My BIL works an office job and has requested that he work from home. (He’s a sales manager at a major automative manufacturing place.) He has health issues, a 1 year old at home, and an immune compromised SIL (me) due any day. They have repeatedly denied his request even though he can do literally all of his work at home. My sister is a SAHM so there’s not a risk of him becoming a primary caregiver or anything (taking away work time).
Secret confession time. One of my all time favorite videos is of Sir Mix A Lot performing “Baby Got Back” with the Seattle Symphony. I sing and laugh to the whole thing every. single. time. From the beginning when he talks about how it’s “orchestral movements from the 'hood night” until that awesome lady in the black dress gets up and dances… it’s the best.
Went to Starbucks yesterday that is equidistant to Duke and UNC. It’s normally SRO! Yesterday there was one older guy in the corner, and another older couple on the patio. That’s it!! That was very eye opening.
DH has had a cough (no fever, thankfully!!) so he’s been working from home this week. He normally works from home 2-3 days/week anyway, so he’s well set up. S19’s college has extended Spring Break by a week to give Profs time to prepare for online learning. They will go online for a week, then go back to school. Not holding my breath on this… I think it’ll extend the rest of the 2 months left of the semester.
And as I sat here typing… Little S’s school closed. Not unexpected as UNC and Duke went remote yesterday & the teachers warned the kids they would close if UNC closed.
So, a desk for S19 has been purchased. We will be clearing out the toys Little S no longer wants to make room for his desk to be moved from the office he shares w/ his dad. The new desk will be put either into the office or my library for S19.
My daughters college is going online for the remainder of the semester. I don’t want to sound selfish but I am sad about her missing her last semester of senior year, it’s such a memorable time.
Agreed, @partyof5 !! It’s the kids I feel badly for. Ok, those who are extremely sick too, obviously. But young healthy kids whose lives have been turned upside down. My kids are old enough to understand, but still it just really sucks for them!
I hope the Seniors will have a commencement, it may be pushed further to the summer but they will have one. I am confident that they will.
D19 is handling it very well - she said how I kept telling her about 9/11 happened just a few weeks after she was born . And now this for her first year in college. Something they will remember forever.
Here in CT, the governor has ordered a 90 day extension on getting new drivers licenses. He has told folks renewing registrations for vehicles to do it online. All road tests for new drivers are cancelled for now.
Two more cases diagnosed in Wisconsin today, both in Dane County. Both people had contact with a person whose case was already diagnosed and who had himself or herself traveled outside the state.
The boys’ and girls’ high school basketball tournaments are still on, but the number of tickets (i.e., spectators) has been extremely restricted.
District had us make 2 weeks worth of lessons in both paper (packet) and online form. I am finishing up making them now. We don’t know when we will use them but I think it is likely in the next few weeks if not starting next week.
What do you think is going to happen that will impact the ability to get fresh fruit and vegetables? Is it that people might be forced to stay indoors as people in China had to do, or that once things get bad enough you will not want to go to stores? I would imagine that there will still be food delivery services operating that could deliver vegetables as they have been in China throughout the outbreak. is it that you think farms won’t get planted or harvested? Is it that you think food that can be cooked at higher temperatures might not be safe to eat? Thanks!
I am not sure but I feel better now that I’m back at work after being home a while with the flu. I found being home and reading about the virus and hearing the news was not that great for my own spirits. Getting off the internet and doing other things made me feel a lot better. Being back at work feels good. I don’t know how long we will get to keep working. But my advice is to maybe limit how much time you spend each day reading and thinking about this topic.
There is no evidence to suggest that the ability to get fresh fruit and vegetables will be affected by the virus outbreak. Agriculture and trade will continue.
For some people, stocking up on things (if you want to call that hoarding I guess that is your right to make that judgement) is more important such as people who are immunocompromised. It might feel a lot different to people who can die a lot more easily and many are being told to stay home as much as possible or all the time by their doctors. Hard to do if you don’t have supplies.
I differentiate between stocking up (supplies for two weeks) and hoarding (supplies for a year). I agree that people should be prepared for the possible emergency of having to stay home for two weeks. I have a coworker who’s 8 1/2 months pregnant who couldn’t find some things she needs. I assume that is because some folks are buying hoarding amounts.
Lots of people are afraid. I’m afraid. But I hope people can continue to be considerate of each other by not overbuying.
