Correcting first-gen info

My surrogate kid is a community college student who will be doing transfer apps soon. When he first enrolled in CC, he did not indicate that he was a first-generation college student, because his mother had always told him that she had a college degree. He has since learned that she was, shall we say, overstating her accomplishments ~X( ; he really should have qualified as a first-gen college student.

He inquired at the CC about whether he could change his first-gen status, as this could be advantageous for transfer admissions and scholarships. They told him that since he has already received aid under the existing FAFSA info, it’s not something they can change.

Does anybody know whether there’s any way for him to change this at the FAFSA level? Or is it irrevocably locked in now that he’s received financial aid based on the incorrect info?

Being a first generation student is really not going to matter in the financial aid process on the FAFSA. Even in the admissions process for first time freshmen, is usually attached to other things like abject poverty and attending low performing schools

The student is transferring from community college. It will not be a tip or a hook. He will be in a much better position to transfer if he is transferring because he has now completed an associates degree vs. transferring because he has completed one semester or one year of college (where most of the weigh in the admissions process will still be based on his high school performance).
