered by the policy, you will have the option to cancel your homes reservation or Airbnb Experience without charge. If you’re traveling from or hosting in a severely impacted area and we can recognize your location and reservation details as outlined below, you may be notified that your reservation automatically qualifies on the reservation details page. If your reservation is eligible under this policy but you do not have a notification, please contact us."

^You can say that since I went out and bought zinc lozenges after reading the thread. I am not worried for myself. I am not young but healthy without any underlying health issues. I just don’t want to be a carrier infecting other people. Some of them could be vulnerable.

What a difference a week makes. Went to Costco this afternoon and the area that holds water, toilet paper, paper towels and tissues was totally empty. No bleach wipes, no Lysol spray. Last week they had displays in front of the store but the shelves were filled.

Though I went out to dinner last night and lunch today and both places were busy as usual.

I went to Costco this afternoon (needed salmon for a dinner party tomorrow). They had a sign by the bottled water that said no more than 5 cases per membership. I got 2 cases, and there weren’t many left. Normally I bring a bottle from home and refill at the water bottle filling station at work. But that doesn’t seem so smart right now, so I will take a case of water to work. (And may start bringing 2 bottles from home - just kind of a pain to carry. No samples is true.
I didn’t look for Purell or Clorox stuff, but there appeared to be big “holes” in the cleaning stuff aisles, so I’m guessing it was slim pickings. I didn’t buy TP or paper towels, but I saw others buying them, so they must have been in stock.
I am hosting a party tomorrow, and I’m slightly worried about 2 guests just back from New Zealand, and he’s 80 or very close to it.
We don’t have much medicine at all at home. I guess I will see what’s still in stock when I go to the grocery store tomorrow.
Just funny - When I was getting the salmon I so wanted to lick my finger to get the bag open, but remembering all the “discussion” about how terrible that was made me refrain. They did have someone at the door of Costco holding out a package of wipes to clean the cart.

@1214mom i had the same thought when I was trying to get the bag open to put my chicken in. I could not get the bag opened. I put my fingers in the bag of Lysol wipes in my purse to moisten my fingers.

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Once again, let’s keep to the topic of this thread if you don’t want this entire thread merged. Examples of what goes here:
• My kids are not going on revisits
• My company is suspending travel
• On my trip to Costco…
• Responses/questions to on-topic posts that are also on-topic.

Things that go on the other thread:
• College XYZ (which has nothing to do with the poster) cancelled revisits
• Company XYZ which has nothing to do with the poster) suspends travel
• News stories

The above is not meant to be exhaustive, but are examples on posts that I have moved (where I should have outright deleted). Please do not message me or flag that I missed one; I’m citing the “best efforts” clause of ToS.

@somemom they actually tried that already, but neither Florida nor Pennsylvania are “severely impacted” and their booking was not covered.

Got a message today that a conference I was registered to attend in Nice France in May has been postponed until November. Who thinks this pandemic will resolve by November, the beginning of flu season in the northern hemisphere? I canceled my flights and the travel agency for my employer will “try” to get a refund.

Living in earthquake territory means many Californians already have some stockpiles of necessities at home. I did buy a few extra bottles of isopropyl alcohol to use on equipment at the gym. I also bought some extra dog food, since our dog has a delicate stomach and I worry the panicked hoarders will cause shortages. At some point the hoarding is a self fulfilling prophecy!

Just back from Trader Joe’s. There are no more wet wipes near the carts. People were stealing them all. They were still giving them out at the desk on request.

No more coffee carafes. Too many hands touching the pump.

At the hair salon, my gal had plenty of Clorox wipes. I’m glad she is in one of those small studio type salons, one customer at a time.

Yesterday I asked a staff person at Trader Joe’s if they had any more hand sanitizer. He said I was the 5th person who asked him that question yesterday.

He checked his inventory and told me the next shipment will arrive on Sun. He suggested I call before I show up. If they arrive, I am pretty sure they will be gone quickly…

I am healthy. Just flew back to Maine from Seattle on Wednesday evening. I was pleasantly surprised not to hear any coughing on either leg of my flight.

On Thursday afternoon, my husband complained that he felt achy and had a headache. This morning, he had a cough and fever. He called his doctor and explained his symptoms and then mentioned that I had just returned from Seattle. The doctor told him to stay home and wait for a phone call. A few minutes later, he got a call from an infectious disease specialist who interviewed him. They decided it was likely seasonal flu, and prescribed Tamiflu for everybody in the house.

Meanwhile, my mother, who lives in an independent senior living facility, has decided to move in with her companion and his daughter while this goes on. I think it’s a good call.

I haven’t done anything to prepare, but while out today I did swing down the cleaning aisle and it was pretty bare. I did pick up some Clorox Wipes and extra toilet paper. The Black Elderberry Sambucol I threw in my amazon cart 2 days ago is now unavailable. I have boxes of disposable gloves already from caregiving. We are lucky (?) that H works from home most days, and I am home almost all the time caring for my mom, so we have very little exposure to other people. I’ve canceled all appointments my mom had scheduled with doctors (routine, not necessary to her prescriptions or current health) and remain cautious but not too worried at this point.

So exactly how much hand sanitizer or alcohol or wipes do we really need??

Wouldn’t it depend on how long this goes on? I find myself using not that much in a day.

So… how much to start with. so as not to overdo it ?

On our local news tonight they did a segment on supplies. They reported that while the bigger markets, Trader Joe’s and Costco have empty shelves the smaller local markets seem to have plenty of inventory.
I always have a supply of toilet paper from Costco on hand. I’m not a hand sanitizer person but my D told me she has a few extra bottles. I might be in the minority but I don’t feel the need to have more than my normal supply of stuff on hand. My only new routine is I have a zip lock bag of bleach wipes in my purse. I wiped down the table at lunch and the ketchup bottle. I also wiped down my hands when I left the library. I think a lot of people are overdoing it. I will admit that I might feel differently if I lived in another area or traveled by public transportation. I would take precautions if I was flying.

I used about two pieces of hand wipes a day on average. I have a very simple life. I used two pieces of Clorox wipes when I was flying, each leg. I don’t use Clorox wipe much when I am home.

With 20+ confirmed cases in our province, and one of my son’s classmates father died while in China last month from Covid-19; He was fine when he left in January. They first thought it was a heart attack but now suspect the virus. with the wife and family here, they didn’t get an autopsy, nor have they released much information. may have the remains left there and a memorial here for him. Very sad. Not much happening except more sanitizer being purchased. Boys are off on spring break, so we won’t be out and about as much. But I have a conference to go to in a couple of weeks, thinking of cancelling our flight and driving the 7 hours. Neighboring cities have confirmed cases now. I am feeling a rising sense of panic as the cases are growing. Cleaning as usual.

I don’t think this violates TOS so I’m going to suggest that at some point in the future a moderator send this entire thread to some sort of historical archive. It really is a living history.

Back to topic: train parking lot very empty all week. Seems like more people are driving.
