No hand sanitizer at the co-op (I’d still like to score some for my pregnant coworker), but that didn’t surprise me. What did surprise me was how many packages I had to look at before finding a sweet treat (cookies or chocolate) appropriate for vegans. I’m bringing something to the office tomorrow for another coworker’s birthday. Usually, I’d bake something, but I know some people might be uncomfortable with home-baked items right now. I did finally find some cookies in a box labeled as okay for vegans. I also went to the library. That will be the hardest thing for me to do without if I have to self-quarantine.
When I was home with the flu I realized that I wished the house were cleaner and that not having the energy to do anything about it made being sick a bit more unpleasant. So, I have been cleaning the house more than usual. I am also doing laundry mid-week more rather than just the weekend.
Public schools in CT are closing…lots of them.
My sister, a teacher, received 10 hours notice that her school would be closed for 2 weeks & the super asked them to have educational materials available to give out. That part didn’t happen. No way could her school handle that. No online learning. The governor has now closed schools through at least April 24.
In my district, food for free/reduced lunch is available at only two locations. How kids will be able to get there when it could be as much as 5 miles away is a mystery.
My MILs AL facility is restricting visitors. My H was able to go in yesterday to take her to a dr appt, but had to be screened before they’d let him go to her apt. They’ve now shut down their dining room, so all meals will be delivered.
We are always stocked up with the basics, so no worries there. We have enough in our freezer to get us through a month, I’d figure.
Just found out that one daughter and her BF were with someone who has been dx with pneumonia. They are hoping that the test doesn’t come back + for CV. They are already working from home, so will self isolate until they get word.
The only thing I wanted was a thermometer, no luck anywhere all week. Went to the grocery store just now and found one in the baby section. It never occurred to me to look there, plus it’s non invasive.
@marrast I am sorry for your loss. This is a hard time to have/plan/not have a funeral.
@WayOutWestMom - you’re in NM right? That hardly seems like a hot spot for panic shopping. My grocery store was fine yesterday, except for TP and I didn’t even look for hand sanitizer. I guess the mad rush is coming.
If you really need food, don’t forget drugstores and gas station convenience stores. Nobody panic shops for food there!
Biscoffs and Oreos are both vegan.
New cases are not accelerating anymore at the moment. Hope it keeps up.

In my county, they will close all schools and libraries starting tomorrow. That must have send people panic shopping. Grocery stores were mobbed. Nothing on the shelf by the time I got around.
I think that new cases aren’t accelerating because there is a lack of testing. Unfortunately there are new cases, they just don’t have the capability of being identified.
You’ve got to test to find cases. I personally know a few people who would like to get tested because they are ill and don’t have the flu and they can’t get tests.
Believe me, there are MANY cases out there right now not being counted. Tens of thousands in the US.
As far as buying food, I’m not suggesting hoarding but I do think many people should have a 2 week supply in the house. We need to social distance whether mandated by our government, local or federal, or not.
Many people - elderly, people with health compromises - really have no choice. Some people are quarantining. Some people are shopping for those groups of people. I wouldn’t assume everyone you with a full cart see is hoarding.
I’ve always thought our government would take care of the populace. Even in good times, though, it is up to each individual or family needs to prepare to take care of themselves for a crisis situation - snow storm, power outage, etc. Resources will be most needed by those who can’t help themselves as well. What has become clear to me over the past few weeks is I can’t rely on my government as much as I thought I could (and I think this will vary from state to state, locale to locale). Even more reason to be prepared.
All Maryland public schools will be closed for two weeks starting Monday.
My son and his GF are consultants near DC, and they are on work from home indefinitely starting tomorrow. I told them quite some time ago they should stock up on food, but didn’t try until today. All pasta gone. They were able to get milk and eggs.
I asked my husband to pick up some milk with an extended shelf life. He got 3 of them. Unfortunately 2 were chocolate, and I don’t see them working well For my morning lattes. Steamed mochas anyone?
I don’t think everyone is hoarding. I assume most people aren’t. But that toilet paper thing… I’m concerned about people who live paycheck to paycheck and can’t under the best of circumstances buy two weeks’ (or more) worth of food and supplies. And we’re not in the best of circumstances; many of those individuals might lose their jobs or their shifts or their tips.
Mr. B reports that our local Home Depot is running low on some electrical crap he needed (why?) but the employees have built GIANT walls in the middle of the stores out of Charmin packages!!
My tennis club is closing for a month!
Yes. You plan what YOU AND YOUR FAMILY NEED for 2 weeks. That varies from family to family. Like I presume you don’t need diapers laying around like we do. In turn, we certainly don’t need food to feed multiple teenagers.
Reminder that Ohio has “5” COVID-19 cases… but the health department says they likely have 100k cases.
Sounds good to me.
I stopped by Target today to get Pine Sol and windex simply because we’re out of them. None. Went to the nearby Walmart and they had 2 containers of windex left. Needless to say, neither store had the myriad of things people have mentioned as hard to find upthread.
Dh did go to the market today to buy a few things in case we need to stay in for 2 weeks. I suggested he buy what he needs for a big pot of chili that would last us days. And eggs…lots of things to do with eggs.
My D and her bf are still in Morocco on an MBA spring break trip. She’s not panicked and will come back (not through Europe) Sunday. BF is scheduled to change planes in Madrid and is very panicked. Spent time today trying to get through to the airline to see if he could fly back early. Haven’t heard the outcome.
And totally agree with the above comments about our country’s reported # of cases. Can’t identify cases if tests are hard to come by…
@collage1, I hope your daughter and her boyfriend make it back to the U.S. without incident. I understand the BF’s panic.
