Hi - I’m thinking of applying to COSMOS. Can you apply with picking one cluster? I am only interested in one of the clusters at the moment.
@gingerpat You mean picking only one cluster with no 2nd choice? Yes, you can do that. I know someone who did that and was admitted off the waitlist a few years ago.
Quick quotation what did u put in your statement of interest I’m struggling in the one area. I tried looking for student SOI that got in and studying what they did but no one posted their SOI. (Im trying to get into the cluster 10 in UCI)
My son was accepted several years ago and I went back and read his successful SOI. I’ll just post a few things he touched on. What excites you about cosmos and this cluster and being in a setting like this? Are there specific examples from your life (not necessarily from school) that highlight your ongoing curiosity about science? It doesn’t have to be related just to this cluster topic. Be authentic above all. Remember the professors who teach the clusters are the ones who read the applications. HTH
Application submitted last night. 7 weeks of waiting time … I wish it is shorter.
My D26 is also in waiting now. She applied to UCSC. Which campus did you apply to?
UCSD. I am a junior. This summer will be my last chance.
That might work in your favor.
Am I correct, that this is the first year with an expanded COSMOS at UCLA, the 5th campus to participate?
Yes this is UCLA’s first year joining COSMOS.
That’s exciting that they’ll be able to admit about 150 more applicants, and likely more in the future as they add more clusters to that campus.
Hopefully it means they took notice of the applicants coming out of COSMOS and decided to join the club! Good social proof of the program for outside schools that may not be as familiar with it.
All the UCs are very aware of COSMOS. The UC application has a box to check in “ academic preparation programs” specifically for COSMOS participants.
Yes I was referring to schools outside of California.
hi guys, i’m a sophomore applying to cosmos and want to know my realistic chances of getting in to prepare myself. i go to school in the silicon valley so literally everyone from my hs is applying and im scared my application pales in comparison to theirs.
here are my application highlights:
stats:
UW gpa: 3.9
(i got a B in AP CS A and a B in Pre-Calc honors, but neither are a pre-requisite for the clusters i applied to, although AP CS A was “recommended” for my first-choice cluster)
personal statement: i connected my journey with ballet to computer science, and i think my personal statement was honestly pretty solid
why this cluster essays: for my first-choice cluster, which was an AI cluster, i talked about how I want to create an app that helps women with PCOS (a marginalized disorder seen in mainly black and brown communities) and to make it impactful, i need AI to do it
ultimately, i know cosmos cares A LOT abt gpa. i heard stuff about the avg UW gpa being anything from a 3.8 to a 3.91 and i’m really scared that my gpa is what’s gonna get me rejected. for reference, i applied to UCLA cluster 6 as my first choice and cluster 1 as my second choice, but i heard that your second choice doesn’t really matter bc you usually get accepted into your first choice or not at all.
Activities:
- I am a section editor for the STEM Newspaper at my school, so i talked about that
- I am the VP of curriculum for the Future Problem Solving Program International club, where I helped people prepare for the competition by creating lesson plans and coaching them (btw, this is a competition where members basically solve global issues with technology)
i just wanna know if i even have a chance of getting in w my gpa (especially considering the classes i messed up were STEM classes, which cosmos puts an emphasis on)
that being said, i do know people who got in with like a B in math, but i also have a B in cs, and i just wanna be realistic here, so i would appreciate it if anyone could give me an objective pov of what they think about my chances (esp if they’re a cosmos alumni or know a lot about the application process)
thank you and good luck to everyone!

Can you please share your stats, if you don’t mind ?
