Here in the Far North MidWest, store brand butter has gone from about $2.90 per pound in early September to $4.25 per pound in late October. Is there some critical bit of dairy industry news that I’ve missed? I don’t remember it being nearly this expensive a year ago.
In my So Cal/LA neighborhood a 1 lb. box of butter goes for $3.19 at Trader Joe’s, up from $2.99 and that was an increase from $2.79 a few months prior. I believe it’s .50 to .75 cents per pound more expensive at the local grocery store chains. I’d be interested too, in any explanation. Between the increase in butter and egg prices, holiday baking will be more expensive this year…
I will have to look at Costco and Sams Club. I buy the 4 box, and freeze the extras. For some reason, about $8 for 4 sticks in my head.
$8 for four STICK of butter? That can’t be right. Most of us think of a stick as 1/4 of a pound. How much is in each “stick” @mom2collegekids
Costco sells butter in a four pound package. I just paid $9.50 for four pounds of butter at Costco.
In HI, on sale, I think I paid about $3 or $4 for a pound of butter at the local supermarket. We’re higher than most of the US for nearly all groceries.
If you have Aldi, they are a good low cost provider of butter and eggs. Both have risen lately, the eggs of course due to the problems and costs with production. Noticed some rise in our area, but bigger rise in regular grocery stores.
@thumper1 lol…no…4 boxes. Each box has 4 sticks. I didn’t write that right.
It takes us a LONG time to use up 4 pounds of butter–heck it takes us quite a while to use up a whole pound of butter. For a while, we had 8 pounds of butter because we bought more when we didn’t think we had any but we already did in the freezer. I do freeze the butter we’re not using, but still prefer to buy smaller quantities.
We buy two pounds of butter at a time…mostly for baking. We get it at Aldi. But I don’t know the orice because I haven’t bought any recently.
Butter: $2.99 for store brand, $3.89 for Land o Lakes
Eggs: $2.89 for a dozen large store brand, $3.69 for regional cage free brand
Aldi 1 dozen Grade A large eggs $2.19; Countryside 4 stick/1 lb butter (grade AA) $3.39.
I have seen either at Wal Mart or Kroger an ‘off’ label of grade AA butter for about half of what they want for the other butter.
Gal of skim milk at Aldi $1.89. About $1 less than Wal Mart.
$5/lb for Darigold or Tillamook when not on sale. I bought some for $3.50 a week ago
Less than the cost of butter in my diet!
It has gone up and has gone up at Costco. I just bought the 4 pound package yesterday (4, 1 lb packages) - I believe I paid $10.99 - so less than $3/pound.
The last price I recall seeing for a pound of Land O’ Lakes was $3.79. A month or so ago, one of the local grocery stores ran a 2 pounds for $5 special. They typically do this at Christmas as well. Last Christmas we purchased a year’s worth at that price, and placed it in the freezer. We plan to do the same again this year.
I almost started a thread on this a few weeks ago! Butter in my area used to be $2.50/lb and when I needed more recently was shocked that it was $4.50. I don’t remember hearing any reason for a sharp increase on the news.
I just noticed the increase at my market too! Used to be able to get it for $2.50 or $3 on sale and now it’s closer to $5 and $4.50 looks like a deal…I remember a few summers ago when Safeway had a deal for what seemed like months where their store brand was $1.50.
Re: Costco. Do they sell butter in the ‘regular’ size sticks? I’ve purchased butter there twice, clearly not paying enough attention, and one time there were 4 sticks to a package but there were very long and didn’t fit in my dish and the other time the box contained one huge cube! I’d be very happy to buy my butter at Costco if I could figure out which one will give me the regular sized sticks.
The butter I buy at Costco is 1 pound packages of 4 regular sticks - 4 pounds all together. So yeah, normal butter sticks.
I did read that butter is more in demand for two reasons: one, the realization among home cooks and restaurant cooks (even McDonalds!) that butter is better than margarine. And two, in the fall baking increases - therefore people buy much more of it.
I just looked and it certainly has gone up. I wonder why. Used to be at most $3.00 a pound and now for LandoL it is over $5 a pound and store brand is “on special” at $3 for a pound.
