Coronavirus: What are You doing ( if anything) to prepare/ What are you personally observing?

My kiddo is asking if she should come home now that the school makes all the classes online. I don’t know if they have figured out all the logistics yet (how to log in online, is there a conference call set up for discussion sessions where students can ask questions, etc… I have so many questions that she doesn’t have the answer just yet. I am hesitant to change her tickets. Her spring break is not until the last week of March.

The airlines are getting hammered. Some might go out of business. A European low cost carrier already did.

Airlines are the victims here, too. They certainly didn’t cause this mess.

I received an email from United that they would wave change fees.

I went for a walk around where I work today looking for Purell (thought it would be easier outside of NYC) in preparation for my HI trip. There was nothing at CVS or a grocery store. I then walked into Target without much expectation. They told me they only had travel size Purell (I grabbed 8). I felt lucky so I asked if they had any face masks. They said, “sure, right over there.” They had 3M N95 masks for $6.99. I bought 6 boxes. I feel like I should go buy some lottery tickets today.

Yes, Target had plenty of hand sanitizer this morning in a suburb of NYC. I went early to get Clorox wipes, settled for Target brand, and scored the limit of 6 per customer of 8 oz. hand sanitizer. Also had anti-bacterial soap which has been in short supply. Still don’t know what’s happening with S2’s wedding which is a week from Saturday but it’s sure not to be what it was expected to be.

This is getting really crazy. College admission tours and events for admitted students are being cancelled because of coronavirus.

Everyone is in good health at Williams College so far, but they are cancelling events. Here is a quote from their letter to the college community today.

“As part of our decision, we are also canceling Previews, our campus program for admitted students and families, which was scheduled to begin on April 20. There will also be no admission tours, info sessions or admitted student overnights during this time, all decisions comparable to those made by a number of other schools around the country.”

@doschicos, none of the people who booked conferences and meetings that got canceled asked for this either. None of the museums and schools and other things that have closed have asked for this either.

I don’t think people are asking for their money back. They are asking to take their trips later, when the crisis has passed.

Here we have a brand new pre-term baby. We can’t buy clorox wipes, bleach, antibacterial soap, hand sanitizer, lysol, etc. It is very frustrating because we need the wipes to wipe all the surfaces. We can wash with soap and water but when dd has to take baby to appointments they want her to use hand sanitizer before picking up the baby. Today she had to take him to the ER because of jaundice and that scares us a lot. She is searching now for hand sanitizer around the hospital. That would be great if we had any or could get any.

@TheGreyKing - Williams wants to keep outsiders out who may be infected. A lot of colleges are encouraging kids not to go home over the spring break.

@runnersmom - I am keeping my fingers crossed for you. No matter how many people are there, all it matters is to have the bride/groom and you.

Wouldn’t be surprised to ultimately see a government bailout for/of the airlines.

I wish people weren’t hoarding.

Face masks provide NO protection to people who do not have the virus. They provide some (although minimal) protection against the spread of the disease when worn by people who are infected; those people should not be out and about at all.

@oldfort - Yes, I understand. Just feeling bad for all those high school seniors trying to choose among colleges without those admitted student events which are so powerful in helping kids get a feel for the college.

Any leader of any institution today has to weigh what are reasonable precautions to keep everyone healthy vs. trying to keep everything as close to normal as possible to maintain the institution’s mission. Lots of tough choices! Not fun to have to make those decisions.

My company is imposing webex meetings for over 12 people.

@TheGreyKing - it is hard decision…at the same time, if I had to make a decision of keeping few thousand students healthy and continue to conduct classes vs having prospects visiting, I know what choice I would make.

I am sorry you have to deal with this. Sent you a PM.

One thing I’m having a tough time clarifying: if you cancel a flight booked March 1 or later, I understand the change fee is waived and you have 12 months to use the ticket. What I don’t know for sure is whether you can go anywhere and apply the credit (paying any difference in fare if applicable) or is it only for the original itinerary? I’m hoping for the former, of course.

I have plans to meet my kids in Jamaica in late April. We all bought our tickets March 2. If it’s not prudent to go, we’ll cancel but it’s unlikely we’d go to Jamaica in the next year whereas I’m sure we’ll all have occasion to fly elsewhere. We’re coming from different places so the airlines include American, United, Delta and JetBlue. The wording refers to “change” but it’s hard to know for 100% certainty that “change” refers to itinerary as well as date.

I just left Costco about an hour ago. I asked someone if there were any Clorox or Kirkland wipes and was told they had put some out an hour ago and there were already all gone.

One of my D’s lives in NYC and one of her clients is a city agency. She texted me today that the head of that agency has tested positively. My D will not be quarantined but it sounds like some of her co-workers may be told to work from home for 2 weeks.

wrong thread. oops.

@momocarly - do liquor stores still have any 150 proof or stronger grain alcohol? Those can be used for disinfecting surfaces. Ditto 70% rubbing alcohol. Just don’t put those in abundance on the skin.

Hugs.

N95 provide protection both from passing the virus and getting it if worn properly and that is why doctors use them. Surgeon’s face masks provide protection from passing the virus. Dr. Anthony Fauci was asked this by a member of congress at that recent testimony of the CDC before congress. He basically said that N95 would protect people but that we do not have enough supply currently. This is unfortunately true. And if we all wore surgeon’s masks, that alone would help people not spread it. We keep hearing it won’t protect ‘you’ (a mask), but what about we all protect each other the way others in other countries are doing. if we had enough masks for doctors and others who have the highest need for them, ideally we would use them much more widely now to stem this outbreak.

@ thumper , I understand that, but was updating your post to reflect the 3/31 date.
I will purchase tickets for my husband to fly to FL in June , round trip $101…and can change until 1/2021 if it is a no go in June. ( understanding Fare might change).

My wonderful D has offered to spend the night with my mom tonight instead of me. (A family member had been sleeping with mom every night since dad was hospitalized in early Feb, plus since he did after 2 weeks in the hospital—not from covid 19.)

She said H and I have been coughing and she feels she’s the healthiest of the 3 of us.

I bought Clorox and Kirkland wipes plus toilet paper for my mom (as well as sone for our household). Also bought mom some extra Depends and pads.

Since there are cases of COVID in our state, they’re doing temp checks of all visitors.
