Has anyone taken correspondence courses from a community college, and if you have is it a wise decision to do so?

You can take CLEP tests for most of the lower division requirements at pretty much every college. Correspondence courses can be a beautiful thing if you are highly motivated. I took a distance learning American History class, put everything off the whole semester, then finished the entire course in 3 days. Somehow got a “B.”
If you are a motivated individual, I highly recommend doing this. If you tend to be somewhat lazy, don’t even bother, because you will end up not doing well. Distance learning courses tend to have a 60% or so failure rate because people are motivated enough to learn on their own.
