The information in my daughter’s acceptance package includes tutition, room, and board estimates for next year and values for books, transportation, and personal expenses. However, these figures seem low compared to most of the estimates from her other schools. Books at $600 a year, personal expenses at $800. How feasible are these numbers? We are on the cusp of making the numbers work and she can attend, or these numbers could truly be a deal breaker.

Lucky you getting any help at all! We just got notice of tuition, etc. increase. As far as those numbers go, I would say the book estimate sounds about right. Also, the spending estimate may vary depending on transportation costs, etc. If your daughter has the meal plan she could make it on that amount, but she would have to be inventive and thrifty. I think she would be fine and based on the economy, I think a lot of kids will be spending a lot less next year.

…for his first two years at SLC my S spent just about $400 each year [he also sells back books he does not want to keep]. Only taking 3 courses a semester keeps book costs lower in some course areas.

$400 per year for books; my S had to cover all of his own personal expenses and I don’t have good numbers. I knew he spent more in 2nd year than in first year because he spent a lot more time of campus…

To go into New York City, both ways is $12. Subway: $4 if you ride it just twice. That’s $16 just for the transport. If you stay on campus, personal costs go really down.
