does anyone know how competitive the UCD Biomedical Sciences course is? ik ppl said it is the most competitive of all the clusters; so if i’m a sophomore, is there a very small chance I’ll get into that?

also, if I’m taking chemistry now, is there no point then in taking “the chemistry of life” at UCD?

I’m trying to choose between UCD and UCSD…

@nicolestarb,
yeah I am pretty much screwed. My ECs suck (no leadership positions, haven’t gotten any awards since 7th grade and I’m a sophomore) and my GPA (i.e. 3.6 UW and 3.8 W) sucks too. I might not even get good recommendations. AND my interest is medical. :(

But I guess I AM OK at creative writing so MAYBE the essays are OK.

@helang425 You’re likely just getting taught the fundamentals of chemistry in your high school class. Cluster 8 goes into a lot of cool stuff that deals with more applied chemistry, such as some topics in Chemical Engineering, so I wouldn’t say it’s pointless…

The UCD Biomed cluster is the MOST competitive out of all clusters at all campuses. However, that shouldn’t discourage you from trying. You never know unless you try and there’s always that chance you’ll get into your 2nd choice cluster as well. (: Plus, current juniors and sophomores get the highest priority so you shouldn’t give up all hope!

So how are you guys going to write your essay? It seems like it must be very very well-written. Again, it’s so difficult to show passion in words =/

^ totally agree with you. for the mini ones for why you chose each cluster, i dont know how to start!

also… for EC’s will it be inappropriate for me to put 2 years of swim? because I got the coach’s award for it last year… or will it be better to put that i merely PARTICIPATED in the business round table competition in the science section?

Was going to apply, but the program is WAYY too expensive for those out-of-state. Good luck to everyone else applying!

Sent from my SGH-T959V using CC

Hey, guys, how’s it going!

I’m applying to either the UCI or UCSD campuses (can’t make my decision)

I’ll be applying to the physics/math/engineering/computer type clusters. Here are my stats…any one know if they are good? Oh, and I’m in 9th grade:

1) Debate Club
- 2nd place first policy tournament
- 9th Place speaking points at a tournament
- made it to finals at a tournament
- Treasurer

2) Community Service
- Helped out a lot over past 5 - 7 years at my mosque
- i.e.: help park 600+ people; coordinate video feed/video tape convention;
setup/set down of event…many hours

3) Math Olympiads in 7th grade
- i think our school came in top 250 middle schools

4) One day spent at a local event for building a Lego Mindstorm Robot
- made it to semifinals
- have wanted to build my own, more legit, robot but haven’t gotten around to it
- worked in group so communication skills
- made me think of a new career

5) Programming experience
- Able to program in C++, Python, GASP library for Python
- Made a calculator…currently adding exponentials and graphing functions
- Made 2 or 3 text adventure games
- doing it ever since 4th or 5th grade
- Want to make graphic games now

SCHOOL STUFF
- 4.6667 GPA
- Baccalaureate program enrolled in
- Student of the month in 7th grade and other school awards

FUTURE GOALS
- probably astrophysicist or related
- maybe computer sci./robotics
- engineering is always an option
- want to go to best schools like Harvard, Princeton, MIT, and Stanford

Sooooo…does this sound reasonable? If my essays and LORs were great do you think I have a chance? Sad part, I don’t have much emphasis on STEM…

@dragonslayerx You seem like a great applicant! The only thing you should be aware of is that on the application, there is only room for you to state five of your activities so you have to carefully choose which ones to mention. You’re not going to be able to mention everything, so you should choose math/science-related ones and other academic activities.

hey sry but can someone please answer my previous question about which EC to put in?

I’m confused on what exactly can be considered “academic”

@lalalove7 I think they just want your first EC to be “academic”. I think you should put in swim team because you won the award and I guess it also shows you’re well rounded.

I’m applying for UCSD as a freshman and I need help on my essays! I don’t know how to start them or what to say…can someone help me??

Applying as a freshman is very difficult…but who knows. Uhm, talk about what events or what youve learned in your life that made you like science. Talk about what impact you want to be in the science field, etc. Yeah stuff like that.

oh… it is? :\ haha idk, why would it be harder for freshman though?

I think it’s harder for a freshman because when assigning the clusters, they give seniors priority, then juniors, sophomores, etc.

Again, this might be a dumb question, but does anyone know if one group of people read my 3 mini essays (the essays that say why you want to apply to each cluster) or do the people send, for example, my biomedical sciences mini essay to like a “biomedical sciences decision committee” and send my other mini essays to other people that choose who go into a specific cluster? because I reference my first essay in both my second and third essay…

Freshmen definitely have a harder time getting in (ESPECIALLY incoming). But jut remember that an amount of them are let in.
And essays are read over by “the cosmos admin” first. And then given to the cluster instructor to read over.

@helang You shouldn’t reference the first essay. They wont read it.

My second teacher just sent in her recommendation! I also finished the online application two days ago and sent off all the supplementary materials yesterday so I’m all done now! :D

Where’d you apply to and what clusters?

I was looking for the adress to ship my application materials to and all i came across was

"COSMOS students enjoy receiving cards and letters from friends and family. Mail is distributed nightly. Send to:

Is this the mailing address that we send all our materials to?
