COSMOS vs. UCLA HS-SEAS summer tech camp

My S has been admitted to UCLA HS-SEAS summer tech camp and John Hopkins Engineering innovations. But is waitlisted for COSMOS UCSD Cluster 1. His interest is engineering. Should we wait for COSMOS or just go ahead with UCLA HS-SEAS summer tech camp? Risk of waiting is to lose both.

Can you confirm for the UCLA program, pay a small deposit, and then cancel if you get into COSMOS? Both the UCLA program and the Johns Hopkins program are expensive for commuter programs.

Also, just a note: for COSMOS, when you’re on the waitlist, you’re on the waitlist for both of the clusters you applied to. If he was more passionate in his application for his second-choice cluster, he might get into that one (it happened to my friend).

Don’t think we can delay anymore. The original deadlines were April 29 and May 4 for the two programs. They are expensive for residential programs. We may be able to drag it out a few days

For COSMOS, you won’t get a response until mid-May.

Does your son really want to do both programs? They are expensive, after all. If your son is a junior, I’d say to go with it. If he’s not, I wouldn’t–he’ll always have time next summer.

Also, your son can try emailing local professors and asking them if he can work in their labs over the summer. Many are still responsive.
