Cosmos 2012

Okay, would you guys say that a psychology teacher could write a letter of rec? Please let me know as soon as possible!! Thank you!

My math teacher is so busy… I’m worried she’s not going to do my recommendation on time! I’ve talked to her about it every once in a while but… I don’t want to nag her about it and annoy her. :frowning: Any advice?

Does anybody know how many 8th graders were accepted last year? PLEASE give me a number. I know that not many are let in.

@afourally: I applied to UCD–Cluster 8: Chemistry of Life, Cluster 3: Introduction to Engineering Mechanics, and Cluster 5: Computers in Biophysics and Robotics.

@chrisLieto When you finish your online application, a confirmation page gives you the instructions for the rest of your application, i.e. the supporting documents you have to send and where to send them.

@nicolestarb This year they are only allowing math and science teacher recommendations.

@vivng6991 The best way to get what you need to is make polite reminders. If you feel that uncomfortable, ask a different math teacher or a science teacher if it would correspond with the cluster you are applying to.

Hey guys, I’m applying to COSMOS at UC Davis. I have a question-my teacher recs are from my AP Biology and English teacher. I know they require a combination of science/math teachers, but all of my other math/science teachers are either not at my school anymore or they are not writing rec letters unless its for college. Do you think COSMOS will even consider my application when I submit it?

@cosmogony
Will it hurt my overall application if I list a paid job as one of my extracurriculars?

Does anyone know what the California Statewide Student ID (CASSID) really is?
Last year I accidentally put my school ID (slaps forehead)
Where do I find my correct CASSID?

For the Overall weighted GPA (exactly as listed on transcript, do not round up), what do I do if my school does not weight gpa even though my actual weighted gpa is different from the uw gpa indicated on my official transcript? Do I calculate it myself?

When I fill in the “List any academic related activities, science fairs, academic clubs/organizations, etc.” section, are summer long job shadowing experiences and volunteering positions from last summer relevant?

I am not sure if I should include them because the box also requires information on the number of years and hrs/week I devote to that activity, and how do I answer those if my particular EC lasted only one summer instead of continuing on to my current school year?

Thanks in advance

@MomentumA7 - I’m not sure about the CASSID either… I have a short ID number, a longer permanent ID number, and another even longer ID number… not sure which of the longer ones is actually my CASSID. I just didn’t include it, haha

@cali4niastudent I wouldn’t risk it. Maybe try contacting your old math/science teachers? I’m sure they’d be willing to help. Or call the office and ask if they can put a special note in your application.

@MomentumA7 For me, the CASSID is the number at the top of my transcript other than my student ID. It may be somewhere else on your transcript for you because you go to a different school.

@yongqi90301545 ONE eighth grader was accepted last year at UCSD.

@cali4niastudent Contact an old math/science teacher. If you know the first initial of their first name and their last name, I’m pretty sure you can contact them. In my district, all teachers have the same email=@sandi.net with the first initial of their first name and their last name. I’m not sure where you’re from but if your teachers emails are all like that, give it a shot and email a past teacher. I highly doubt they’ll let you do an English teacher.

Actually, contact them using personal emails if you can find them. If they’ve left, you definitely won’t be able to contact them using a district email.

@cosmogony Thanks for the advice, but what I forgot to mention was that my old teachers are full on recommendation letters already. I would have asked them already if they weren’t. Anyways, I emailed COSMOS directly and asked them about it. They just replied and asked me, “What school are you from?” I replied but they haven’t responded yet. Do you think this means I might have a chance? Thanks!

@cali4niastudent The COSMOS staff are very understanding and are definitely going to provide you an opportunity if there are no alternate options available. Just work out the issue with them and you should be fine.

@MomentumA7 NEVER calculate your GPA by yourself. The COSMOS people at the Open House made it completely clear that you are to just put down your UW GPA in the weighted section if your school doesn’t calculate it.

@cosmogony Thank you. COSMOS hasn’t replied again yet though and it’s a Saturday now. Do you know if they still respond to emails on weekends? The deadline is approaching and I need to know whether or not I should stay with my current teachers or try again to find another math/science teacher.

Shoot, I just turned in my application right before finding this thread. For the academic list, I put solely academic things, and I only had 4 or so academic extra-curriculars. I have so much others, and I thought it was solely academic stuff. I’m so disappointed lmao

@treating to where are you applying to?
