I just was at Costco, Monday morning shortly after they opened. They have women’s Depends in stock again, so bought a box of that and another box of poise pads for my mom.
They also just got in a pallet of GermX hand sanitizer, 67 ounce size, one per customer so I bought a bottle I’m going to put just inside mom’s front door.
Bought a bag of Cara Cara oranges because we are also out of that, as well as prunes (nearly our). Plus bought a 6 pack of canned salmon because we are out of that as well.
For my board meeting, I bought individually wrapped cookies for folks to be able to snack on during meeting. (They were on coupon $3 off plus I love them.)
They are out of gloves at Costco. Only a very few folks wearing masks.
Last night, I ordered 2 x 12 bottles of 20 oz Purell for the funeral and double-checked with vendor. They’re in transit and price wasn’t outrageous—higher than germ-X but pretty standard for Purell.
@HImom Condolences to you. FYI. A friend who is a funeral home worker said they are considering putting up signs saying not to hug or shake hands with the family but to place hand over heart and nod.
Hmmm, we asked funeral director last night and they said stay tunes and they will give us an update as things continue to evolve. Churches are moving towards no touching at “sign if peace” and who knows what’s next.
Was just in Wawa (convenience store for those unfamiliar) and they had little bottles of hand sanitizer on the counter by the registers. One clerk, a woman who I’d guess was about 60, asked the other, “Why are those out? They’re in the way.” He said, “Because of Coronavirus, I guess.” She replied, “What’s that? Do you mean the flu?” Hard for me to believe she didn’t seem to even recognize the term.
I just did that because of a cold last week. I mean, it just seemed like basic consideration. Can you imagine having to cough while someone’s hands are in your mouth? Ick for everyone.
I’m not doing much except (stupidly!) watching “Pandemic” on Netflix at the moment, but something started to worry me yesterday.
I’d been worried about whether my son would be able to attend a music program he’d been accepted into in Vienna this June. But at the moment that’s taken a back seat to the fact that I just realized that spring break is in two weeks, and my son will be traveling home to NJ from Boston then.
Now I’m kind of wishing that break was starting NOW instead. It just seems that if this thing picks up much traction on the East Coast, two weeks from now (at the rate things are moving) will be a much worse time to be out and about, and traveling, than it would be now. I’d rather have him home than milling about in close quarters with all the students in Boston. He’s young and he’s healthy, and so far I’ve only heard of one case reported in Boston, but I’d still really prefer that he not get sick!
Is that silly?
We bought some bottled water, so I don’t have to fill my water bottle from the public fountain outside my office. We already had hand sanitizer in the car, and in the house I use vinegar at the end of the day on everything. Our stores are empty of sanitizer, toilet paper (???) and canned goods, rice, tuna. Goodness.
I open doors with an elbow, turn knobs with a shirttail. I wash my hands for as long as it takes to sing happy birthday. I wipe off the grocery cart handle. At the end of the work day, I wipe down the breakroom microwave and fridge (just the handles) . All these things are second nature – one of my kids has a permanently damaged immune system. (when he was a kid, I even changed my clothes as soon as I came in from work) He is the person they mean when they say “except for…”. He’s started driving his wife to work, so she can stay off the commuter train (they’re in a major metro area). They are not going out, and doing the grocery runs at less busy times. After the first cases appear, it is past time to do these things.
My parents both currently are recovering from pneumonia, in their 90’s, but they live in the armpit of nowhere. My FiL just ended his chemo. My nephew’s wife is 9 months pregnant, already has 3 kids, and lives in Kirkland Washington. Her hospital may not allow her to come in to deliver, so they may temporarily relocate, can you imagine? She was due 3 days ago.
I haven’t been too worried but my employer keeps sending informational emails and invitations to tutorials to learn how we can work with students and attend and lead meetings from home with some newer software they are hurrying to set up for us.
My mom’s CCRC is having an informational briefing about COVID 19 on Thursday. I guess I will attend so we can try to help her stay as healthy as possible. None of my other sibs have time at 2pm.
I told my wife we should just get a few things like dayquil and ibuprofen, because if it hits our state people will panic and clear out the shelves. And our medicine cabinet was pretty empty so I don’t want to get caught without anything. We have enough food to last a couple months probably so I’m not worried about that.
She thought I was a bit crazy, but called me from the store and said things were already pretty picked over. Lots of empty slots.
She did see hand sanitizer and clorox wipes though, which I didn’t think of but she bought some.
My biggest issue is that I’m a bad face toucher. And nothing makes my eyes itch more than thinking that I shouldn’t touch my eyes!
I was picked for a random pat down at the TSA checkpoint in Denver today. I asked the TSA woman to change her gloves. To my big surprise, she complied! In the past, that would not have happened. I was always told that their gloves were clean enough.
My H is a doctor and got an email from the hospital HR today about travel and quarantine. They want to know if you travel, where you go, and they will have you self quarantine for 14 days if you go to one of the places identified by the CDC as a hot spot. For now, they are only mentioning foreign travel areas as hot spots.
FWIW, we are a 9-10 hour drive from the nearest confirmed coronavirus case, although there are likely many more out there.
Oak trees are just starting to drop pollen and soon I will need chain mail gloves to not rub my eyes! Also, strawberry season is in full swing and there’s nothing that will keep me away from the farmers market. That frozen berry stuff is just soooooo unsatisfying.
I think the only veg product with a long shelf life that I like are canned artichoke hearts. I discovered that my closest grocery store, not the most impressive or large one, completely outdid itself by having EIGHT different varieties on the shelf! I tried them all, but only have 2 left. So far, my favorite was Vigo whole (not quartered), but I haven’t tried the Roland brand yet. Progresso whole was also very good but had a higher sodium content.
So I was doing pretty good with Purell and still counting all the things I touch daily… Anyway doing great then went to dinner with 10 doctors and a rep and we are all shaking hands etc… Agh.
. More Purell etc. Someone said something about fist pumping but that’s just silly to me if your not younger. I usually will do that with my younger patients anyway… Not doing that with my age group. I was off today but tomorrow, No handshakes from me. I feel bad since it’s like the first thing I do with my patients but they will get it.
We are on a cross country road trip so have missed all the stocking up behavior. Have visited 3 national Parks this week and observed less than 3 people in masks. Tomorrow we get to my parent’s house so will observe the SoCal feeling. My mom shops at Costco a lot - last time we were there she had one of those 3packs of Clorox wipes in the garage backing up the tubs under every sink.
One thing I worry about with the nitrile gloves is whether average folks know how to remove them properly. Last year my husband had a central line put in temporarily and I had to learn to care for it. The nurses held classes and you had to demonstrate competence. I failed “gloves” the first two tries.
I was in Target last night and they had displays set up with cleaning items , hand sanitizer, soaps etc at the front of the store. Well stocked. My H said his work is putting some pretty strict travel restrictions in place.
My husband said he was watching a man from the a diamond princess being interviewed. No Coronavirus. However, he was coughing during the interview with his daughter on his lap. He drank some water from a glass, handed it to her and she drank some. It’s like “hello? Are you in there?”
Office depot had Clorox out on tables like right when you walked in and other cleaning supplies. I know they sell this for office but never before saw it that much in your face. But before this might of just walked by and not thought to much of it anyway.
I flew from Texas to Maine yesterday and had a layover in Charlotte. I saw one young woman in the Charlotte airport wearing a face mask (with a creepy clown smile on it, eww). I also saw a young mother of two toddlers thoroughly wiping down every surface in their airplane row. That was it for the day.
