Cost of Film Major

I know it varies from college to college, but how much does it cost to double-major in Film and something else? I want to do a practical major (Econ) on the side, but I’m head-over-heels sure that I want to make movies. On average, how much does it cost to add another major?

Cost is a factor of counting the number of semesters needed to meet your major requirements. Every semester you have to add is a major cost impact.

It depends on which university, which specific double major, and whether you’ve got any transferrable credits from high school AP or IB courses. Keep in mind some double majors are significantly easier than others because the major requires less credit hours. If you want a BFA in Film then a double major will be impossible to pull off. BFA takes too much time to double. You can double with a BA or BS in Film.

My son is just getting started doing this: Film and Business. In his case we came to the conclusion with the help of college counselors that it would most likely take 4 1/2 years. So he’s taking community college courses this past summer and next summer to get some of the university requirements out of the way. In a later year summer he might do a summer abroad program to rack up more credits. He also has some transferrable credits from high school. Doing it this way and carrying a full load for four years he’ll be able to graduate on time.

If you go on most any university tour and ask the question of whether you can double major and graduate in four years, our experience was that they always said an emphatic yes. What they won’t tell you is how hard you have to work to do it in four years, even if you ask. If you study the major requirements online for most any university you can get a sense of whether four years is doable or not, though it can be a lot of fuss to figure it out.
