Cosmos 2012

I applied to UCSC, with my first cluster being the logic and math one and my second cluster being environmental toxicology. I’m also going to be a rising senior next summer, so…this is sorta important.

@californi4student I have no idea if they reply to emails during the weekend, but I’m sure they will work something out for you and put a note on your application if you truly cannot find a teacher.

Hi, I’m a current sophomore and I know this question is over-asked, but I’m kind of curious. I applied for UCD Chemistry of Life because I really liked Chemistry this year, and I want to work on medicine or renewable sources of energy in the future and that was under the course description. However, a lot of my friends told me UCD was impossible to get into.

I have okay stats I think (not amazing):

Unweighted GPA 4.0 (Chemistry H and Pre-Calculus H)
My school doesn’t weight GPA
600 on Bio and Algebra two Star test
Planning on participating in Sypnosis Science fair this year
Chevron energy conference on renewable resources and won an internship
President and founder of Environmental Science Club at school
FBLA, Interact, Spanish Honor Society (Didn’t mention)
Varsity Badminton
JV Tennis Captain

I think I lack academic extra-curriculars, but do I have a chance of getting into cluster 8? I Really want to.

@dartmoorpony666
“I applied for UCD Chemistry of Life”
So you sent out the application already?

how is cluster 9 (mathematical modeling in biological systems) for ucd? i haven’t hear much about it, but i’m really interested

Hi, can anyone look at my stats and tell me if I have any chance to get into the Biomedical cluster at UCD?
Weighted GPA: 4.02
I am VP of Finance for Junior Achievement, volunteer at Good Sam Hospital, in Medical Explorers, in CSF(teacher’s assistant), and Service Club. I’m really nervous because I really want to get in and I heard it could be really difficult. Any responses are really appreciated

@MomentumA7
yup I did. Do you know if it is competitive or not?

Hii. I’m a freshman and I’m applying for UCI clusters 1,2, &4.
Do I have a chance of getting in?
Weighted GPA: 4.42 (Apparently language & team brings it down :T)
In Interact Club & Robotics Team.
I don’t really have any EC’s directly related to STEM, but I do volunteering and other things… should I include those?

And I am completely lost in both the essays and recommendations… Do you think it’s too much if I only give the teachers 10 days to write the letters? I gave it to them before but apparently they forgot…

Please leave a comment! Thank you (:

@dartmoorpony666 So YOU’RE my competition. /death glare
I’m applying to Cluster 8 too! But I was just kidding. XD I hope we both get in!
UCD is only “impossible to get into” if you’re applying to Biotechnology or Biomedical Sciences. Our cluster is only moderately competitive and I think we both stand a good chance! (Our applications look like twins lol My two weighted classes at the moment are Pre-Cal H and Chemistry H and I also have a 4.0 UW and am a sophomore. The only thing is I have more academic EC’s and you have WAY better STAR test scores haha)

@raandomness Mathematical Modeling in Biological Systems is a new cluster this year. Considering it’s biological and it’s at UCD, I’m assuming it’s amazing and they seemed really hyped up about it when I went to the Open House. You should definitely go for it if you’re interested!

I’m nervous. Are the “brand new” clusters usually insanely popular the first year? If so, I am completely ruined.

I have a pretty urgent question: when it says that the deadline is March 1, does it mean postmarked or actually received in their office that day?
please reply
thank you

@MomentumA7 - I believe it’s postmarked by March 1

Hey, does anyone have statistics about how many people applied to each cluster previous years? Thanks :D

@cosmogony haha :smiley: I hope we both get in!!! what did you apply to as your second and third choice?

For the essays, you guys think it’ll be okay if I focus on science? cause the prompt does say “math/science” so I’m guessing its either or…or both…idk I already wrote the first draft of my essay on science mainly…

I’m a sophomore applying for the UCD biomed cluster,
Do I have a chance?
4.0 UW and 4.5 W
I have above average STAR scores but they aren’t really that great.
In Science Club and officer in Health & Med Club
Was in Sci Oly in jr high (my HS doesn’t have a team)
I tutor kids in math after school and i’m a coach for a Sci Oly event
In Jr High I was in a ton of science fairs and I placed in my school and advanced to a Regional Science Fair

I have other ECs but they are not science/academic related (art, sports, writing, volunteering, etc) so I can’t put them in
Do you think it would be acceptable to put in things i did in Jr High?

Also, everything that we mail in – does that also have to reach there by March 1?

Please reply!! (:
I would really appreciate any help I could get right now

Do you send checks? Or cash.

HONESTLY GUYS, don’t send us stats and ask if you have a chance. Your chance comes from your essays. The codirector at ucsd said people with below a 3.5 got in with some good essays. So, regardless if you have a 4.5, president of whatever, if your essays suck, you have no chance.

@afourally lol It’s illegal to send cash through mail, so check. :stuck_out_tongue:
@MomentumA7 Documents definitely only have to be postmarked by March 1, and no worries, people don’t normally flock towards the new cluster. It normally gradually gains popularity throughout the years and is often a second/third choice cluster for most.
@dartmoorpony666 My second and third choices were Cluster 3: Introduction to Engineering Mechanics and Cluster 5: Computers in Biophysics and Robotics, respectively. (I wish to pursue a major in Chemical Engineering.) What were your choices?
@Chiangsta Definitely. For my essay, I focused on an experience that changed my perspective on the subject of chemistry.

Well that makes sense. Thanks cosmogony! Did you guys already submit your app?
